Overview

This document is the Operator's Manual for a 7000 Watt Automatic Home Generator System manufactured by Briggs & Stratton Power Products Group, LLC. It provides comprehensive information on the installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the generator.

Function Description:

The Briggs & Stratton 7000 Watt Automatic Home Generator System is designed to provide backup electrical power for residential use during utility power outages. It operates automatically, sensing a power failure and starting the engine to supply electricity to the home's transfer switch. Once utility power is restored, the system allows the engine to stabilize, then shuts off, and waits for the next outage. The generator is designed for outdoor installation and requires professional setup by licensed electrical and plumbing professionals to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, industry standards, and regulations. The warranty is void if the system is not installed by certified professionals.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Rated Maximum Load Current (at 25°C/77°F, LP*): 29.2 Amps at 240 Volts
  • Rated AC Voltage: 120/240 Volts
  • Phase: Single phase
  • Rated Frequency: 60 Hertz
  • Normal Operating Range: -10°F (-23.3°C) to 104°F (40°C)
  • Output Sound Level: 81 dB(A) at 23 ft. (7 m) at full load
  • Shipping Weight: 340 lb (155 kg)
  • Fuel Type: Factory tested and adjusted for natural gas or liquid propane (LP vapor). Natural gas ratings will be 10-20% lower than LP gas ratings.
  • Engine Oil: Shipped with synthetic oil (API SJ/CF 5W-30) for wide temperature and climate conditions.
  • Battery: Requires an installer-supplied, valve-regulated, rechargeable, 12 Volt DC starting battery. The battery receives a trickle charge when the engine is not running and the unit is in AUTO mode.
  • Fuse: A 15 Amp ATO type fuse protects the DC control circuits.

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Operation: The generator system automatically starts when a utility power outage is detected and shuts down once utility power is restored.
  • System Control Panel: Features a "System Switch" with "AUTO" (normal operating mode) and "OFF" positions. It also includes a "MANUAL OVER-RIDE" button for manual starting/stopping, a "SET EXERCISE" button for programming the exercise cycle, a "Circuit Breaker" for over-current protection, and a "Digital Display" for showing total operating hours and fault codes.
  • Exercise Timer: Equipped with an exercise timer that automatically starts and exercises the system once every seven days for approximately 20 minutes. This cycle does not transfer electrical load unless a utility power outage occurs. The exercise day and time can be programmed using the "SET EXERCISE" button.
  • Fault Detection System: The generator is equipped with sensors that automatically shut down the unit in the event of potentially damaging conditions (e.g., low oil pressure, high temperature, overspeed, low battery voltage, low frequency, engine fail to start, transfer switch fault). Fault codes are displayed on the digital display to aid in troubleshooting.
  • Access Ports: The generator features several access openings and a removable roof for easy oil and filter servicing. Side panels can also be removed for more extensive access.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Service Steps: Before any maintenance, the operator must set the generator's circuit breaker to OFF, set the system switch to OFF, remove the 15 Amp fuse from the control panel, and disconnect utility power to the transfer switch.
  • Engine Oil Check and Change: The engine is pre-filled with synthetic oil. Regular oil level checks are required, and oil changes should follow the engine operator's manual. An oil drain hose is provided to facilitate oil changes.
  • Oil Filter Change: Instructions for changing the oil filter are provided in the engine operator's manual.
  • Battery Servicing: The battery requires periodic servicing, including checking charge output and ensuring secure connections. The manual provides instructions for charging the battery and emphasizes safety precautions due to explosive hydrogen gas and caustic electrolyte fluid.
  • Generator Cleaning: The unit should be kept clean and dry, free of dust, dirt, moisture, or corrosive vapors. Cooling air louvers must remain unobstructed. Cleaning should be done with a damp cloth, soft brush, vacuum cleaner, or low-pressure air, avoiding direct water spray.
  • Fault Detection System Reset: After addressing a fault condition, the system must be reset by placing the system switch in the OFF position for at least 30 seconds, then returning it to AUTO, reinstalling the 15 Amp fuse, and resetting the exercise timer.
  • Long-Term Storage: The system is designed for long-term service as a backup generator, requiring no special storage precautions. However, for extended periods out of service, technical services should be contacted for specific recommendations.
