Do you have a question about the Axon Synapse ASV12 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Synapse ASV12 is a high-end 12-bit analog composite to serial digital converter, designed for broadcast industry applications. This modular system emphasizes high density, intuitive operation, and high-quality processing. The ASV12 converts analog composite signals to Serial Digital Interface (SDI) and includes a Frame Synchronizer, video proc-amp, VI inserter, and an adaptive 5-Line Comb Filter for signal enhancement. It is capable of working with most common television standards, including PAL and NTSC.

Function Description:

The core function of the ASV12 is to convert analog composite video signals into a 12-bit serial digital format. It employs 12-bit digital decoding to ensure accurate and high-quality signal processing. A key feature is its 5-line adaptive comb filter, which produces a clean, noise-free image with minimal artifacts.

The ASV12 has one analog composite input, capable of accepting a range of video standards. It provides four SDI outputs with embedded audio, which can reduce the need for external distribution amplifiers and embedders.

For automatic standard selection, the ASV12 can detect the input standard and adjust its signal processing accordingly. In 'Auto' mode, it automatically identifies whether the input is a 625 or 525 signal and adapts its operation.

Audio embedding is a significant feature; when used with optional ADD-On cards, the ASV12 can embed up to eight audio channels into the output SDI stream. This is controlled through the Emb-Mode setting, which allows for Off, Append, or Overwrite modes. Append adds additional audio channels, while Overwrite replaces existing audio groups with the processed group. The Emb-A-Sel and Emb-B-Sel settings determine which of the four available audio groups on the Synapse bus are embedded by embedders A and B, respectively. Further granular control is provided by Emb-A1/2, Emb-A3/4, Emb-B1/2, and Emb-B3/4, which specify which audio channels (1 and 2, or 3 and 4) are embedded by each embedder from various AddOn sources.

A built-in framestore allows the ASV12 to handle poor quality input signals and correct timing errors, ensuring a stable output.

Two reference inputs are provided via the Synapse Bus, offering redundancy or allowing operation with different TV standards. The Ref-Input setting allows the user to select which reference input (1, 2, or Auto) is used to lock the ASV12. In Auto mode, it selects Ref_1 for 625 signals and Ref_2 for 525 signals, automatically locking to an available reference.

The Mode setting offers Synchronize and Delay options. In Synchronize mode, the Autophaser/Line synchronizer is active, and the card locks to a reference, taking H-V-delay into account. In Delay mode, no reference is required, and the output timing is derived from the input, with H-Delay and V-Delay settings providing additional delay.

External Freeze functionality allows the ASV12 to freeze the output signal manually by switching to a freeze input. The Ext-Frz setting enables or disables this feature, which is triggered by a GPI contact closure on the BPL01 backplane. The Frz-Mode setting determines whether a complete video frame or field is stored for freezing. Panic-Frz enables the capture of the last video information when the input signal is lost, always using Field mode.

A tracking output provides a timing pulse for use with other Axon Synapse devices, such as for audio synchronization with a DIO24.

Maintenance Features:

  • Warranty: Axon warrants products according to their general terms, provided serial numbers are not removed.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always disconnect from AC mains before cleaning.
    • Product frame must be terminated with a three-conductor AC mains power cord with earth ground connection.
    • Never use flammable or combustible chemicals for cleaning.
    • Never operate with covers removed.
    • Never wet the inside or spill liquids onto the unit.
    • Never block airflow through ventilation slots.
    • Never bypass or replace fuses with incorrect values/types.
    • Do not attempt repairs; contact an Axon distributor.
    • Avoid extreme temperatures and explosive atmospheres.
  • LED Indication:
    • Error LED: Indicates internal logic configuration errors or hardware failures.
    • Input LED: Indicates the presence of a valid video signal at the input.
    • Reference LED: Indicates the presence of a valid reference signal on the selected reference input connector.
    • Connection LED: Illuminates for 0.5 seconds every time a connection is made to the card after initialization.
  • Event Reporting: The ASV12 generates asynchronous event messages (e.g., "INP_LOSS," "REF_LOSS," "INP_RETURN") to inform the environment about changing conditions. These events have predefined tags (e.g., 01hex for input loss, 02hex for reference loss) and user-definable priorities (1-255, 0 for disabled). Higher priority alarms can trigger the error LED on the Synapse rack front panel.
  • Default Settings: On power-up, the card uses basic data and default initialization settings. Most settings can be reset to their default values via the front panel control by pressing the appropriate cursor button twice while editing.
  • Unpacking and Placement: Cards must be unpacked in an anti-static environment, handled by the edges, and stored/shipped in anti-static packaging to prevent premature failure. Correct insertion into SFR18 (vertical) or SFR04 (horizontal) frames is crucial for proper function. All LEDs light up briefly during power-up initialization.
