Overview

This document describes the BLACK+DECKER Portable Dehumidifier, available in several models: BDT20WTB, BDT30WTB, BDT40WTB, BDT50WTB, and BDT50PWTB. This appliance is designed to reduce humidity levels in indoor spaces, helping to create a more comfortable environment and prevent issues like mold and mildew growth. It is intended for household use only and should not be operated outdoors.

Function Description:

The portable dehumidifier extracts moisture from the air, collecting it in a removable water collection bucket. It features a control panel with a digital display to show the current humidity level and allow users to set their desired humidity. The unit can operate continuously or cycle on and off to maintain a set humidity level. It also includes a timer function for scheduled operation and an automatic defrost feature to prevent frost buildup on the evaporator coils. For continuous operation without needing to empty the bucket, the unit supports continuous drainage via a hose connection, and the BDT50PWTB model includes an internal pump for draining water up to 16 feet in height.

Important Technical Specifications:

The dehumidifiers operate on a 115 volt, 60 Hz power supply and require a 15 amp circuit. They are designed to operate within an ambient temperature range of 41°F to 90°F (5°C to 32°C) and an operating humidity range of 30% RH to 90% RH. Recommended humidity levels for optimal comfort are between 30% and 50%.

Specific model capacities and power consumption are as follows:

  • BDT20WTB:
    • Dehumidifying capacity: 20 pints per day
    • Bucket capacity: 8 pints
    • Air flow volume (high/low): 182/155 CFM
    • Power: 115v, 60 Hz, 3.5A
    • Power consumption: 260 watts
  • BDT30WTB:
    • Dehumidifying capacity: 30 pints per day
    • Bucket capacity: 8 pints
    • Air flow volume (high/low): 182/155 CFM
    • Power: 115v, 60 Hz, 4.2A
    • Power consumption: 330 watts
  • BDT40WTB:
    • Dehumidifying capacity: 40 pints per day
    • Bucket capacity: 14.3 pints
    • Air flow volume (high/low): 182/155 CFM
    • Power: 115v, 60 Hz, 5.0A
    • Power consumption: 395 watts
  • BDT50WTB:
    • Dehumidifying capacity: 50 pints per day
    • Bucket capacity: 14.3 pints
    • Air flow volume (high/low): 182/155 CFM
    • Power: 115v, 60 Hz, 7.0A
    • Power consumption: 540 watts
  • BDT50PWTB (with pump):
    • Dehumidifying capacity: 50 pints per day
    • Bucket capacity: 14.3 pints
    • Air flow volume (high/low): 182/155 CFM
    • Power: 115v, 60 Hz, 7.0A
    • Power consumption: 540 watts

The unit is equipped with a 3-wire cord and a 3-prong grounding plug for safety. It should be placed on a level surface with at least 12-18 inches of clearance around it to ensure proper airflow.

Usage Features:

  • Control Panel: Features a digital humidistat display, LED indicators for various functions (Clean Filter, Pump, Timer ON/OFF, Continuous Drain, Bucket Full, High Fan Speed), and buttons for Power, Fan Speed, Timer, Humidity Level adjustment (Increase/Decrease), and Filter reset. The BDT50PWTB model also has a Pump button.
  • Humidity Setting: Users can select a desired relative humidity between 35% and 80%, or choose "CO" for continuous operation. The unit will cycle on and off to maintain the set humidity.
  • Fan Speed: Two fan speeds (High and Low) are available.
  • Timer Function: Allows scheduling the unit to turn ON or OFF automatically. The timer can be set in 30-minute increments up to 10 hours, and then in 1-hour increments up to 24 hours.
  • Full Water Collection Bucket: When the bucket is full, the unit automatically shuts off, emits a beeping noise, and illuminates the "BUCKET FULL" indicator. Operation resumes once the bucket is emptied and correctly reinserted.
  • Continuous Drainage: The unit can be connected to a clear hose (included) or a standard garden hose (not included) for continuous water drainage, eliminating the need to manually empty the bucket. The drain hose should be led to a drain lower than the height of the drain plug, ensuring no kinks or knots.
  • Internal Pump Mode (BDT50PWTB only): This model includes an internal pump and an additional pump drain kit. The pump allows water to be drained up to 16 feet in height, providing more flexibility for drain placement (e.g., into a sink or out a window). The "PUMP" LED indicator illuminates when activated.
  • Automatic Defrost: If frost builds up on the evaporator coils, the compressor cycles off, and the fan continues to run until the frost disappears, after which normal dehumidification resumes.
  • Automatic Restart: In case of a power interruption, the dehumidifier will automatically restart with its previous settings once power is restored, except for the timer function and child lock mode, which need to be reset manually.
  • Castors: The unit comes with four castors for easy mobility, which need to be installed upon unboxing.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Cleaning: The "Clean Filter" LED indicator illuminates after approximately 250 hours of use, signaling that the filter needs cleaning. The filter can be removed from the back of the unit, cleaned with warm, soapy water, dried thoroughly, and then reinserted. Pressing the FILTER button resets the indicator. The filter should not be cleaned in a dishwasher, and the dehumidifier should not be operated without the filter in place.
  • Bucket Cleaning: The water collection bucket should be cleaned every few weeks with a mild detergent to prevent mold, mildew, and bacteria growth. It must be completely dry before being placed back into the unit.
  • Unit Housing Cleaning: To maintain the unit's appearance, avoid direct sun exposure and clean the surface with a damp cloth, drying with a soft towel.
  • Storage: For extended storage or transport, unplug the unit, clean or replace the filter, empty any excess water from the bucket, and store it in a dry place.

Safety Information:

  • Always place the unit on a level, strong surface.
  • Never use or store flammable vapors or liquids near the unit.
  • Ensure proper grounding with a 3-prong plug into a grounded wall receptacle. Do not use adapter plugs or extension cords.
  • Do not block air inlet or outlet grills.
  • Do not insert anything into the air outlet.
  • Do not use near baths, showers, swimming pools, or clothes dryers.
  • Inspect the power cord for damage before each use.
  • Unplug the unit before cleaning.
  • Do not let children play near the unit.
  • Do not operate the dehumidifier without the included filter.
  • Improper hose installation for continuous drainage can lead to water filling the bucket and causing the unit to shut off.
