Overview

BIOS Diagnostics™ Compact Blood Pressure Monitor BD323

The BIOS Diagnostics™ Compact Blood Pressure Monitor BD323 is a medical device designed for convenient and easy operation, providing a simple yet accurate method to measure blood pressure and pulse rate at home. This device utilizes oscillometric technology to measure arterial blood pressure and pulse rate. The cuff wraps around the arm and is automatically inflated by an air pump. A sensor in the device detects weak fluctuations of pressure in the cuff, produced by the extension and contraction of the arm's artery in response to each heartbeat. The amplitude of these pressure waves is measured, converted into millimeters of mercury (mmHg), and displayed on the screen.

The BD323 monitor meets the accuracy requirements of Hypertension Canada and has been clinically tested for accuracy. It is designed to help users monitor their blood pressure regularly and maintain a record of measurements, which can assist physicians in diagnosing and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Operating Environment: 5 to 40°C (41 to 104°F) with 15% to 85% Relative Humidity (RH).

  • Weight: 217 g (not including batteries).
  • Dimensions: 103 x 103 x 65 mm.
  • Measuring Procedure: Oscillometric during deflation.
  • Measurement Range: 0-299 mmHg.
  • Pulse Range: 40-199 beats per minute.
  • Resolution: 1 mmHg.
  • Static Accuracy: Pressure within ± 3 mmHg.
  • Pulse Accuracy: ± 5% of the reading.
  • Voltage Source: 4 x 1.5 V AAA batteries (not included) or an AC adapter (not included). The AC adapter power source is 6V D.C. 600mA.
  • Cuff: Wide range cuff for arm circumference 24 - 43 cm (9.4" - 17").

Usage Features

The BIOS Diagnostics™ Compact Blood Pressure Monitor BD323 offers several features to enhance usability and accuracy:

  • Free BPiQ App: The monitor connects via Bluetooth to Android (Version 6 and up) and iOS (iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6p, 6s, 6sP, 7.1 and up) devices. The BPiQ App allows users to send secure data to physicians for interpretation, track measurements, and manage their health.
  • Memory Features: Stores 30 blood pressure readings with corresponding time and date stamps. The oldest record is replaced by the latest measurement when memory is full.
  • BP Assessment Indicator: Displays the range within which blood pressure values lie, according to Hypertension Canada guidelines. This indicator uses a bar on the left side of the display to show if readings are in the normal (green), borderline (yellow), or danger (red) range.
    • 1-2 bars: Green zone (Normal).
    • 3 bars: Yellow zone (High Normal / Pre-hypertensive).
    • 4 bars: Red zone (High Blood Pressure with Self / Home Monitoring).
    • 5 bars: Red zone (Moderate to Severe Hypertension).
  • Irregular Heartbeat Detection: The device detects and displays an irregular heartbeat symbol (heart with wavy line) if detected during measurement. Frequent appearance of this symbol may indicate a more serious heart problem, and users should consult their doctor.
  • 3X Averaging: This technology takes three consecutive blood pressure measurements with 60-second rest periods in between and then calculates and displays the average of the last two measurements. This method enhances reliability by reducing the impact of insufficient rest, movement effects (e.g., coughing, talking), and cuff positioning influences. Users can switch between 3X Averaging mode ("tHr") and single measurement mode ("nor").
  • Time and Date Display: Records and displays the time and date for each measurement, allowing for better tracking of blood pressure patterns.
  • Easy Setup: The device allows for easy setting of the year, month, date, and time through a sequential process using the MEM and START/STOP buttons.
  • Memory Recall: Users can recall stored measurements by pressing the MEM button. The average of all measurements is displayed first, followed by individual readings in reverse chronological order. Measurements taken in 3X Averaging mode are indicated with "AV" on the screen.
  • Clear Memory Function: Provides an option to permanently clear all stored measurements from the device's memory.
  • Cuff Fitting: The wide range cuff (24-43 cm) is designed for easy and proper fitting. It should be placed around the bare arm, about 1" (2-3 cm) above the elbow joint, with the rubber tubing over the brachial artery. The cuff should fit snugly but not too tightly, allowing two fingers to fit underneath.
  • Accurate Measurement Tips: The manual provides comprehensive guidelines for obtaining accurate measurements, including:
    • Measuring in the morning (after waking, before breakfast/medication) or 2 hours after dinner.
    • Avoiding coffee, smoking, and exercise 30 minutes before measurement.
    • Emptying the bladder if necessary.
    • Resting quietly for 5 minutes before measurement.
    • Remaining calm and quiet during measurement.
    • Taking measurements on the non-dominant arm (unless there's a significant difference between arms).
    • Sitting with back supported, feet flat on the floor, and the measurement arm resting on a table, level with the heart.
    • Not speaking during measurement.
  • Discontinuing Measurement: A measurement can be stopped at any time by pressing the START/STOP button, which will immediately deflate the cuff.
  • Automatic Shut-off: The device automatically switches off after 3 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life.

Maintenance Features

Proper care and maintenance ensure the longevity and accurate functioning of the BD323 monitor:

  • Handling: Avoid dropping or banging the unit, sudden jerks, jars, or shocks. Do not insert foreign objects into openings or vents.
  • Disassembly: Do not disassemble the unit, as this will invalidate the manufacturer's warranty.
  • Temperature: If stored at very low or freezing temperatures, allow the unit to reach room temperature before use.
  • Storage: Do not store in direct sunlight, high humidity, or dusty environments.
  • Cleaning: Clean the device with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid gasoline, thinner, or similar solvents. Spots on the cuff can be carefully removed with a damp cloth and soap; however, the cuff with bladder must not be washed in a dishwasher, clothes washer, or submerged in water.
  • Cuff Care: Handle the cuff tube carefully to prevent kinks and keep it away from sharp edges. The cuff contains a sensitive air-tight bubble and should be protected from twisting or buckling.
  • Battery Management:
    • Insert batteries with correct polarity.
    • Turn off power after use.
    • Remove and store batteries if the device will be unused for extended periods.
    • Do not mix different types, brands, or sizes of batteries (e.g., old and new, alkaline, standard, or rechargeable).
    • Do not disassemble batteries or expose them to heat or fire.
    • Dispose of batteries according to local regulations.
  • Error Messages: The device displays specific error codes (E1, E2, E3, E5, Lo) to indicate malfunctions or issues during measurement, along with suggested remedies in the manual.
  • Warranty: The BIOS Diagnostics™ blood pressure monitor comes with a 4-year warranty against manufacturing defects for the original owner. The inflation system (cuff and inflation bladder) is warranted for 2 years. The warranty does not cover damage from misuse or tampering.
  • Customer Support: BIOS Medical provides a hotline (1-866-536-2289) and email support (support@biosmedical.com) for assistance with device operation, repairs, and satisfaction guarantee claims. Repairs require returning the unit with all components, proof of purchase, and a $5.00 fee for return shipping and insurance.
