Overview

The WB550 Apex by ATEL is a 5G Indoor Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Router designed to provide high-speed internet connectivity within an indoor environment. This device acts as a central hub for both wired and wireless clients, leveraging 5G and 4G networks to deliver internet access. Its primary function is to receive cellular signals and convert them into a local Wi-Fi network and Ethernet connections for various devices.

Function Description

The WB550 router facilitates internet access by utilizing a 4FF (Nano) SIM card to connect to 5G and 4G cellular networks. Once connected, it broadcasts a Wi-Fi signal, allowing wireless devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops to access the internet. Simultaneously, it provides Ethernet ports for wired connections, ensuring stable and high-speed access for devices like desktop computers, smart TVs, or gaming consoles. The device is equipped with LED indicators that provide real-time status updates on signal strength, network connectivity (5G/4G), LAN activity, Wi-Fi status, and power.

Usage Features

  • Network Connectivity: The router supports both 5G and 4G networks, automatically connecting to the best available signal. Its LED indicators clearly display the current network type (5G or 4G) and signal quality (Good, Normal, Weak, or Error), enabling users to assess their connection strength at a glance.
  • Wired and Wireless Access: For wireless clients, the WB550 creates a Wi-Fi network. Users can connect by scanning the Wi-Fi SSID (found on the device label) and entering the password key. For wired connections, the device includes LAN ports, allowing direct Ethernet cable connections to client devices. It also features a WAN/LAN2 port, which can be configured for either a second LAN connection or as a WAN input for connecting to an external internet source, providing flexibility in network setup.
  • SIM Card Management: The device uses a spring-loaded 4FF (Nano) SIM slot for easy insertion and removal of the U-SIM card. To install, the SIM card is inserted as directed by an image. To remove, the edge of the SIM is pressed inward, causing it to pop out.
  • WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup): A dedicated WPS button allows for quick and secure connection of wireless devices without the need to manually enter the Wi-Fi password. This feature is activated by pressing the button for 5 seconds.
  • Power Management: The router is powered via a DC port, connecting to a 12V power adapter. A power LED indicates whether the device is receiving power, turning on when power is supplied.
  • WebGUI Online Device Management Portal: The WB550 offers a comprehensive web-based graphical user interface (WebGUI) for device management. Users can access this portal by entering http://192.168.0.1 in a web browser while connected to the router via Wi-Fi or LAN. The login credentials (username "admin" and password) are found on the device label. Through the WebGUI, users can:
    • View device information and network status, including signal quality (RSRP, RSRQ, SINR), network name, and IP addresses.
    • Change device settings, such as Wi-Fi SSID and password (under SETTINGS > Wi-Fi Settings).
    • Perform manual software upgrades.
    • Monitor data traffic (received and sent).
  • Device Label: The physical device label provides essential information, including the model name, IMEI, Wi-Fi details (SSID and password), and login credentials for the WebGUI.

Maintenance Features

  • LED Indicators for Troubleshooting: The array of LED indicators serves as a primary diagnostic tool. For example, a blinking red signal LED indicates a missing or undetected SIM card, while a red signal LED suggests weak signal strength. Different colors for 5G/4G, LAN, and Wi-Fi LEDs quickly show connection status, helping users identify and resolve basic connectivity issues.
  • Factory Reset Options: The WB550 can be reset to its factory default settings in two ways:
    • Reset Button: A physical RST/Reset button, accessible via a pin, allows for a hardware reset. By pushing and holding this button for 2-4 seconds while the device is powered on, the router will reboot. Holding it for 5 or more seconds will initiate a full factory reset.
    • WebGUI Portal: Within the WebGUI, users can navigate to "Settings > Basic: Management > Factory Reset" and click the "Restore" button to perform a software-based factory reset.
    • Important Note for Reset: When performing any reset or restart, it is crucial to ensure the power adapter is connected to maintain an uninterrupted power supply.
  • Troubleshooting FAQ: The manual includes a FAQ section to address common issues such as the power LED not being on, inability to access the WebGUI, or the router failing to access the network. This section provides step-by-step guidance, including checking power connections, verifying client connectivity, trying different web browsers, and confirming USIM card validity and network parameters (RSRP, SINR).
  • Remote Management Platform (ATRACS): For more advanced management and support, ATEL's remote management platform, ATRACS, is available for the WB550. This platform offers additional capabilities for monitoring and managing the device, with details provided in a separate ATRACS User Manual.
  • Support Resources: Users can find further information, including the full User Manual, Regulatory Statements, and Warranty Policy, on the ATEL-USA website (www.atel-usa.com). Contact information for support is also provided.
