ABOUT YOUR HEAT PUMP SYSTEM
Our products are designed, tested and built in accordance with US
Department of Energy standardized procedures and other standards;
however, actual operating results and efficiencies may vary based on
manufacturing and supplier tolerances, equipment configuration,
operating conditions and installation practices.
IDENTIFYING YOUR SYSTEM
Your new Carrier heat pump system is what we call a ”split system.” It
has an outdoor unit and an indoor unit connected to each other with
copper tubing called refrigerant lines. Each of these units has a rating
plate with the model and serial numbers you will need to reference when
calling an authorized Carrier dealer about your system.
Take a few moments now to locate those numbers and record them for
future reference.
USING YOUR NEW CARRIER SYSTEM
Your Carrier heat pump system is controlled by a wall-mounted Infinity
Control installed inside your home. This system requires an Infinity
Control which has software designed specifically to operate this system.
See the Infinity Control Homeowner Guide for more details on system
operation.
VARIABLE SPEED OPERATION
You may notice your system runs for longer periods of time. This
system is designed to meet cooling or heating needs of the home at a
wide range of conditions. Your indoor temperature will remain more
consistent with fewer drafts, better humidity control, enhanced comfort
and enhanced energy efficiency.
HEATING AND COOLING YOUR HOME
For heating or cooling operation, make sure the System or Mode control
is set to the appropriate mode. Then, adjust the Temperature control to
your desired setting. Finally, use the Fan control to select Automatic
(turns on and off as heating is needed) or On (runs continuously).
Depending on your typical heating needs, your home comfort system
may also include a supplementary heating source that will automatically
turn on as needed. You may also select this heat source manually if
desired.
OPERATION UNDER EXTREME CONDITIONS
Your heat pump will run as long as necessary to maintain the indoor
temperature selected on your Infinity Control. On extremely hot days,
your heat pump will run for longer periods at a time than on moderate
days. Your system will also run for longer periods of time under the
following conditions:
Frequent opening of exterior doors
Operating laundry appliances
Taking hot showers
More than the usual number of people present in the home
More than the normal number of electric lights in use
Drapes or blinds are open on the sunny side of the home
IMPORTANT HEAT PUMP FACTS
Heat pump systems have a few unique features and operations that you
should be aware of:
During the heating cycle, your heat pump delivers a constant flow of
air at around 95°F (35°C)to about 105°F (41°C), compared to sudden
blasts of hot air provided by a typical furnace.
Ice or frost may form on the outdoor coil during winter heating
operation. Your heat pump will automatically melt the ice using its
defrost cycle. During defrost, you may see steam or fog rising from
the outdoor unit, which is normal. At the beginning and end of the
defrost cycle, you may hear a ”whoosh” sound coming from the unit.
This is normal for heat pump applications.
Heat pumps installed in areas expecting snow are elevated with
support feet.
SOUND
Your new heat pump with Greenspeed Intelligence is different from most
heating and cooling systems. Because this is a variable speed system, it
is designed to operate at different speeds depending on the temperature
and humidity conditions. You may notice the sound coming from the
outdoor unit changing from time to time, and from season to season. In
winter, the system will operate at higher speeds as it gets colder outside
to maintain its heating performance. The higher speed produces a higher
sound. This change of speeds allows the system to operate more
efficiently and maintain comfortable conditions inside the home. You
may also hear a slight “purr” at start-up and shut down. These sounds
are normal and do not represent a problem with your system.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
Simple, routine maintenance as described below will enhance your heat
pump system’s ability to operate economically and dependably. Always
remember the following safety precautions:

Overview

The device described in this manual is the 25VNA4 Infinity™ Variable Speed Heat Pump with Greenspeed™ Intelligence, designed for 2-5 nominal tons. This is a "split system" heat pump, meaning it consists of an outdoor unit and an indoor unit connected by copper refrigerant lines. It is controlled by a wall-mounted Infinity Control, which requires specific software to operate this system effectively.

Function Description:

The primary function of this heat pump system is to provide both heating and cooling for your home. Unlike traditional systems, this is a variable speed heat pump, which means it can adjust its operation to meet the precise heating or cooling needs of the home across a wide range of conditions. This variable speed capability allows the system to run for longer periods at lower speeds, leading to more consistent indoor temperatures, fewer drafts, improved humidity control, enhanced comfort, and greater energy efficiency.

For heating or cooling operation, users select the appropriate mode (Heat or Cool) on the Infinity Control and set their desired temperature. The fan can be set to "Automatic" (turning on and off as needed for heating/cooling) or "On" (running continuously). Depending on heating needs, the system may also include a supplementary heating source that activates automatically or can be manually selected.

