All models feature a manual defrost system and are designed to operate within an ambient temperature range of 55°F (13°C) to 90°F (32°C).

Usage Features

  • Temperature Control: The freezer is equipped with a rotary temperature control knob with settings from "1 (warmest)" to "7 (coldest)". Setting "0" turns off the cooling cycle but not the electrical power. Setting "7" is a quick-frozen mode, causing the compressor to run continuously; frequent use is not recommended.
  • Indicator Lights: A green "Power" light indicates electrical connection and power supply, glowing even if the compressor is off or failed. A red "Alarm" light illuminates when the unit is plugged in and stays on until the interior temperature drops below -11°C (12.2°F). It will also turn on if the interior temperature rises above -11°C.
  • Storage Baskets: The freezer includes one or more storage baskets for organizing odd-shaped items, which can be slid or lifted out for access to other contents.
  • Food Loading: When loading, only freeze three pounds of fresh food per cubic foot of freezer space at one time, and distribute packages evenly.
  • Restart Delay: If the unit is unplugged, loses power, or is turned off, a 3 to 5 minute delay is required before restarting to prevent damage to the compressor.
  • Child Safety: The manual emphasizes strict precautions against child entrapment, advising never to allow children to operate, play with, or crawl inside the freezer. When disposing of an old freezer, doors should be removed and shelves left in place to prevent children from climbing inside.

Maintenance Features

  • Defrosting: The freezer requires manual defrosting when frost on the walls reaches ¼ to ½ inch thickness. This process involves removing food, turning off the thermostat, unplugging the unit, and removing the drain plug to allow water to drain. Warm water (not boiling) can be used to speed up melting, and a plastic scraper is recommended to avoid damaging cooling coils or voiding the warranty.
  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning is recommended to maintain efficiency and prevent odors. The interior should be cleaned with a damp warm cloth and a baking soda solution (2 tablespoons per quart of water). Storage baskets should be washed with a mild detergent solution. The door gasket (seal) should be kept clean, and the exterior wiped with mild detergent and warm water. Condenser coils at the back should be vacuumed when dusty.
  • Power Failure: In the event of a power failure, frozen foods will remain frozen for at least 24 hours if the freezer door remains closed. For longer outages, dry ice can be used (seven or eight pounds every 24 hours), with caution and gloves.
  • Vacations: For short vacations (less than three weeks), the freezer can remain operating. For long vacations (several months), all food should be removed, the unit unplugged, and the interior cleaned and dried. To prevent odor and mold, the door should be left slightly open or removed, ensuring it is not accessible to children.
  • Energy Saving Tips:
    • Locate the freezer in the coolest area of the room, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
    • Allow hot foods to cool to room temperature before placing them in the freezer.
    • Wrap foods properly and wipe containers dry to reduce frost buildup.
    • Avoid lining storage bins or baskets with aluminum foil, wax paper, or paper toweling, as this interferes with cold air circulation.
    • Organize and label food to minimize door openings and search times.

Safety Information

The manual includes "IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS" with DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION alerts.

  • DANGER: Indicates hazards that can result in severe personal injury or death. This includes warnings against using flammable fluids for cleaning, storing flammable vapors near the appliance, and child entrapment.
  • WARNING: Indicates hazards that can result in extensive product damage, serious personal injury, or death. This includes warnings about proper grounding, using extension cords, and the need for adequate airflow around the unit. It also warns against operating the unit in enclosed spaces and the risk of injury from moving or installing the freezer alone.
  • CAUTION: Indicates hazards that can result in minor or moderate personal injury, or property or equipment damage. This includes warnings about not using sharp or metallic instruments for defrosting and keeping fingers out of "pinch point" areas.

The freezer must be plugged into a grounded 3-prong outlet, and the grounding prong should not be removed. Extension cords and adapters are not to be used. All electrical connections must comply with state and local codes, and a dedicated 15-ampere circuit is recommended. The power cord should be secured to prevent accidental injury and never handled with wet hands.

Warranty Information

The Berg Chest Freezer comes with a 1-year limited replacement warranty, valid only in the Continental United States for the original purchaser. It covers defects in materials and workmanship. Exclusions include normal wear and tear, transfer of ownership, use outside the continental US, rust, "as is" purchases, defects not involving malfunction, improper use, installation in non-recommended locations (e.g., outdoors, residential), expenses for making the unit accessible for repair, common wear items (light bulbs, gaskets, etc.), installation damage, and repairs or modifications by unauthorized parties. The warranty does not cover damage from misuse, improper utility connection, or damage to stored contents. The buyer's sole remedy for a breach of warranty is the replacement of the unit.
