Overview

This document provides comprehensive troubleshooting and installation instructions for Canon recycled ink cartridges across various Canon PIXMA printer series, including IP, MP, MX, BJC, S, and i series models. It focuses specifically on addressing common issues that arise when using remanufactured cartridges, particularly the deactivation of the ink level detection function, which is crucial for these cartridges to operate correctly.

Function Description:

The primary function of this guide is to enable users of Canon PIXMA, BJC, S, and i series printers to successfully install and operate recycled or remanufactured ink cartridges. It details the steps required to bypass the printer's native ink level detection system, which often flags recycled cartridges as "low ink" or "unrecognized" even when full. By deactivating this function, users can continue printing without interruption and fully utilize the ink in their recycled cartridges. The guide also provides instructions for basic maintenance tasks like nozzle checks and cartridge alignment, ensuring optimal print quality even with recycled cartridges.

Important Technical Specifications (Cartridge Compatibility):

The document lists specific Canon ink cartridge series and their compatible printer models.

Usage Features:

The document outlines several key usage features for recycled cartridges:

  • Bypassing Ink Level Detection: The core feature is the ability to bypass the printer's built-in ink level detection system. This is critical because recycled cartridges often have chips that report incorrect ink levels or are not recognized by the printer's software. The guide provides specific button press sequences (e.g., holding RESUME/CANCEL, START, or STOP/RESET buttons) to achieve this bypass, allowing the printer to continue operating despite "low ink" warnings.
  • Continued Printing: Once the ink level detection is deactivated, users can continue printing until the cartridge is genuinely empty, maximizing the lifespan and value of recycled cartridges.
  • Error Message Interpretation: The guide helps users interpret common error messages, such as "The ink cartridge has been installed or replaced" or "The following may have run out of color," and provides the correct actions to take.
  • Fax Document Handling (for MX Series): For Canon Pixma MX Series printers, the guide explains how to receive and print fax documents even when the ink level detection is deactivated. It details accessing the MEMORY REFERENCE menu to adjust settings like "Auto Print RX" and "Print When No Ink" to ON.
  • One-Time Deactivation: For many models, the deactivation process is a one-time action per recycled cartridge, meaning users don't have to repeat the bypass steps every time they print.

Maintenance Features:

The document also includes instructions for basic maintenance to ensure good print quality:

  • Nozzle Check: Users are guided on how to perform a "Nozzle check" to verify the print head's condition and identify any clogs or issues that might affect print quality. This involves navigating through the printer's software menu: "File" -> "Print" -> "Property" -> "Maintenance" -> "Nozzle check."
  • Cartridge Alignment: Instructions for "Cartridge Alignment" are provided to ensure that the print head is correctly aligned, preventing misaligned lines or blurry prints. This is accessed via "File" -> "Print" -> "Property" -> "Maintenance" -> "Cartridge Alignment."
  • Troubleshooting "Cartridge Not Recognized" (MX870): For the Canon MX870 printer experiencing "cartridge is not recognized" messages with PGI-220/CLI-221 cartridges, the solution involves turning the printer off and on again or reinstalling the cartridge. This suggests a potential temporary communication glitch rather than a permanent incompatibility.
  • Addressing Blinking Orange Light: The guide explains that a blinking orange light (4 times) indicates a "Low Ink Warning / Ink Runs Out" condition, which is expected when using recycled cartridges with deactivated ink detection.

In summary, this manual serves as an essential resource for users of Canon printers who opt for recycled ink cartridges. It empowers them to overcome common technical hurdles related to ink level detection, ensuring a smooth printing experience and extending the utility of their cartridges while maintaining acceptable print quality through basic maintenance procedures.
