SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service, maintenance,
or use can cause explosion, fire, electrical shock, or other
conditions which may cause death, personal injury, or property
damage. Consult a qualified installer, service agency, or your
distributor or branch for information or assistance. The qualified
installer or agency muse use factory--authorized kits or accessories
when modifying this product. Refer to the individual instructions
packaged with the kits or accessories when installing.
Follow all safety codes. Wear safety glasses, protective clothing,
and work gloves. Have a fire extinguisher available. Read these
instructions thoroughly and follow all warnings or cautions
included in literature and attached to the unit. Consult local
building codes and the current editions of the National Electrical
Code (NEC) NFPA 70.
In Canada, refer to the current editions of the Canadian Electrical
Code CSA C22.1.
Recognize safety information. This is the safety--alert symbol
.
When you see this symbol on the unit and in the instructions or
manuals, be alert to the potential for personal injury.
Understand the signal words DANGER, WARNING,and
CAUTION. These words are used with the safety--alert symbol.
DANGER identifies the most serious hazards which will result in
severe personal injury or death. WARNING signifies a hazard
which could result in personal injury or death. CAUTION is used
to identify unsafe practices which may result in minor personal
injury or product and property damage. NOTE is used to highlight
suggestions which will result in enhanced installation, reliability, or
operation.
INTRODUCTION
There are two Legacy Line--RNC Series programmable thermostat
models, one for AC applications and one for HP applications. Both
are dual powered, operating from either 24VAC or two alkaline
AA batteries. Configuration and program schedules are stored in
non--volatile memory, preserving this information during power
loss and battery removal. Features include simplified 5/2
programming, large backlit display, and modern styling.
The AC model provides one stage of heating and one stage of
cooling.
The HP model provides two stages of heating and one stage of
cooling.
INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
AC Operation
For 24VAC operation, both the R and C wires must be connected
to the 24VAC power source. Batteries are not needed.
Battery Operation
When batteries are used, the common (C) connection is not needed,
saving a wire, and eliminating 24VAC operation. The thermostat
continues to operate in the event of a power failure. Battery life is
expected to be one year. A “low battery” reminder tells the
homeowner when it is time to replace the batteries. When
connected without the common wire, the thermostat will not
operate without batteries. Continuous back--lighting is not
available.
Both Battery and AC Operation
If both batteries and 24VAC operation are used (batteries installed
and the common wire connected), and indefinite clock operation
are provided, the battery will be used only during AC power loss,
extending battery life to nearly its shelf life.
A jumper has to be properly set for backlight operation. J2 should
be set in the “AC position when the thermostat is operated from
24VAC. J2 should be set in the BAT” position when the
thermostat is operated from batteries. The thermostat will continue

Overview

The Bryant Legacy Line-RNC Series Programmable Thermostat is a dual-powered device designed for residential heating and cooling applications. It comes in two models: one for AC (air conditioner) applications and another for HP (heat pump) applications. Both models can operate from either a 24VAC power source or two alkaline AA batteries. Configuration and program schedules are stored in non-volatile memory, ensuring that this information is preserved even during power loss or battery removal.

Function Description:

The thermostat's primary function is to control residential heating and cooling systems. The AC model provides one stage of heating and one stage of cooling, while the HP model offers two stages of heating and two stages of cooling. It features simplified 5/2 programming, allowing users to set four distinct periods per day (MORNING, DAY, EVE, NIGHT) and two schedules per week (weekdays and weekends). Each period can have separate time, heat setpoint, and cool setpoint settings.

The thermostat supports both manual and programmed operation. In manual mode, users can select the operating mode (OFF, HEAT, COOL, or EMHT for heat pump models), fan operation (continuous or auto), read the room temperature, and adjust the setpoint. In programmed mode, the thermostat follows a pre-set comfort schedule, automatically adjusting temperatures based on the time of day and day of the week.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: Dual powered, 24VAC or two alkaline AA batteries.
  • Memory: Non-volatile memory for configuration and program schedules.
  • Display: Large backlit LCD display.
  • AC Model: 1-stage heat/1-stage cool.
  • HP Model: 2-stage heat/2-stage cool.
  • Temperature Display Units: Fahrenheit (°F) or Centigrade (°C), configurable.
  • Setpoint Range: Configurable minimum cooling setpoint (50° to 90°F / 10° to 32°C) and maximum heating setpoint (50° to 90°F / 10° to 32°C).
  • Timeguard Timer: A 5-minute timeguard is built-in for compressor operation, preventing short cycling. This is eliminated in PTAC operation mode.
  • Cycle Timer: Limits equipment cycles to no more than 4 per hour (or 1 cycle every 15 minutes) for both Y and W outputs.
  • Minimum On Timer: Equipment remains on for a minimum of 3 minutes, regardless of demand, unless a setpoint or mode change occurs.
  • Staging Timer (HP models): A 15-minute delay between the first and second stages of heat. If heating demand is greater than 5°F/3°C, the delay is reduced to 30 seconds.
  • Keypad Lockout: Configurable feature to lock the keypad, preventing unauthorized changes.

Usage Features:

  • Simplified Programming: The 5/2 programming allows for distinct weekday and weekend schedules with four daily periods.
  • User Interface: Features UP/DOWN arrows for temperature adjustment, H/C button for mode selection, FAN button for fan control, PROGRAM button for scheduling, TIME/TEMP button for time and temperature settings, and DAY button for day selection.
  • Backlighting: The display backlight illuminates for 10 seconds after any button press. Continuous backlighting is available when operating on 24VAC with the J2 jumper set to "AC."
  • Battery Indicator: An icon on the display indicates battery status (full, half, low/empty).
  • Configuration Options: Installers can configure various settings, including equipment type (AC, HP, PTAC), temperature units, fan operation with W output, reversing valve type, room air temperature offset, keypad lockout, and min/max setpoints.
  • Temporary Override: Allows users to temporarily change the setpoint, with the programmed schedule resuming at the next scheduled time.
  • Manual Operation (HOLD): The HOLD/END button enables continuous manual operation, ignoring the programmed schedule indefinitely.
  • Error Messages: Displays "E4" for internal non-volatile memory failure and "--" for room temperature sensor failure, turning off all outputs in both cases.
  • Auxiliary Heat Indicator (HP models): Displays "AUX HEAT" when auxiliary heat is active, indicating the system is using electric heaters for additional warmth.
  • Emergency Heat (HP models): Allows manual activation of emergency heat ("EMHT" display) if the heat pump is not working properly.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: Designed for easy battery replacement without removing the thermostat from the wall. Two AA alkaline batteries are located in a compartment under the lid on top of the thermostat.
  • Non-Volatile Memory: Preserves settings during power outages and battery changes, reducing the need for reprogramming after power interruptions.
  • Troubleshooting Indicators: Error messages and auxiliary heat indicators help diagnose system issues.
  • Installation Considerations: Detailed instructions for optimal thermostat placement, avoiding direct sunlight, drafts, and areas with poor air circulation. Proper wire connection and sealing of wall holes are emphasized to prevent air leaks that could affect temperature sensing.
  • Environmental Hazard Warning: Mercury disposal caution for older thermostats being replaced.
  • Safety Considerations: Emphasizes turning off all power before installation, following safety codes, and consulting qualified installers for service or modifications. Warnings for electrical operation hazard and environmental hazard are provided.
