First aid in the event of a refrigerant leak (an extract from CSN EN 378–3):
Eye exposure:
- Never rub the eyes.
- Remove the contact lenses (if any).
- Keep the lids lifted and flush the eyes with a large amount of water for at least 20 minutes.
- Transport the victim immediately to a specialised doctor’s or hospital.
Skin exposure:
- Wash the affected areas of skin with a large amount of water for at least 20 minutes and remove the clothes while the
water is still running.
- Never cover the affected areas of skin using clothes, dressings or oil etc.
- As soon as possible after the washing transport the victim immediately to a doctor’s or hospital.
When a refrigerant is swallowed:
- If the victim is conscious, make them drink as much water or warm tea as possible.
- As soon as possible after the washing transport the victim immediately to a doctor’s or emergency hospital.
If the victim is unconscious:
- Immediately call a doctor and rescue services equipped with a respirator.
- Whilst waiting for their arrival, move the victim to a ventilated room or out of the building if safe. The victim should be
turned onto the side.
- Inform the doctor as to what kind of refrigerant the victim was exposed to, preferably by a label attached to the victim.
- Loosen the clothes covering the chest and neck area to facilitate breathing.
- If necessary, use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
- Make sure persons who have inhaled a large amount of a gaseous refrigerant are treated as soon as possible by a

- Never administer water or any other liquid through the mouth unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
