Do you have a question about the Besam SW 100 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Besam Low Energy Swing Door Operator SW 100 is a versatile electro-mechanical operator designed for both single and double doors, suitable for installations with butt hinges, offset, or center pivots. It is engineered to provide all-around safety and can be combined with a full range of sensor products. The operator is designed for internal or external installation with suitable weather protection, meeting IP 20 class of protection. It complies with IEC 335-1, ANSI/BHMA A156.19, and UL 325 standards.

Function Description:

The SW 100 utilizes a DC motor and a gear-reduction system to drive an arm system, opening the door. Closing power is provided by a motor and a clock spring. An electronic control unit, featuring a motor encoder and a microprocessor, precisely controls the door's movement.

When an opening signal is received, the door opens at an operator-adjusted speed. Before reaching the fully open position at back check, it automatically slows to a low speed. The motor stops when the selected door opening angle is achieved, holding the door open. If an obstruction is detected during opening, the door can either stall (continue trying to open during the hold open time) or stop (close after 2 seconds, even if the hold open time has not expired), selectable via a dip switch.

After the hold open time elapses, the operator automatically closes the door using spring force and the motor. The door slows to a low speed at latch check before reaching the fully closed position, where it is kept closed by spring power or extended closing force from the motor.

Usage Features:

The SW 100 offers a range of features for enhanced functionality and safety:

  • Power Failure Mode: During a power failure, the operator functions as a door closer with controlled closing speed. It can be equipped with two 12 V NiMH batteries for backup operation. In "Power save" mode, the operator finishes the current cycle and then switches off, waking up for new cycles via the KEY input. In "Convenience mode," it operates normally until batteries are discharged. Fully charged batteries can typically open and close a door 300 times.
  • Spring Force Adjustment: The operator is factory-set with a spring pre-tension of 210°. This can be electronically adjusted with a potentiometer to achieve the required closing force.
  • Extended Closing Force/Torque (CLTQ): A potentiometer allows for extending the closing force/torque beyond normal spring power.
  • Power Assist (POAS): When the POAS potentiometer is turned clockwise, the motor provides or increases power assist for manual door opening.
  • Push and Go (PAG): A dip switch enables "Push and go" functionality, allowing the door to open from any position with a gentle push.
  • Overhead Presence Detector (OPD), Frame Mounted: When an OPD sensor is mounted on the frame or operator header, it can keep the door open or closed based on activity in its field. It is not active during opening, closing, program mode OFF, manual opening, or battery operation (Power Save Mode).
  • Mat Safety: If a mat is used, a closed door will not open if someone steps on it, and an open door will not close. Opening impulses are prevented during closing if someone is on the mat. The mat is not active in program mode OFF, manual opening, or battery operation (Power Save Mode).
  • Kill Function: When activated, the kill function ignores all signals and closes the door(s) at normal speed. It can be configured for manual reset. The lock will engage when kill is active, regardless of the program selector setting.
  • Lock Functionality: The control unit provides a 24 V DC output for external locks, with dip switches to select 12 V or 24 V DC, and options for locked with or without power. A dip switch and potentiometer control lock release and opening delay. A "lock kick" dip switch helps overcome binding in the locking device during closing.
  • Program Selector: Inputs for OPEN, EXIT, and OFF modes. AUTO is the default if no program selector is used.
  • Impulses: Inputs for Outer impulse, Key impulse, and Open/Close impulse. The Open/Close function uses the door status as an indicator, allowing an open door to close after an Open/Close impulse. The default max. Hold Open Time is 15 minutes, which can be set to infinite.
  • Presence Impulse, Door Mounted: Active during fully open and closing, mounted on the approach side of the door. It is ignored once the door is closed until the next impulse. For double doors, it re-opens both doors. Not active in program mode OFF, manual opening, or battery operation.
  • Presence Detection, Door Mounted: Stops the door if an object is detected on the swing side. If the object clears and hold open time remains, the door continues to open. A blanking potentiometer adjusts the sensor to avoid detecting nearby walls. For double doors, it stops both doors (except for double egress doors, which have configurable behavior). Not active in program mode OFF, manual opening, or battery operation.
  • Monitored Safety Sensors: Both presence impulse and presence detection sensors can be monitored. If a sensor fails, the operator will not accept impulses and will function as a manual door closer.
  • Open Door Indication: A relay output indicates an opening cycle or a specific door position, adjustable via the blanking potentiometer.
  • Error Indication: A potential-free contact (COM/NO/NC) is available for external error indication.

Maintenance Features:

The manual outlines a planned maintenance checklist to ensure optimal performance and safety:

  • Measure / Adjust Speeds: Verify and adjust opening and closing speeds to comply with ANSI/BHMA A156.19 and local codes.
  • Measure / Adjust Forces: Verify and adjust operating forces to comply with ANSI/BHMA A156.19 and local codes.
  • Measure / Adjust Time Delays: Verify and adjust hold open times and other delays to comply with ANSI/BHMA A156.19.
  • Check Functioning: Inspect mats, sensors, the operator/control unit, and push plates according to device checklists and AAADM standards.
  • Check Signage: Ensure all signs are in place, readable, and in good condition.
  • Check Door Hinging / Mechanical Soundness: Inspect all attachments, covers, arms, crash bars, and other mechanical components.
  • Check Safety Features: Verify finger guards, glass and glass stops, trip hazards, rails, and sharp edges.
  • Check Emergency Egress: If equipped, ensure emergency egress functionality is operational.
  • Check Wiring: Inspect all wiring for good connections, proper insulation, and clearance from moving parts.
  • Check Battery Backup: If equipped, verify the battery backup system.
  • Daily Safety Checklist: Go through the daily safety checklist with the facility manager.

The manual also provides detailed instructions for installation, electrical connection, start-up procedures (including auto-setting and advanced adjustments for back-check and latch-check), and troubleshooting common faults with corresponding remedies. It emphasizes that only Besam-trained experts should carry out installation, adjustment, repairs, and service to prevent injury, material damage, and product malfunction.
