Overview

The Biondo Mega 350/450 is a microprocessor-controlled timing device designed for drag racing, specifically for both Bracket and Pro Tree racing. It features discrete I/O (input-output) construction and retains all settings in memory even when power is disconnected. The unit is equipped with a large, illuminated LCD and a dust and splash-proof keypad with a positive feel for easy reading and operation day or night. It also includes a self-test mode for all display functions.

Key Functions and Features:

  • Dual Operating Modes: The Mega 350/450 supports two distinct operating modes: Bracket mode and Pro mode. Each mode has its own independent settings, which are saved in memory.
  • Timing Control: It offers precise microprocessor-controlled timing for various racing scenarios.
  • Push-Button Inputs: The device allows for two separate push-button inputs (P.B. 1 and P.B. 2) for hitting the tree twice, providing flexibility for different starting strategies. It also includes a dedicated Tap P.B. terminal and a Line Lock P.B. terminal.
  • Delay Settings: Features programmable Tap Up/Down for adjusting delay times.
  • Throttle Stop Control: Capable of running two separate throttle stops simultaneously. It supports high and low range settings for its 4-Stage Timers.
  • Starting Line Enhancer (S.L.E.): Includes a programmable S.L.E. feature to control the starting line RPM.
  • Throttle Stop Override (P.T.S.O.): Features a programmable P.T.S.O. for the 4-Stage Timer.
  • Shifting: Supports up to five shifts per pass, configurable by time or RPM. It works with 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12-cylinder engines.
  • Selectable Function Output (S.F.O.): A versatile output with four distinct functions: secondary transbrake, second throttle stop timer, Starting Line Enhancer (S.L.E.), and Line Lock Controller.
  • Built-in Diagnostics: Includes an instant timing cycle reset and a built-in digital tachometer.
  • Driver's Reaction Tester: A built-in feature to help drivers test and improve their reaction times using the vehicle's buttons.
  • Replay Tach (Mega 450 Only): The Mega 450 model includes a Replay Tach with two record speeds (HI for 15 seconds, LO for 30 seconds) and a digital data port for downloading recorded pass data.

Technical Specifications:

  • Input Voltage Range: 10 to 18 Volts DC (16 Volt compatible).
  • Operating Temperature Range: 0 to 150 degrees F.
  • Push-button Current: 1 AMP at 12 VDC.
  • Tach and RPM Switch Range: 800 to 12750 RPM in 50 RPM increments.
  • Outputs: Four separate outputs, all rated at 15 Amps: Transbrake, Selectable Function Output (S.F.O.), Throttle Stop, and Shifter.
  • Inputs: Five separate inputs: P.B. 1, P.B. 2, Tap P.B., L.L. P.B., and Tach.

Usage Features:

  • Bracket Mode:
    • Dial-ins and Delays: Manages "Your Dial-in" and "Their Dial-in" times, calculating a Crossover time for the Transbrake release. It also supports a "second hit" at the tree using Delay 2.
    • Tap Feature: Allows for programmable time adjustments (0-99 thousandths of a second) to be added or subtracted from the delay time via the Tap push-button.
    • How Late: Displays which hit (Delay 1 or Delay 2) was used to release the Transbrake and the "How Late" time, indicating how much later the other delay would have released.
    • Push-button Modes: Offers three modes: "One button – one hit at the tree," "Two buttons – two hits at the tree," and "One button – two hits at the tree."
    • Push-button Interrupt Time: A programmable feature to disable P.B. 1 and P.B. 2 inputs after Transbrake release, preventing accidental reapplication.
    • Selectable Function Output (S.F.O.): Configurable for S.L.E., second throttle stop, Line Lock control, or secondary transbrake output.
    • Starting Line Enhancer (S.L.E.): When active, closes the throttle under specific conditions and opens it at a programmed time before Transbrake release. Special settings (11.11 and 22.22) provide pre-set release times or Pro mode activation.
    • Programmable Throttle Stop Override (P.T.S.O.): Allows for programmable time to be subtracted from Stages 2 and 4 of the 4-Stage Timer by pressing the Tap push-button.
    • 4-Stage Timer: Controls throttle stop operation with four stages: Stage 1 (throttle stop turns on), Stage 2 (duration throttle stop stays on), Stage 3 (throttle stop turns on second time), and Stage 4 (duration throttle stop stays on second time). All stages start counting from Transbrake release, except Stage 2 and 4 which start after Stage 1 and 3 respectively.
    • Shift Modes: Up to five shifts can be set by time or RPM. Shift points are adjustable, and the shift output mode (HI/LO) can be configured.
    • Peak RPM: Displays the highest RPM reached since the last clear.
    • Number of Cylinders: Configurable for 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12-cylinder engines.
  • Pro Mode:
    • Designed for Pro Light racing, with unique settings for Delay time, a 2-Stage timer, and a single Shift Point.
    • The P.T.S.O. value, S.F.O. mode, and Shift Output Mode are common to both Bracket and Pro modes but must be changed in Bracket mode setup screens.
    • The Pro 2-Stage timer functions similarly to the first two stages of the 4-Stage timer.
    • Shift Point and Shift Mode: Adjustable for time or RPM shifts.
    • Delay Time: Programmable delay for the Transbrake.
  • Driver's Reaction Tester: To use, enter Reaction Test Mode via the Set Up key. Press and hold a push-button, release when eights are displayed to measure reaction time.
  • Replay Tach (Mega 450 Only): Records engine RPM over time. HI speed records for 15 seconds, LO speed for 30 seconds. Recording is armed via the Line Lock push-button. Shift points and RPM at shifts are also recorded. Data can be downloaded to a Digital Viewer.
  • Line Lock Push-button: Primarily engages Line Lock solenoids for burnouts. Also arms/starts Replay Tach recording in HI/LO speed modes.
  • By-pass Push-button: Allows engaging the Transbrake solenoid without starting a timing cycle, useful for backing up.

Maintenance Features:

  • Clearing How Late and Tap Count: Can be reset to zero from screen 2.
  • Clearing Peak RPM: Can be reset to zero from screen 6 when the engine is off.
  • Timing Cycle Cancellation: The Clear key can cancel any uncompleted push-button interrupt time, stage timers, and shift points after the Transbrake has released. This acts as a reset for the unit. However, it does not cancel a pass being recorded.
  • Wiring Recommendations: Includes detailed instructions for connecting terminals, emphasizing the use of 15 Amp fuses for outputs and proper grounding to steel (not aluminum). Warns against connecting output terminals directly to ground to prevent damage.
  • Mounting Recommendations: Advises angling the unit's LCD towards the driver's eyes for optimal legibility in various light conditions.
