Overview

This document is an owner's manual for a Bestway Flowclear 58663E Sand Filter, providing comprehensive instructions for its safe installation, operation, and maintenance. The manual emphasizes safety precautions, particularly regarding electrical connections and proper handling of the unit.

The primary function of the Bestway Flowclear 58663E Sand Filter is to filter pool water, ensuring it remains clean and clear. It is designed for use with storable pools, which can be readily disassembled for storage and reassembled. The sand filter operates by pumping pool water through a sand bed, which traps particles and debris before returning the cleaned water to the pool.

Key usage features revolve around the multi-port control valve, which allows users to select from six different functions:

  • Filter: This is the primary operational mode, used for continuous filtration of pool water. Water is pumped through the sand bed, cleaned, and returned to the pool. The manual advises that the valve should be in this position 99% of the time.
  • Backwash: This function is used to clean the sand bed when it becomes saturated with dirt. Water is pumped downwards through the collector hub and upwards through the sand bed, dislodging trapped debris, which is then discharged out of Port D. This process is crucial for maintaining filtration efficiency.
  • Rinse: After backwashing, the rinse function is used to settle the sand bed and remove any remaining dirty water from the filter. Water is pumped downwards through the sand bed, up through the collector hub, and then discharged out of Port D. This step prepares the filter for normal operation after a backwash cycle.
  • Circulate: This function allows pool water to bypass the sand filter entirely. It is useful for circulating water and chemicals without filtering, or if the filter is broken and debris needs to be collected in the debris screens.
  • Closed: This setting stops water flow between the sand filter and the pool, effectively shutting off the system. The manual explicitly warns against operating the sand filter with the control valve in the closed position, as this can cause serious damage.
  • Drain: This function is used to drain water from the pool. Water is pumped directly out of Port D, bypassing the filter and not returning to the pool.

The manual provides detailed instructions for connecting the sand filter to various pool types, including those with 1.25-inch (32 mm) valves, and illustrates different connection methods. It also highlights the importance of proper grounding and the use of a Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) for electrical safety. A GFCI test procedure is included, emphasizing that the GFCI must be tested before each use to ensure it interrupts power correctly.

Maintenance features are critical for the longevity and effective operation of the sand filter. The manual outlines several important maintenance tasks:

  • Sand Filter Maintenance: Users are advised to monitor the pressure gauge. An increase in pressure (above 0.45 Bar or 6.5 PSI) or reduced water flow indicates that the sand bed needs cleaning. The backwash and rinse functions are used for this purpose. The manual recommends cleaning the sand bed once a month or less regularly, depending on pool usage, and warns against cleaning it too frequently.
  • Cleaning the Strainer: The strainer, located within the pump, collects larger debris before it reaches the sand filter. The manual provides steps to switch off the filter, close connection valves, remove the strainer cover, clean the strainer, and reassemble it. Regular cleaning of the strainer is essential to prevent reduced sand filter performance.
  • Lowering or Draining Pool Water: Instructions are provided for using the drain function to remove water from the pool, which is useful for maintenance or winterization. A warning against dry running the sand filter during this process is included.
  • Winterization: For areas with freezing temperatures, the manual provides detailed winterizing instructions to protect the equipment from damage. This includes backwashing the sand filter, draining the pool, unscrewing the drain valve cap to release remaining water, disconnecting hoses, completely pouring out the sand, drying all components, and storing the sand filter in a dry location out of reach of children.

The manual also includes a troubleshooting section to help users diagnose and resolve common issues, such as the sand filter not operating, sand flowing into the pool, no water flow, excessive filter pressure, control valve leaks, and connector leaks. For further support, users are directed to the Bestway USA website and YouTube channel.

Overall, the Bestway Flowclear 58663E Sand Filter is presented as a user-friendly and essential piece of equipment for maintaining clean pool water, with clear instructions for safe and effective operation and maintenance.
