Specifications

Overview

The device described in the manual is a Barreto Model 712MT Hydraulic Micro Trencher.

Function Description

The Barreto Model 712MT is a hydraulic micro trencher designed for digging trenches in "normal" ground, which is defined as reasonably soft dirt and stones up to 3 inches (15 cm) in diameter. It is not recommended for extremely hard-packed ground, areas with larger stones, high clay content, or very dry or frozen conditions, where a larger trencher, backhoe, or other heavy equipment might be more suitable. The trencher utilizes a hydraulic system for its operation, including a hydraulic pump, drive motor, and trenching motor, to power the digging chain and the machine's ground drive.

Usage Features

The trencher is designed for ease of operation, with clear instructions provided for assembly, chain installation, and trenching procedures.

  • Assembly: The manual provides instructions for installing the cushion pad, boom cushion, and boom. It highlights the weight of the boom and suggests assistance for installation.
  • Chain Installation: Detailed steps are provided for correctly installing the digging chain, ensuring the cutting edges face the correct direction. The chain tension is adjustable via a boom adjuster screw, aiming for approximately 1" (3.81 cm) of slack.
  • Operator Training: Rental companies are advised to demonstrate all machine operations to customers, including starting the engine, shutting off gas for transport, loading/unloading from a trailer, and the trenching procedure.
  • Hour Meter: Equipped with a DGI® TACH/HOUR meter to track machine operation hours for timely maintenance and to display engine RPMs using a wand magnet.
  • Wheel Drive Unloader Valve: This valve, located on the right-hand side behind the engine, controls wheel speed during trenching. It is factory preset but can be fine-tuned in the field. If wheels spin excessively, the valve is set too high and needs to be adjusted counter-clockwise. If the machine progresses too slowly without wheel spin, the valve is set too low and needs to be adjusted clockwise. The goal is minimal wheel spin with the engine working but not overloaded. Light pressure on the handlebar can improve wheel traction.
  • Safety: The manual emphasizes safety warnings, including avoiding contact with hot engine/muffler/hydraulic components and hydraulic fluid under pressure. It also includes a California Proposition 65 warning regarding chemicals known to cause cancer and reproductive harm.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the Barreto 712MT.

  • Routine Checks: Operators should routinely check the condition of the trencher, including the dig chain boom guard, muffler guard, hydraulic hoses and fittings, fuel lines, fasteners, and safety decals. Any damaged or unreadable decals should be replaced.
  • Hydraulic System Maintenance:
    • Initial fill: The trencher typically arrives with approximately 1.5 U.S. gallons of hydraulic fluid, but levels should be checked using the sight gauge and topped up if necessary.
    • Oil Level Recheck: Recheck the oil level after the trencher has run and oil has circulated.
    • Filter Change: Change the hydraulic fluid filter after the first 50 hours of use, and every 200 hours thereafter. Add approximately one quart (1 liter) of hydraulic fluid with each filter change.
    • Draining: To drain hydraulic fluid, remove the fitting on the underside of the trencher body.
    • Leak Checks: Regularly check all hydraulic fittings for leaks and tighten as needed.
    • Coupler Gap: If engine-to-pump couplers are moved, ensure a 1/16” gap between them upon reinstallation to prevent rapid wear and pump failure.
  • Engine Maintenance: Service the engine according to the engine owner's manual, covering air filter changes, oil level checks, filling, draining, and disposal of engine oil and fuel, as well as off-season storage. It's critical to move the fuel shutoff lever to the closed position after stopping the engine to prevent fuel leakage into the cylinder and crankcase, which could void the engine warranty.
  • Lubrication Requirements: Grease points are indicated on the machine with a diagram decal and in the manual.
    • Axle: Weekly, or every 30 hours of use.
    • Spindle: Daily, or every 6 hours of use.
    • Chain Roller: Daily, or every 6 hours of use.
  • Off-Season Storage: The trencher can be stored at any ambient temperature.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a comprehensive troubleshooting guide to address common issues such as hydraulic system malfunction, engine lugging, chain failure to rotate, wheels failing to turn, hydraulic fluid leaks, foaming hydraulic fluid, and boom not lifting/lowering.
  • Warranty: Barreto Manufacturing, Inc. provides a one-year warranty on equipment (two years for fuel components), covering defects in material and workmanship. Engines, engine-attached fuel tanks, accessories, batteries, and tires are warranted by their original manufacturers. Wear parts like dig chains, teeth, sprockets, and bearings are excluded unless a defect contributes to premature wear.
