Overview

The AX27 Clamshell Tent is a high-quality rooftop tent designed for 4WD accessories and outdoor gear enthusiasts. It is engineered to provide a practical, reliable, and comfortable camping experience, reflecting The Bush Company's commitment to quality manufacturing.

Function Description

The AX27 Clamshell Tent serves as a robust and easily deployable shelter for outdoor adventures. It is designed to be mounted on a vehicle's roof rack or load bars, offering an elevated sleeping platform that keeps users off the ground. The tent features a clamshell design, allowing for quick setup and pack-down, making it ideal for overlanding and touring. Its primary function is to provide a secure and comfortable sleeping environment, complete with integrated electrical features for convenience.

Usage Features

The AX27 Clamshell Tent comes with a comprehensive set of features designed to enhance its usability and comfort.

Installation and Mounting: The tent's installation process is detailed, ensuring proper and safe attachment to a vehicle. It includes two full-length foot extrusion rails on the underside for securing the tent to a chosen platform or load bars. The Universal Fitment Bracket Set, comprising 6 L-Brackets and 6 heavy-duty plates, offers versatile mounting options. These brackets can be mounted on either the inside (Option 1) or outside (Option 2) edges of the mounting rails. For specific setups, mounting bolts can also be inserted directly into the central channel of the tent foot extrusions (Option 3). It is crucial to use anti-seize grease on the stainless steel nuts and bolts to prevent seizing and to avoid power tools when tightening to prevent over-tightening.

Gas Strut System: The tent incorporates K4153 Gas Lifting Struts for effortless opening and closing. The installation of these struts involves several steps:

  1. Preparation: Open the tent, remove the gas struts, ladder, and spring rods, then close the tent.
  2. Strut Disassembly: Identify the top of the gas strut, remove the spring from the ball and socket end points, and detach the ball joints from both ends of the gas struts.
  3. Top Shell Attachment: Apply the following steps to both sides of the tent. Remove the black button head screw from the gas strut bracket on the top shell. Remove the existing washer and place it over the top part of the gas strut's thread. Screw the top part of the gas strut into the nut, held in place by the black button head screw, ensuring the ball joint is properly fastened.
  4. Bottom Shell Attachment: Open the top shell until the canvas reaches its maximum tension, using the provided telescopic pole to maintain the open position. With the gas strut hanging from the top shell, use a ratchet strap to compress the gas strut. This allows alignment of the thread on the bottom of the strut with the relevant nut position on the bottom shell. Repeat this fastening process for the bottom shell.
  5. Security: Secure all 4 ball joints on the gas struts using the spring locking pins.

Electrical Package: The AX27 is equipped with an integrated electrical package for enhanced convenience:

  • Internal LED Light: A rechargeable Tri-Colour LED light with a USB charging cable is included, featuring Velcro attachments for easy positioning on the inside roof of the tent.
  • Power Outlets: Two sets of 12V CIG and USB outlets are connected to the internal electrical circuit.
  • Resettable Fuse: A 20amp resettable fuse protects the electrical outlet system, with its switch located on the rear of one of the power outlets.
  • External Power Connection: An Anderson plug power connection point is located under the front left-hand side of the tent. For permanent connections, a 20amp in-line fuse and appropriately thick electrical cable (to safely handle 25amp over the required distance) must be used.

Comfort and Accessories: The tent comes with several items to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • Carpet Underlay: Provides insulation and comfort under the mattress.
  • Mattress: A mattress with a canvas cover is included for sleeping comfort.
  • Ladder: A ladder with a canvas bag is provided for easy access to the tent. One ladder mounting bracket is pre-mounted to the rear of the tent, with an additional bracket inside the ladder bag.
  • Roof Organizers: Two roof organizers, each with three pockets, are designed for internal storage.
  • Spring Rods: Large and small spring rods are included, likely for supporting awnings or window covers.
  • Telescopic Pole: Used to maintain the tent's open position during gas strut installation and potentially for other support functions.

Positioning Guidelines: Proper positioning of the tent on the vehicle is crucial for safety and warranty validity:

  • Unsupported Overhang: A maximum unsupported overhang of 500mm is allowed at the front and rear of the tent. Exceeding this limit will void the warranty.
  • Load Bar Spacing: If only two load bars are used, they must be no more than 1250mm apart (centre to centre).
  • Third Support: If the maximum distance between the front and rear support underneath the tent exceeds 1250mm, a third support must be used, with a minimum distance of 500mm from the front and rear supports.
  • Vehicle Flex: On ute/pickup vehicles, the tent must not be fixed across both the cab and the tray/canopy due to potential flex differences, which could damage the tent and vehicle.

Maintenance Features

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the AX27 Clamshell Tent, specific care and maintenance procedures are recommended.

Canvas Care:

  • Pre-use Wetting: New tents should be thoroughly wet down on the outside before first use. This allows the poly/cotton corespun thread and canvas to swell, sealing any potential leaks in the stitching and ensuring good performance in wet weather.
  • Cleaning:
    • Do not use soap or detergents on the canvas.
    • Do not store the product if wet; always allow it to dry first.
    • To clean, use a soft brush and cold water.
    • Avoid exposing the canvas to petrol, oils, or harsh chemicals.
  • Mould Cleaning: The canvas is infused with anti-mould and mildew elements. If mould appears:
    • Allow the mould to dry.
    • Remove surface mould with a stiff bristle brush.
    • Vacuum the affected area.
    • Treat the area with Oil of Clove spray (either a purchased diluted spray or a few drops of oil mixed with water in a spray bottle).

Condensation Management: Condensation is a natural occurrence, especially in cold weather or when multiple people are in the tent. To reduce build-up:

  • Ventilation: Keep some windows open on cold nights to enable airflow.
  • Rear Vent: If the tent has a vent above the rear entrance, keep it open.
  • Moisture Absorbers: Use moisture-absorbing silica gel pouches inside the tent when traveling and storing it. These pouches can be reused by drying them in the sun or an oven.

Mattress Care:

  • Ventilation: The mattress absorbs moisture from body sweat. During extended trips, it is advisable to move bedding away from the mattress daily to allow it to breathe.
  • Long-term Storage: If the tent is not used for more than 10 days, open it regularly to air it out. Consider removing the mattress and storing it separately until the next trip.

General Maintenance:

  • Warranty: In case of an issue, contact the stockist or Bush Company outlet where the tent was purchased to initiate the warranty process. For Australian customers, a warranty support ticket can be raised via The Bush Company Australia website. Full warranty details are available on the product page of The Bush Company website.
