Overview

This document describes the BroadLink RM pro+, a universal remote designed to control various devices in your home. It functions as a central hub for managing both IR (infrared) and RF (radio frequency) controlled appliances, allowing users to consolidate multiple remote controls into a single smart solution. The device is designed for ease of use, with a straightforward setup process and intuitive control through a dedicated mobile application.

Function Description

The BroadLink RM pro+ serves as a smart universal remote capable of learning and emitting IR and RF signals. This enables it to control a wide range of devices such as televisions, air conditioners, set-top boxes, DVD players, and various RF-controlled devices like curtains, garage doors, and lights. By connecting to your home's Wi-Fi network, the RM pro+ allows you to control these appliances remotely via the BroadLink app on your smartphone, even when you are away from home.

The core functionality revolves around its ability to learn signals. For IR devices, the RM pro+ can learn the signals from your existing remote controls. Once learned, these signals are stored within the device and can be triggered through the app. Similarly, for RF devices, it can capture and replicate RF signals, expanding its compatibility beyond line-of-sight infrared control. This dual capability makes it a versatile solution for automating and centralizing control over a diverse ecosystem of home electronics.

The device also supports smart configuration modes, simplifying the initial setup process. When first powered on, it automatically enters a smart configuration mode, ready to be added to your BroadLink account via the app. If issues arise, an alternative AP configuration mode is available, providing flexibility in network setup. Once configured, users can add "virtual remotes" within the app for each of their IR or RF devices, creating a personalized control interface.

Usage Features

The BroadLink RM pro+ is designed for user-friendly operation, from initial setup to daily use.

Adding the Device:

  1. Power On: Connect the RM pro+ to a USB power source. Upon first use, it will automatically enter smart configuration mode. If not, a reset may be required.
  2. App Integration: Download the "BroadLink" app from the App Store or Google Play. Create an account and follow the in-app wizard to set up your home.
  3. Smart Configuration: When the device is in smart configuration mode (indicated by a quickly flashing LED), use the app to add the device. You will name it and assign it to a specific room in your home.
  4. AP Configuration (if needed): If you encounter difficulties with smart configuration, the app will provide "Indications to try AP configuration." This alternative method ensures connectivity even in challenging network environments.

Adding Virtual Remotes:

  1. Select "Add remote": Once the RM pro+ is added to your app, navigate to the device page and tap "Add remote."
  2. Follow the Wizard: The app will guide you through the process of adding a virtual remote for your specific IR or RF device. This typically involves selecting the device type and then learning the signals from your original remote.

Learning Buttons:

  1. Access "Learn buttons": If any button on your newly created virtual remote is not functional, go to the menu in the remote panel within the app and select "Learn buttons."
  2. Tap and Learn: Tap the specific button in the app that you want to learn. The RM pro+ will then prompt you to point your original remote at the RM pro+ and press the corresponding button. The learning process continues until the button is successfully tested and working.

Remote Control: Once virtual remotes are set up, you can control your devices from anywhere using the BroadLink app. This includes turning devices on/off, adjusting settings (e.g., temperature for AC, volume for TV), and executing custom scenes or routines that combine multiple actions.

Network Requirements: It's crucial to ensure your phone is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network during the device addition process, as 5GHz networks are not supported by the RM pro+. Additionally, the Wi-Fi password should be no more than 32 characters long and should not contain special characters that are unavailable on a standard keyboard layout, to ensure compatibility.

Maintenance Features

The BroadLink RM pro+ is designed for minimal maintenance, primarily focusing on ensuring proper connectivity and functionality through simple reset procedures.

Reset for Smart Configuration: If the device is not responding or you need to reconfigure it for smart mode, you can perform a reset.

  1. Locate Reset Button: The reset button is typically a small, recessed button on the device.
  2. Press and Hold: Use a needle or a similar pointed object to press and hold the reset (on/off) button for approximately 6 seconds.
  3. LED Indication: Continue holding until the LED on the device flashes quickly. This indicates that the device has entered smart configuration mode and is ready to be added via the app.

Reset for AP Configuration: In situations where smart configuration is not successful, you can force the device into AP configuration mode.

  1. Start from Smart Configuration: First, ensure the device is in smart configuration mode (LED flashing quickly).
  2. Press and Hold Again: While the LED is flashing quickly, press and hold the reset (on/off) button again with a needle for another 6 seconds.
  3. LED Indication: The LED will then flash quickly and off alternatively, signifying that the device has entered AP configuration mode. This mode provides an alternative method for connecting the device to your Wi-Fi network, often useful in environments with specific network configurations.

Status Indications: The device provides clear LED indications to communicate its current status, which is helpful for troubleshooting:

  • Flashes quickly (2-3 times / sec): Device is in smart configuration mode, waiting to be added.
  • Flashes quickly and off alternatively: Device is in AP configuration mode, waiting to be added.
  • Flashes from quickly to slowly then off: Device is being configured and then added to the network.
  • Flashes slowly (once / sec): Device has failed to connect to the network.
  • Flash once: An IR or RF signal has been sent.

These status indicators allow users to quickly diagnose connection issues or confirm successful signal transmission without needing complex tools or extensive technical knowledge. The robust design and simple reset options ensure that the BroadLink RM pro+ remains a reliable and easy-to-manage component of your smart home system.
