Do you have a question about the CAMAG TLC SPRAY CABINET 2 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The CAMAG TLC Spray Cabinet 2 is a laboratory instrument designed to enhance safety and efficiency when working with thin-layer chromatograms. Its primary function is to remove excess spray mist and protect laboratory personnel from solvent vapors and potentially poisonous or irritating sprays during the application of reagents to TLC plates. This contributes significantly to a safer laboratory environment.

The cabinet is also highly effective for drying freshly developed TLC plates, whether or not the drying process is accelerated with a hair dryer. This versatility makes it a valuable tool for various stages of TLC analysis.

Usage Features:

The instrument's design prioritizes ease of use and optimal plate positioning. It consists of a housing with an integrated radial fan, a tray, and a perforated plate support.

To set up the instrument for use:

  1. Place the housing on a suitable surface with its opening facing you. Ensure that a fume hood and power supply are within reach of the waste air hose and power cable.
  2. Slide the waste air hose over the connecting sleeve and secure it with a clamp. Connect the other end of the hose to an exhaust hood. It's crucial to avoid sharply bending the hose, as this could impair suction efficiency.
  3. Verify that the marked instrument voltage matches your local mains voltage. Then, connect the spray cabinet to your power supply using the provided cable.
  4. Slide the PVC tray (4) partway into the bottom of the housing.
  5. Position the perforated PVC plate support (5) between the three rests of the tray, tilting it slightly backward to engage its self-locking mechanism.
  6. Insert three PVC pins (6) into the holes of the plate support, adjusting their positions to suit the size and orientation of your TLC plate for optimal spraying.
  7. Place your TLC plate onto the pins.
  8. Slide the tray fully into the housing.
  9. Switch on the fan using the switch located on the side of the housing. A gentle sucking noise indicates that the fan is operating, and a green pilot lamp will illuminate as long as the fan is blowing. The TLC Spray Cabinet 2 is now ready for use.

When spraying a TLC plate, follow the instructions provided with your specific sprayer or rely on your own experience. After completing the spraying process, it is important to allow the fan to run for an additional 10 minutes, especially when corrosive reagents have been used, to ensure thorough removal of residual vapors.

The instrument is designed for indoor use only and complies with safety class 1. It is crucial to use adequate safety equipment, such as protective goggles and gloves, when operating the instrument to prevent injury. The instrument should only be used by properly trained laboratory staff and is not suitable for use in environments with a risk of explosions.

Maintenance Features:

The CAMAG TLC Spray Cabinet 2 is designed for easy cleaning, which significantly extends its working life. Regular cleaning is recommended.

For cleaning:

  1. Always disconnect the power supply before cleaning the instrument.
  2. The housing and fan lining are designed to allow any accumulating liquid to drain into the tray. Therefore, the tray should always be cleaned after each spraying session.
  3. Periodically clean the interior of the housing, the plate support, the pins, and, if necessary, the fan (after removing the waste air hose).
  4. Use regular laboratory cleaning agents and follow their recommended procedures.
  5. For cleaning the instrument's surface, use a damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid using aggressive detergents.

No special maintenance procedures are required for the instrument itself. However, if the fan motor becomes defective, it must be replaced by a service technician. Only authorized personnel should open the instrument, and service or repair should only be performed by trained specialists using spare parts and consumables supplied by CAMAG. Using parts from other sources will void the warranty. Before any service, consult the service manual to mitigate product-specific risks. The power cord must be removed before opening the instrument, and it is strictly forbidden to work on an opened instrument that is connected to the power supply. Only the original power cord supplied with the instrument should be used.

In the event that liquids penetrate the instrument's interior, the power must be disconnected immediately. Small amounts of liquid can be wiped off or dried with a hair dryer. For larger amounts of liquid, a service technician must be called, and a functionality test must be performed in all cases.

If the instrument requires decontamination, follow the relevant safety regulations and guidelines.

The instrument is marked with a symbol indicating that it must not be disposed of as unsorted municipal waste. Instead, it should be collected separately as electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE-Directive 2002/96/EC). To ensure proper recycling, the equipment or its parts should be returned to the distributor, producer, or an adequate collection system at the end of its life cycle. This measure helps to mitigate potential negative effects on the environment and human health.
