Overview

The Backyard Grill Outdoor LP Gas Barbecue Grill, Model No. BY16-101-002-05 / Stock No. GBC1429WB, is designed for outdoor residential use only, providing a versatile cooking experience with liquid propane (LP) gas. It is not intended for commercial use or as a heater, as toxic fumes can accumulate and cause asphyxiation. The grill is safety certified for use in the United States and/or Canada, and any modifications will void the warranty and create a safety hazard.

Function Description:

This barbecue grill serves as an outdoor cooking appliance, utilizing LP gas to heat three main burners and one side burner. It features a lid with a temperature gauge, cooking grids, heat plates, and a warming rack for various cooking styles. The side burner provides additional cooking space for pots and pans, expanding the grill's functionality beyond direct grilling. Control knobs allow for precise flame adjustment for each burner, enabling users to manage cooking temperatures effectively. A lighting rod is included for manual ignition if the igniter fails. The grill is designed for easy assembly and includes a cart frame with wheels for portability and a dedicated space for an LP gas tank.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: Liquid Propane (LP) gas only. Conversion to natural gas is dangerous and will void the warranty.
  • LP Gas Cylinder Requirements: Must be constructed and marked in accordance with U.S. Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) or National Standard of Canada, CAN/CSA-B339 specifications. Must be arranged for vapor withdrawal and have a listed overfilling prevention device (OPD). Only cylinders with a compatible connection device and a cylinder collar to protect the valve should be used. Never fill beyond 80 percent full.
  • Inlet Pressure: Designed to operate at an inlet pressure of 11 inches water column.
  • Clearance: Minimum clearance from sides and back of unit to combustible construction is 36 inches (91.4 cm). Do NOT use under any type of overhang or roof.
  • Side Burner/Side Shelf Weight Limit: Maximum weight for the side burner and side shelf is 33 lbs (15 kg). Using pots larger than 6 quarts in capacity could exceed this limit, leading to failure of grill cart components.
  • Burners: Three main burners and one side burner.
  • Ignition: Features an igniter for convenient lighting. A lighting rod is provided for manual ignition.
  • Assembly Time: Approximately one hour.

Usage Features:

  • Outdoor Use Only: Strictly for outdoor use, away from buildings, garages, or any enclosed areas. Maintain a ten-foot (3.05 m) clearance from walls, structures, or buildings.
  • Pre-Operation Checks: Before each use, ensure all labels, packaging, and protective films are removed. Perform a leak test before lighting the grill and each time the LP cylinder is connected. Visually inspect burner connections and the burner/venturi tube for proper fit over the orifice. Check for obstructions in airflow to the burners, including spiders, insects, and webs.
  • Lighting Procedure (Main Burners): Open the lid. Ensure all control knobs are in the "OFF" position. Connect the LP gas tank and turn its valve to "OPEN." Push and turn any control knob to (HIGH). The burner should light. If not, repeat up to three times. If ignition does not occur in 5 seconds, turn the control knob to "OFF," wait 5 minutes, and repeat. If the igniter fails, use the included lighting rod with a lit match to light the burners through the cooking grid and heat plates.
  • Lighting Procedure (Side Burner): Open the lid. Ensure the control knob is in the "OFF" position. Connect the LP gas tank and turn its valve to "OPEN." Push and turn the side burner control knob to (HIGH). The burner should light. If not, repeat up to three times.
  • Flame Observation: After lighting, observe the burner flame. Normal flames should be soft blue with yellow tips between 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) in height. Noisy, hard blue flames or wavy yellow flames indicate a need for cleaning or replacement.
  • Flare-Up Control: Flare-ups are a natural part of grilling but excessive flare-ups can over-cook food and be dangerous. To minimize flare-ups, trim excess fat from meats, cook high-fat content meats on (LOW) setting or indirectly, and ensure the grill is on a hard, level, non-combustible surface allowing grease to drain into the grease receptacle. If a grease fire occurs, close the lid AND turn control knob(s) to "OFF" until the grease burns out. Do NOT use water on a grease fire.
  • Shutting Off: Turn the LP gas tank valve to "CLOSED," then turn all control knobs clockwise to the "OFF" position. A "poof" sound is normal as the last of the LP gas is burned. Disconnect the LP gas tank.
  • Safety Precautions: Never operate the grill unattended. Keep children and pets away. Do NOT move the grill when in use; allow it to cool first. Always open the lid carefully and slowly to avoid burns from heat and steam. Do NOT attempt to disconnect the gas regulator or any gas fitting while the grill is in use. Keep gas hoses away from hot surfaces and dripping hot grease. Keep all electrical cords away from a hot grill.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning and Inspection: The grill should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected on a regular basis. All cleaning and maintenance should be performed when the grill is cool and the fuel supply is disconnected.
  • Surface Cleaning: Wipe surfaces clean with mild dishwashing detergent or baking soda mixed with water. For stubborn surfaces, use a citrus-based degreaser and a nylon scrubbing brush. Rinse clean with water and allow to air dry. Do NOT use abrasive cleaners or oven cleaner.
  • Main Burner Cleaning:
    1. Turn LP gas tank valve to "CLOSED" and all control knobs to "OFF." Disconnect the LP gas tank.
    2. Remove cooking grids and heat plates.
    3. Remove burners by removing fasteners, lifting them up and away from the gas valve orifice. Disconnect the wire from the spark electrode.
    4. Clean the venturi of each burner with a small bottle brush or compressed air.
    5. Remove all food residue and dirt from the burner surface.
    6. Clean any clogged ports with a stiff wire (e.g., an opened paper clip).
    7. Inspect burners for damage (cracks or holes); replace if found.
    8. Re-install burners, ensuring the gas valve orifice is correctly positioned inside each burner/venturi tube and checking the spark electrode position.
    9. Replace heat plates and cooking grids.
    10. Reconnect LP gas tank and perform a leak test.
  • Side Burner Cleaning:
    1. Turn LP gas tank valve to "CLOSED" and all control knobs to "OFF." Disconnect the LP gas tank.
    2. Remove the side burner grid.
    3. Remove the burner by removing screws, lifting it up and away from the gas valve orifice.
    4. Clean the venturi of the burner with a small bottle brush or compressed air.
    5. Remove all food residue and dirt from the burner surface.
    6. Clean any clogged ports with a stiff wire.
    7. Inspect the burner for damage; replace if found.
    8. Re-install the burner, ensuring the gas valve orifice is correctly positioned inside the burner/venturi tube and checking the spark electrode position.
    9. Replace the cooking grid.
    10. Reconnect the LP gas tank and perform a leak test.
  • Storage: Before storing, turn the LP gas tank valve to "CLOSED" and all control knobs to "OFF." Disconnect the LP gas tank and store it outdoors in a well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight, with the protective cap cover on. Clean all surfaces. Lightly coat the burner(s) and cooking grid(s) with cooking oil to prevent excessive rusting. If storing the grill indoors, the LP tank must be disconnected and stored outdoors. If storing outdoors, cover the grill with a grill cover for protection.
