INSTRUCTIONS
BREAK-IN PERIOD
Like any fine piece of machinery, your precision-engineered
SMOKE UNIT
(Your locomotive’s outer box and/or label will indicate
if it is equipped with smoke).
Your locomotive MAY be equipped with a smoke-generating
feature. To operate your locomotive’s smoke feature, put 3 or 4
drops of smoke (Item No. 00251) down the smokestack. PLEASE
DO NOT add smoke to a locomotive that is not equipped with a
smoke-generating feature as this can damage the locomotive.
Bachmann train will work best after a few hours of actual running
time. Do not run consistently at full speed. Frequent starts and
stops and running at various speeds will ensure many years of
trouble-free operation.
TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
1. If your locomotive doesn’t run, check the following:
• Check that the power pack is plugged in.
• Check that the track is wired and assembled properly.
• Make sure all locomotive wheels are on the track.
2. For some styles of power packs, if your locomotive doesn’t
run but the headlight (if equipped) glows, you may not have
your track connected to the DC terminals on the power pack.
Be sure to make your track connections according to the power
pack manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Keep your track and the metal wheels of the locomotive clean
with a track cleaner. Bachmann’s Rail & Road Track Cleaner
(Item No. 99992) is recommended. Dirt will cause your
locomotive to run erratically. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL TO
CLEAN YOUR TRACK! Bachmann’s line of HO scale
track-cleaning rolling stock is also recommended to dry-clean
your track. Visit your local hobby retailer for more information.
LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE
For the best care and maintenance of your motive power, rolling stock, and track, we recommend lubricating metal-to-metal and other
moving parts after every 24 hours of use. Do not lubricate motors or electrical pick-ups with oil. Bachmann offers a full line of
premium-grade E-Z Lube
®
lubricants, including Light Gear Oil, Heavy-Duty Grease, Heavy Gear Oil, and Conductive Contact Lubricant.
Each of the lubricants has a specific purpose. We recommend Bachmann’s Light Gear Oil (Item No. 99984) for use on all gears,
bearings, valve gears, and side rods. Our Heavy Gear Oil (Item No. 99983) lubricates for extended periods of time and should be used
for larger locomotive gears only. For applications requiring heavier viscosity products, such as Large Scale trains, it is best to use
Heavy-Duty Grease (Item No. 99982). And for superior electrical pickup, contact maintenance, and track cleaning, your choice is
Conductive Contact Lube (Item No. 99981). Your local hobby retailer can also recommend other appropriate lubricants.
Proper lubrication is important but MUST NOT BE OVERDONE. Apply oil by dipping the end of a toothpick into the oil and applying just
one drop where needed. Wipe off excessive oil. Too much lubrication can cause slipping drive wheels or even a short circuit.
Lubricate carefully. Be sure your lubricant is compatible with plastic. Check for any dirt or lint between the brush and armature and
also between the pick-up strip and wheels, which can cause a “jerky” operation.
With proper maintenance, you can extend the life and enjoyment of your railroad equipment for many, many years. We urge you to
establish a sensible maintenance schedule and to use our E-Z Lube
®
products for professional care.

Do you have a question about the Bachmann Daisy and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document serves as a comprehensive manual for a Bachmann HO scale train, specifically the 58820 HO TTT DAISY model. It provides instructions for operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, along with a detailed exploded view diagram for spare parts identification.

Function Description

The Bachmann HO TTT DAISY is a precision-engineered model train designed for hobbyists. It operates on HO scale track and is intended to provide a realistic model railroading experience. The train may be equipped with a smoke-generating feature, adding to its realism. The manual emphasizes that the train performs best after a break-in period, suggesting that it is a mechanical device that requires initial use to achieve optimal functionality.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual does not explicitly list detailed technical specifications such as motor type, voltage requirements, or material composition in a dedicated section. However, it implicitly refers to several components and their functions:

  • Scale: HO Scale.
  • Model Number: 58820 HO TTT DAISY.
  • Smoke Unit: Optional, requires Bachmann Smoke Fluid (Item No. 00251). The manual warns against adding smoke fluid to locomotives not equipped with a smoke unit, indicating a specific design for this feature.
  • Lubricants: Bachmann's E-Z Lube® lubricants are recommended, including Light Gear Oil (Item No. 99984), Heavy-Duty Grease (Item No. 99982), Heavy Gear Oil (Item No. 99983), and Conductive Contact Lube (Item No. 99981). These specifications highlight the types of lubrication required for different components, implying various material interactions and mechanical loads within the train.
  • Track Cleaner: Bachmann's Rail & Road Track Cleaner (Item No. 99992) is recommended for track and metal wheel cleaning. The warning against using steel wool suggests that the track and wheel materials are susceptible to damage from abrasive materials.
  • Power Pack: The train operates on DC power, as indicated by troubleshooting tips related to DC terminals on the power pack.

Usage Features

  • Break-in Period: The train requires a break-in period for optimal performance. This involves several hours of actual running time, with frequent starts and stops and varying speeds. This feature suggests that the mechanical components, such as gears and bearings, need to wear in to achieve smooth operation.
  • Smoke Unit Operation (Optional): If equipped, the smoke unit requires 3-4 drops of Bachmann Smoke Fluid (Item No. 00251) in the smokestack. This is a user-activated feature that enhances the visual realism of the model.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues like the locomotive not running, the headlight glowing but the train not moving, and erratic operation. These tips guide the user through checking power connections, track assembly, wheel contact, and cleanliness.
  • Track Cleaning: Regular cleaning of the track and locomotive metal wheels is crucial for preventing erratic operation. Bachmann's track cleaner and HO scale track-cleaning rolling stock are recommended.

Maintenance Features

  • Lubrication: Regular lubrication of metal-to-metal and other moving parts is essential after every 24 hours of use. Specific lubricants are recommended for different components:
    • Light Gear Oil (Item No. 99984): For all gears, bearings, valve gears, and side rods.
    • Heavy Gear Oil (Item No. 99983): For larger locomotive gears and extended periods of time.
    • Heavy-Duty Grease (Item No. 99982): For heavier viscosity applications, such as Large Scale trains (though the manual notes it's best to use for this specific HO scale model).
    • Conductive Contact Lube (Item No. 99981): For superior electrical pickup, contact maintenance, and track cleaning.
    • The manual stresses that lubrication must not be overdone, as excessive oil can cause slipping drive wheels or short circuits. It also warns to ensure lubricants are compatible with plastic, indicating the presence of plastic components in the drive train.
  • Cleaning: Beyond track and wheel cleaning, the manual advises checking for dirt or lint between the brush and armature, and between the pick-up strip and wheels, as these can cause "jerky" operation.
  • Maintenance Schedule: Users are urged to establish a sensible maintenance schedule to extend the life and enjoyment of their railroad equipment.
  • Spare Parts: The manual includes contact information for service and spare parts, with a note that some parts may only be available as components of a larger subassembly. This indicates a modular design where certain repairs might involve replacing larger sections rather than individual tiny components. The exploded view diagram on the second page visually supports this, showing various subassemblies.

In summary, the Bachmann HO TTT DAISY is a detailed model train requiring careful operation and consistent maintenance to ensure longevity and optimal performance. Its design incorporates features like optional smoke generation and a robust mechanical system that benefits from proper lubrication and cleaning. The manual provides essential guidance for hobbyists to enjoy their model railroad experience.
