Axis’ZipstreamTechnologyisabitratereductiontechnologyoptimizedforvideosurveillance.Zipstreamreducestheaveragebitrate
intheH.264streambyremovingunnecessarydataandmakesitpossibletoallowhigherresolutions,reducestoragecostor
tokeeprecordingsforalongertime.
Toreducethebitrate,Zipstreamreducesthenumberofbitsintheareasoftheimagethatarelessinterestingfromavideo
surveillanceperspective,forexamplethebackground.Imagedetailsthatareimportantforforensicvideoanalysis,forexamplefaces
andlicenseplates,arepreservedwithenoughnumberofbits.
Axis’ZipstreamTechnologyforH.264conformstotheH.264standardandiscompatiblewiththird-partyclientsandVMSsolutions
thatdecodeH.264video.
Recommendeduseofbitratereduction
Zipstreamoffersanumberofbitratereductionpresets,fromLowtoExtreme.Lowbitratereductionisenabledbydefaultandis
safetouseinallapplicationswhilestillreducingthebitrate.
Forcloud-connectedcamerasorcamerasusingedgestoragethatneedtolimitthebitrateforincreasedstoragetimeitis
recommendedtoselecttheExtremebitratereduction.Thissettingissuitabletocombinewithmotiondetectiontriggeringand
variablebitrate(VBR)wherethebitrateisallowedtoadapttochangesincomplexityinthescene.
HowtosavebandwidthandstorageusingZipstream
ThebitratecontrollerbuiltintotheproductcanbecombinedwithZipstreamtoensureamaximumbitrate(MBR)limit.We
recommendusingVBRorMBRwithahighbitratelimittoenablethefullpotentialofZipstream.Forinstanceinrailwaysurveillance
whereattimesthereisalotofmovementinthesceneandwhereitisimportanttocapturedetails,suchasfacialfeatures,theMBR
shouldbesetto10Mbit/s(for1080presolutionat30fps).
