Programming the Baofeng UV-5R for SO-50 Operation

Set Radio to Frequency Mode

Set the radio to FREQUENCY MODE by pressing the VFO/MR button.

Set Downlink and Uplink Frequencies

Program the radio with downlink frequency 436.800 and uplink frequency 145.850.

Configure CTCSS Tone

Set Menu 13 (T-CTCSS) to 67.0 Hz for the transmit frequency access tone.

Enable Split Operations

Set Menu 7 (TDR) to ON to enable split operations.

Assign Transmit to Uplink

Set Menu 34 (TDR-AB) to B to assign transmit function to frequency B.

Open Squelch for Weak Signals

Set Menu 0 (SQL) to 0 to open the squelch and hear weak signals.

Work the Bird in Split Mode

Confirm SPLIT mode is active, indicated by 's', for satellite operation.

Update for BFB311 Firmware Bug

Bug Description

Radio transmits on downlink frequency only when SQL=0 and TDR-AB is not OFF.

Workaround Procedure

Set Menu 34 (TDR-AB) to OFF to enable alternate transmit cycles on UL frequency.