Usage Features:

  • Variable Speed Operation: A key feature is its variable speed operation. Users may notice the system runs for longer periods compared to conventional systems. This is by design to maintain consistent indoor temperatures, reduce drafts, and improve humidity control. The sound from the outdoor unit may also change from time to time and season to season, becoming louder at higher speeds when more heating performance is required in colder weather. A slight "purr" may also be heard at start-up and shut-down, which is normal.
  • Operation Under Extreme Conditions: The heat pump will operate as long as necessary to maintain the selected indoor temperature. During extremely hot days, it may run for longer periods. Factors that can influence runtime include frequent opening of exterior doors, operation of laundry appliances, taking hot showers, a higher-than-usual number of people in the home, increased use of electric lights, and open drapes or blinds on the sunny side of the home.
  • Heating Cycle Characteristics: During heating, the heat pump delivers a constant flow of air at around 95°F (35°C) to 105°F (41°C), which is a gentler warmth compared to the sudden blasts of hot air from a typical furnace.
  • Defrost Cycle: Ice or frost may form on the outdoor coil during winter heating. The system automatically melts this ice using its defrost cycle. During defrost, it's normal to see steam or fog rising from the outdoor unit and hear a "whoosh" sound at the beginning and end of the cycle.
  • Low Ambient Cooling Mode: If outdoor temperatures are below 55°F (13°C) and cooling is desired, users must enable "Low Ambient Cooling Mode" on the system control. In this mode, compressor speed range is restricted, and the outdoor fan may cycle to maintain proper operating pressures.
  • Bluetooth® Functionality: The product includes Bluetooth® functionality, allowing HVAC contractors to better service the unit. This enables them to pair with the unit, read diagnostic and other outdoor equipment information, and push software updates.

Maintenance Features:

Routine maintenance is crucial for economical and dependable operation.

  • Safety Precautions: Always disconnect all electrical power to the indoor air handler or furnace before performing any maintenance. Disconnect power to both indoor and outdoor units and use a suitable warning label. Be aware of sharp edges and wear appropriate protective clothing and gloves when handling parts.
  • Filter Maintenance: Keep the air filter on the indoor unit clean and properly installed. A clogged filter increases operating costs and shortens unit life. Refer to indoor unit literature for detailed cleaning information.
  • Unobstructed Airflow: Do not block floor, wall, or ceiling vents with drapes, furniture, toys, or other household items, as restricted airflow reduces efficiency and lifespan. The outdoor unit also requires unrestricted airflow; do not cover it, place items on or next to it, or allow debris (grass clippings, leaves) to accumulate on its sides or top. Maintain a minimum 12-inch (305 mm) clearance between the outdoor unit and tall grass, vines, or shrubs.
  • Condensate Drain Check: During the cooling season, the heat pump removes humidity, producing water that should trickle from the condensate drain of the indoor coil. Periodically check to ensure the drain system is not clogged. Drainage may be limited in very dry environments.
  • Base Pan Drainage: Periodically check for and remove debris around the base of the outdoor unit to ensure proper drainage and prevent standing water.
  • Level Installation: Ensure the outdoor unit remains level. If the support base settles or shifts, re-level it promptly to assure proper drainage and prevent water or ice collection beneath the unit.
  • Sea Coast Coil Maintenance: For units in coastal locations, additional maintenance is required due to corrosive ocean salt. Periodically wash all exposed surfaces and the outdoor coil (approximately every 3 months). Consult your Carrier dealer for proper cleaning intervals and procedures or consider a service contract.
  • Professional Dealer Maintenance: In addition to routine user maintenance, the home comfort system should be regularly inspected by a trained service technician. Many dealers offer service contracts, which may include benefits like parts discounts or no additional charge for "after hours" or emergency service.

Troubleshooting (Before Calling for Service):

  • Check indoor and outdoor disconnect switches, main electrical panel circuit breakers, or fuses.
  • Verify sufficient airflow: air filter(s) should be clean, and interior vents open and unobstructed.
  • Check Infinity Control settings: For cooling, desired temperature should be lower than displayed room temperature, and System/Mode set to Cool or Auto. For heating, temperature should be higher than displayed room temperature, and System/Mode set to Heat or Auto.
  • Be aware of time delays in unit operation, which are built-in protection features. These are normal and do not indicate a problem.

By understanding these features and following the recommended maintenance, users can ensure their 25VNA4 Infinity™ Variable Speed Heat Pump operates efficiently and reliably for years to come.
