WARNING
• If you are not knowledgeable about electrical systems, have an
electrical professional install this unit. The diagrams in these
instructions pertain to the installation of M2 Digital Meters and not
to the overall wiring of the vessel.
• If an inverter is installed on the vessel, its power leads must be
disconnected at the battery before the meter is installed.
• If an AC generator is installed on the vessel, it must be stopped
and rendered inoperable before the meter is installed.
• Verify that no other DC or AC sources are connected to the vessel’s
wiring before installing the meter.
CAUTION
The back of the unit is not waterproof. Do not install where the back
of the meter is exposed to water.

Overview

The Blue Sea Systems M2 OLED Tank Monitor (PN 1839) is a digital monitoring device designed to track the levels of up to four tanks, providing high and low-level alarms for each channel. This device is suitable for marine electrical systems and offers various mounting and configuration options.

Function Description:

The M2 OLED Tank Monitor allows users to monitor tank levels, configure alarms, and manage relay outputs based on these levels. It supports different types of tank senders, including North American Standard, European Standard, and Blue Sea Systems Ultrasonic senders. The monitor displays tank levels as percentages, gallons, or liters, and provides a clear OLED screen for easy readability.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Display Size: 55mm x 28mm
  • Power Supply: 7V-70V DC
  • Power Consumption: 0.3W-1.0W (variable with voltage, display intensity, and sleep mode)
  • Regulatory: Monitor face is IP66 rated, protecting against powerful water jets when installed correctly. The back of the unit is not waterproof and must be kept dry.
  • Tank Senders Supported:
    • North American Standard: Resistive type, 240-33 ohms (240 ohms indicating empty)
    • European Standard: Resistive type, 10-180 ohms (10 ohms indicating empty)
    • Blue Sea Systems Ultrasonic: Custom, uses sound waves to measure distance. Two types: 1800 for gasoline, 1810 for diesel, water, and waste.

  • Connector Pin Assignment (8 Pin Connector):

  • Relay Output: Internal MOSFET relay, drives external DC loads up to 0.5A. Protected by a thermally activated auto-resetting fuse. An inline 5A fuse is recommended for additional protection.
  • External LED Connection: Supports external LEDs (e.g., 8171). For systems >24V nominal, an additional 4K Ohms of resistance should be placed in-line.
  • External Alarm Connection: Supports external audible alarms (e.g., Floyd Bell Turbo Alarm 1070). Relay+ terminal can support 5-30V DC supply.
  • External Relay Compatibility: Can activate external relays (e.g., PN 7713, 12V or PN 7717, 24V Remote Battery Switch) for switching loads greater than 0.5A. Not compatible with 9012, 7700, 7701, 7702, & 7703 Remote Battery Switches.

Usage Features:

  • Installation:
    • Three mounting methods: surface mount, flat panel mount, and 360 panel mount.
    • Surface mount is waterproof to IP66; flat panel and 360 panel mounts are not waterproof and should not be used in exposed locations.
    • Requires all connections to the terminal block before connecting to the unit.
    • A fuse must be inserted into the in-line fuse holder on the positive (+) battery terminal as the final DC connection.
    • Safety Warning: Installation by an electrical professional is recommended for those not knowledgeable about electrical systems. Inverters and AC generators must be disconnected/stopped before installation.
  • User Interface:
    • OLED display shows Blue Sea Systems logo, serial number, and software revision on startup, followed by a System Summary screen.
    • Pop-up menu accessed by pressing any button.
    • Two-dimensional menu system navigated using UP/DOWN arrow buttons for summary information and NEXT button for detailed channel information or single parameters.
    • Setup menus accessed via the MENU button.
  • Alarm Setup & Control:
    • Configurable high and low tank level alarms for each channel.
    • Alarm thresholds can be set as percentages, gallons, or liters.
    • Alarm Delay (Tank Alarm Dly): Prevents false alarms due to tank sloshing by setting a delay timer (0-600 minutes).
    • When an alarm triggers, the buzzer sounds, the red ALARM LED lights, and the screen displays the alarm details. Pressing a button silences the buzzer, and another press returns to the previous display. The ALARM LED blinks until the condition is resolved.
    • Active alarms are indicated by flashing parameters in the display.
  • Relay Setup & Control:
    • Allows control of an external relay based on high or low tank levels.
    • Relay Normally On/Off: Sets the normal operating state (contacts closed/open).
    • Notification: Controls whether a notification is displayed when the relay activates.
    • Silence Relay: Allows the relay to deactivate after a user presses a key on the display, useful for silencing external buzzers.
    • Input Thresholds: Configurable Hi ON/OFF and Lo ON/OFF settings for each channel to prevent rapid toggling (cycling) of the relay.
    • Tank Relay Dly (Delay): Similar to alarm delay, prevents false relay activations due to tank sloshing.
  • Display Setup:
    • Brightness: Adjustable from 0% (dimmest) to 100% (brightest).
    • Sleep Timer: Sets the duration of inactivity (0-600 minutes) before the display turns off. Can be disabled (OFF).
    • Dim Timer: Sets the duration of inactivity (0-600 minutes) before the display dims. Can be disabled (OFF) or set to AUTO dim mode, where the display dims after two minutes in low ambient light.
    • Demo Mode: Displays factory-programmed values for commercial/promotional purposes. Alarms and relay settings still respond to actual measurements in Demo Mode.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Enable: Toggles display of tank and measurements. If OFF, the tank is not displayed, but alarms/relays remain active unless disabled separately.
    • Volume: Similar to Enable, toggles display of tank and measurements.
    • Show Percent: Displays tank values as a percentage (ON) or in gallons/liters (OFF).
    • Sender Type: Presets Resistance Lo and Resistance Hi values based on sender type (USA, Euro, 1810, 1811, Cstm).
    • Resistance Lo/Resistance Hi: Manually adjustable resistance values for empty and full tanks.
    • Tank Depth: Used with 1810/1811 senders, indicates tank depth in inches.
    • Tank Shape: Selectable shapes (Rect, Tri, Auto, Cstm). Auto appears after auto-calibration. Cstm indicates manual changes.
    • Custom Tank Shapes: Can be defined via Auto Calibrate or manually by entering parameters (Sensor 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100% values).
    • Auto-Calibrate: Fills the tank at a constant rate to automatically determine calibration values. Requires sensor reading <15% initially.
  • Changing System Labels:
    • Allows users to change labels for each channel (max 16 characters, 11-12 displayed in summary screens).

Maintenance Features:

  • Software Upgrade:
    • Firmware can be updated via the Software Upgrade option in the Setup menu or by forcing the meter into upgrade mode on startup.
    • Requires a USB memory stick (Micro USB Host OTG) with the firmware file (image.xxxx.bin, where xxxx is the PN of the meter).
    • Caution: Removing power or the USB memory stick during the upgrade process will render the meter inoperable.
    • Upgrade messages provide feedback on success or errors (e.g., File Not Found, Corrupted File, No USB Device, Wrong Model Number, Wrong HW Version).
  • Version Info: Displays product name, serial number, and software version.
  • Factory Reset: Restores meter to factory default settings. Requires user confirmation.
