Overview

The Barreto Models 1324D and 1624D are hydraulic trenchers designed for digging trenches in various ground conditions. This owner's manual provides comprehensive information for operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure safe and efficient use of the equipment.

Function Description

The primary function of the Barreto trencher is to dig trenches. It utilizes a hydraulic system to power a digging chain, which is equipped with teeth for cutting through soil and small stones. The machine is designed for use in "normal" ground, which typically includes reasonably soft dirt and stones up to 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter. For harder ground conditions, such as those with larger stones, high clay content, very hard-packed soil, very dry soil, or frozen ground, the manual suggests considering alternative, heavier equipment like a backhoe.

The trencher features a boom that can be lowered into the ground, and the digging chain rotates around this boom to excavate the trench. The machine also includes a wheel drive system, allowing it to move forward and backward during trenching operations. Control levers on the handlebars enable the operator to manage the digging chain's movement (forward, neutral, reverse) and the wheel drive speed.

Usage Features

The Barreto trencher is designed with several features to facilitate its operation:

  • Handlebars and Controls: The machine is operated from the rear, with controls located on the handlebars. References to "right side" or "left side" in the manual are relative to the operator's position with both hands on the handlebars.
  • Boom Installation: The boom is installed onto a pivot/mount, ensuring the 7/8" wide wear strip is on the bottom side. An adjuster screw allows for proper tensioning of the digging chain.
  • Digging Chain Installation: The digging chain is installed by sliding it under the sprocket, ensuring the teeth face the correct cutting direction (forward on the top of the boom, rearward on the bottom). After the boom is lowered onto the chain, a master link or link pin secures it. The chain slack is adjusted using the boom adjuster screw, aiming for approximately 2 inches of space between the middle of the boom and the chain when the boom is horizontal.
  • Hydraulic System: The trencher relies on a hydraulic system for its power. The hydraulic reservoir level is checked via a sight glass on the left side of the tank. The manual specifies the type of hydraulic fluid to use based on ambient temperatures (ISO 68 for +32°F to +90°F, ISO 46 for below +32°F). It's crucial not to overfill the tank.
  • Engine Operation: The engine is typically serviced before shipping, but users are advised to check oil and fuel levels and add as needed before starting. The manual emphasizes the importance of moving the fuel shutoff lever to the closed position after stopping the engine to prevent fuel leakage into the cylinder and crankcase, which could void the engine warranty. A critical warning is provided against running the engine without hydraulic oil, as this will cause severe damage to the hydraulic pump.
  • Hour Meter: A DGI® TACH/HOUR meter tracks machine operation hours, aiding in timely routine maintenance. The meter is pre-set to enter "Flash Alert" mode at 25-hour intervals, prompting oil changes, which Barreto Manufacturing strongly recommends due to heavy-duty use. The "Flash Alert" can be reset using a "Key Kancel Wand" or a small mechanic's pick-up magnet.
  • Cable Adjustments: The manual details adjustments for the wheel drive valve cable, digging chain valve lever, axle lock, and speed cable. These adjustments are crucial for proper machine function, ensuring correct lever movement, preventing creep, and maintaining appropriate tension. For instance, the wheel drive valve cable adjustment involves measuring actuator arm movement to achieve a specific range (7/16" to 1/2"). The digging chain valve lever adjustment ensures the chain valve is fully activated when the control is in the "ON" position. The axle lock adjustment ensures the lower lock lever moves 9/16" to 5/8" between LOCK and UNLOCK positions. Speed cable adjustments are made to prevent the trencher from creeping when the clutch lever is pulled up and the speed lever is in neutral.
  • Speed Control Tension Adjustment: The tension of the speed control handle can be adjusted by tightening or loosening a socket head bolt located under the speed control, accessible after removing the back cover.

Maintenance Features

Routine maintenance is essential for the longevity and safe operation of the Barreto trencher. The manual outlines several key maintenance tasks and considerations:

  • Qualified Personnel: Only trained and qualified personnel should perform maintenance or repairs.
  • Shutdown Procedure: Before any service, maintenance, adjustments, repairs, or long-term storage, the "SHUT DOWN PROCEDURE" in the OPERATOR'S MANUAL must be followed.
  • Cool-Down Period: Operators are warned not to touch the engine, muffler, or hydraulic components until they have cooled down completely, as these parts can cause serious burns.
  • Hydraulic Fluid Safety: Contact with hydraulic fluid is to be avoided, as it is under extreme pressure when the machine is operating and can cause burns or poisoning if it gets under the skin.
  • Lowering the Dig Chain Boom (Without Power): Instructions are provided for safely lowering the boom if power is unavailable, involving supporting the boom with a hoist or forklift and carefully loosening hydraulic hoses. A warning highlights the boom's weight and the need for multiple workers if manual support is necessary.
  • Regular Checks: Operators should routinely check and, if necessary, clean, tighten, repair, or replace the dig chain boom guard, muffler guard, hydraulic hoses and fittings, fuel lines, fasteners, and safety decals.
  • Decal Maintenance: Safety decals should be cleaned with soap and water, avoiding abrasive cleaners or solvents. Damaged or missing decals must be replaced, and new decals should be applied to clean, dry surfaces at temperatures above 40°F (5°C).
  • Engine Service: The engine should be serviced according to its owner's manual, covering aspects like air filter changes, oil level checks, filling, draining, disposal of engine oil, and fuel, as well as off-season storage.
  • Hydraulic Oil Filter Change: The hydraulic oil filter should be changed after the first 50 hours of use and every 200 hours thereafter. One quart of hydraulic oil should be added to the reservoir with each filter change. Old filters must be discarded according to environmental standards.
  • Leak Checks: All hydraulic fittings should be checked for leaks and tightened as necessary.
  • Greasing Schedule: A detailed greasing schedule is provided for various components:
    • Daily: Boom Pivot, Outboard Bearings, Cylinder Pins (2), Cylinder Rod End (thru hole in motor cover), Sprocket Hub Bearing.
    • Weekly: Front Wheel Axle.
    • Monthly: Wheel Hubs (1 zerk for each hub).
    • Daily: Chain Roller.
  • Coupler Gap: If the couplers between the engine and the pump are moved or removed, it is critical to ensure a 1/16" gap between them when reinstalled to prevent rapid wear and pump failure.
  • Off-Season Storage: The trencher can be stored at any ambient temperature during the off-season.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive troubleshooting guide is included to help diagnose and resolve common issues related to the hydraulic system, chain rotation, wheel drive, engine performance, oil leaks, and foaming hydraulic oil. This guide provides potential causes and recommended solutions, such as adjusting cables, adding oil, priming the pump, replacing worn parts, or checking relief valves. For example, if the entire hydraulic system does not operate, potential causes include a broken drive valve cable or low hydraulic oil. If the chain fails to rotate but wheels drive, issues could range from improperly adjusted chain valve controls to a worn chain motor or a sheared key.

The manual also includes a "Machine Identification Record" section for users to fill in details like machine model and serial numbers, and engine manufacturer, model, and serial numbers, which is useful for future reference and parts ordering.
