Overview

This document is the Owner's Manual for the Carrier 40MFC/38MFC and 40MFQ/38MFQ High-Wall Ductless Split System, covering sizes 009 to 022. It provides essential information for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the appliance.

Function Description:

The Carrier high-wall fan coil unit is designed to provide quiet, maximum comfort in indoor spaces. When matched with an outdoor condensing unit, it offers cooling and/or heating, filters, and dehumidifies the room air. The system can be operated via a remote control or, if the remote is unavailable, through a "Manual" button on the unit itself, defaulting to "Auto" mode.

Operating Modes:

The high-wall fan coil unit features five distinct operating modes:

  • Fan Only: In this mode, the system circulates and filters room air without altering the room temperature.
  • Auto: The system automatically cools or heats the room to maintain a user-selected set point.
  • Heating (Heat Pump Models Only): This mode heats and filters room air.
  • Cooling: The system cools, dries, and filters room air.
  • Dehumidification (DRY): This mode prioritizes air dehumidification, slightly cooling the room temperature. It is important to note that this mode is not a substitute for a dedicated dehumidifier.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Temperature Set Point Range: The temperature can be set between 62°F (17°C) and 86°F (30°C), adjustable in increments of 1°F or 1°C.
  • Remote Control Range: The remote control can operate the unit from a distance of up to 25 ft (7.6 m) without obstructions.
  • Remote Control Batteries: Requires two AAA 1.5V alkaline batteries.
  • Manual Operation Preset: When operated manually, the preset set point is 76°F (24°C), fan speed is AUTO, and discharge air direction is pre-set based on "Cool" or "Heat" mode.
  • Compressor Cycling Protection: After stopping, the compressor will not restart for 3 to 4 minutes to prevent frequent cycling.
  • Sleep Mode Temperature Adjustment: In Cool mode, the set point is raised by 1.8°F (1°C) after 1 hour, and by another 1.8°F (1°C) after a second hour, with the fan running at low speed. In Heat mode, the set points are lowered by 1.8°F (1°C) similarly.
  • Sleep Mode Duration: The unit shuts off 5 hours after activating Sleep mode.
  • Turbo Mode Duration: Turbo mode automatically terminates after 20 minutes.
  • Freeze Protection Mode (F.P.): When activated (for heat pumps in heating mode), the indoor unit displays "FP", operates at high fan speed, and the coil temperature is automatically set to 46°F (8°C).
  • Front Panel Cleaning Temperature Limit: Do not use water hotter than 105°F (40.6°C) when cleaning the front panel.

Usage Features:

  • Remote Control: The primary interface for setting up and operating the system. It features a window display panel showing current system status and can be mounted using a provided bracket.
  • On/Off Button: Starts or stops the unit. If pressed too soon after a stop, the compressor will delay restarting.
  • Mode Button: Allows selection between Auto, Cool, Dry, Heat (heat pump models only), and Fan Only modes.
  • Temperature Adjustment Buttons (Increase/Decrease): Used to set the desired room temperature.
  • Fan Button: Selects the desired fan speed (Low, Med, High). Fan speed is automatically set in DRY or AUTO modes.
  • Horizontal Swing Button: Adjusts the horizontal louver position. A single press moves the louver by 6 degrees; pressing for two or more seconds activates continuous auto-swing.
  • Vertical Louver Adjustment: Vertical louvers are adjusted manually.
  • Timer Function (TIMER ON/OFF): Allows programming the unit to automatically start (TIMER ON) or stop (TIMER OFF) at specified times, or both. Settings can be adjusted in 30-minute increments up to 10 hours, then 60-minute increments up to 24 hours.
  • Sleep Mode: An energy-saving feature available in COOL, HEAT, or AUTO modes, which gradually adjusts the set point and fan speed over time before shutting off.
  • Turbo Mode: Rapidly cools or heats the room by running the fan at super high speed.
  • Self Clean Mode: Activates a self-cleaning function for the evaporator, which automatically cleans and dries it.
  • Follow Me Mode: When activated, the remote control's displayed temperature reflects the actual temperature at its location, sending this signal to the unit every 3 minutes. Not available in DRY and FAN modes.
  • LED Button: Turns the display light on and off.
  • F.P. Button (Freeze Protection): Activates or deactivates the freeze protection mode (heating mode for heat pumps only).
  • Auto Start: In case of power failure, the unit stores its operating conditions and automatically resumes operation under those conditions when power is restored.
  • Auto Defrost Operation: In heating mode, if the outdoor coil frosts, the indoor and outdoor fans turn off while the system removes frost, then automatically reverts to normal operation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Periodic Maintenance: Recommended to ensure proper operation. Intervals may vary based on the installation environment.
  • Air Filter Cleaning: Filters should be removed and cleaned once a month. They can be vacuumed, washed with warm water, and thoroughly dried. Replace if excessively worn or torn.
  • Coil Cleaning: Clean the coil at the beginning of each cooling season or as needed, using a vacuum cleaner or a long-bristle brush. Caution: Coil fins are sharp; wear safety protection.
  • Indoor Unit Front Panel Cleaning: Wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive or petroleum-based cleaners.
  • Extended Shutdown Preparation: Clean and reposition filters, operate the unit in Fan Only mode for 12 hours to dry internal parts, turn off main power, and remove remote control batteries.
  • Remote Control Battery Replacement: Replace both batteries at the same time. Remove batteries if the remote control will not be used for several weeks to prevent leakage.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A table is provided to help diagnose and resolve common issues before contacting a service dealer.

Safety Precautions:

  • DANGER: Identifies hazards that will result in severe personal injury or death.
  • WARNING: Signifies hazards that could result in personal injury or death. Includes warnings against improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service, maintenance, or use, which can cause explosion, fire, electrical shock, or other conditions. Emphasizes consulting qualified installers/service agencies and using factory-authorized kits/accessories.
  • CAUTION: Identifies unsafe practices that could result in minor personal injury or product/property damage. Includes warnings about handling the remote control with care, avoiding getting it wet, and the risk of equipment damage from dirty air filters or improper cleaning methods.
  • Electrical Shock Hazard: Always turn off power to the system before cleaning or maintenance.
  • Cut Hazard: Coil fins are sharp; wear safety protection when cleaning.
