Safety guidelines
Please read this complete set of instructions before operating the charger. It
contains important information on the correct use. For damage which results
from the non-compliance of these operating instructions, the warranty is
rendered invalid.
Warning: Explosive gases are emitted when batteries charge. Avoid flames or
sparking. Disconnect the charger from the mains before you connect the
battery. Battery acid is extremely caustic. Avoid any contact with skin or
clothing. Immediately wash with soap and water in the case of unintentional
contact.
Warning: Never charge Li-ion or other battery technologies with this charger.
This can cause serious damage to the device or start a fire. Only use for
rechargeable lead batteries in wet, AGM, or gel technology. Never place the
charger on the battery during the charging process.
Never place the charger under water, make sure that no liquids penetrate it.
Caution: With wet batteries, before connecting the charger, the acid level must
be checked. If needed, top up lead acid batteries with distilled water:
Maintenance-free batteries (gel or AGM) should not be topped off with distilled
water. This is not permitted. Avoid short circuits to the battery poles. Do not
place tools or metallic objects on the battery this can lead to short circuits and
fires. The device may only be repaired by technicians who are familiar with the
relevant safety regulations and instructions. Do not load the electrical and
charging cables through unnecessary pulling or jamming/clamping. The device
may not be operated with a damaged connection cable. Do not operate the
device in the proximity of easily flammable materials. The device heats up
during operation. Do not place the charger on flammable or sensitive surfaces.
There is a risk of fire or a risk of damaging surfaces, e.g. of seats or painted
surfaces.
Caution: The charger cable for connection to the motorcycle may not be
lengthened. Only use the charging adapter provided on the battery poles.
Caution: Do not expose the charger to excessive heat; avoid mechanical impact
caused by dropping or falling. Avoid damage or use of force on the operating
keys, e.g. with tools or objects.

Overview

The BMW Motorcycle Charger is a high-quality, microprocessor-controlled charging and trickle charging device designed for 12V BMW motorcycle batteries. It is suitable for charging wet, AGM, or gel lead-acid batteries with capacities ranging from 6 to 25 Ah. The charger can be connected via the BMW on-board socket or directly to the battery poles using a suitable charging adapter. It is specifically designed for BMW motorcycles with CAN Bus technology, operating fully automatically according to its programmed charging characteristic. The device can remain connected to the battery or vehicle for extended periods, performing charging cycles, monitoring the battery, and recharging it as necessary.

Function Description:

The charger features a membrane keyboard on the front for setting the device. It includes LED displays (yellow, green, red) to indicate its status: steady yellow for power, blinking yellow for sleep mode, steady green for battery charging, and steady red for an error. A 2-line display with 2 x 16 characters shows function and status information, which is not lit in sleep mode. Control keys include left and right for menu navigation, an OK key to confirm input and exit menus, and an F1 key to call up the language menu. Available display languages are German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.

When connected to the mains, the device displays its identification, and three LEDs light up for 2 seconds, indicating it is operational. The language menu can be accessed by pressing the F1 key for approximately 1 second. The selected language is shown in the center of the display, and users can navigate left and right to choose an option, confirming with the OK key. This menu is only accessible when the device is not charging or not connected to the battery/vehicle.

The charger's display provides various status messages. "No battery" indicates that the charger is not connected to the battery or vehicle. If this message appears despite being connected to the on-board socket, it may mean the vehicle battery is completely discharged, preventing charging via the on-board socket. In such cases, the battery should be disconnected from the vehicle and charged directly via its poles. "Short polarity reversed" appears if the charging clips are touching or if the battery is connected with reverse polarity. This message can also be displayed with deep-discharged batteries or residual voltage.

The charging process begins automatically if the battery can be charged. The upper display line shows the charging progress with bars and a percentage, while the lower line displays charging parameters (current and voltage). As charging progresses, the status display updates, with the number of bars and percentage increasing to 100% when fully charged. The charging duration depends on the battery's charging and aging condition, as well as its size.

"Charging pauses" can occur if the charger is connected to the vehicle via the on-board socket, due to the vehicle's electronic system. The device automatically resumes charging after the vehicle's electronic system releases it. "Charging Complete Battery mainten" indicates that the battery is fully charged. The device can be disconnected or remain connected, as it will monitor and recharge the battery as needed, performing equalization charging (battery maintenance). This maintenance step is primarily carried out with a directly connected battery using the charging adapter.

In "Sleep mode," activated when the battery is fully charged, the charger switches to an energy-saving state, with the "Power" LED blinking. The device remains connected, monitoring and recharging the battery as needed. After 24 hours, the charging cycle restarts. Pressing any key on the keypad wakes the device, and it returns to sleep mode after approximately 10 seconds.

A "Charging error" message is displayed if the battery cannot be charged, and the "Error" LED blinks. This indicates that the battery could not be charged according to the programmed characteristic. It does not necessarily mean the device or battery is defective. Users should disconnect and reconnect the charger from the mains to restart the process. If the problem persists, the battery and/or charger should be checked.

For deep-discharged batteries, if connected directly to the battery poles via the charging adapter, the display may show "Battery deep discharged?" and prompt "Start charging Press OK". Pressing the OK key for at least one second will initiate the charging process. If the display shows "Charge Pausing" for deep-discharged batteries connected directly to the poles, it means the battery cannot be charged. In such cases, the device should be disconnected from the mains and restarted. If the issue persists, the battery must be checked by an authorized BMW Motorrad dealer.
