ABOUT YOUR HEAT PUMP SYSTEM
Our products are designed, tested and built in accordance with US
Department of Energy standardized procedures and other standards;
however, actual operating results and efficiencies may vary based on
manufacturing and supplier tolerances, equipment configuration,
operating conditions and installation practices.
Identifying Your System
Your new Carrier heat pump system is what we call a ”split system.” It
has an outdoor unit and an indoor unit connected to each other with
copper tubing called refrigerant lines. Each of these units has a rating
plate with the model and serial numbers you will need to reference when
calling an authorized Carrier dealer about your system.
Take a few moments now to locate those numbers and record them in the
spaces provided on the cover of this booklet.
USING YOUR NEW CARRIER SYSTEM
Your Carrier heat pump system is controlled by a wall-mounted Infinity
Touch Control or thermostat installed inside your home. See the Infinity
Touch Control or thermostat Homeowner Guide for more details on
system operation.
VARIABLE SPEED OPERATION
You may notice your system runs for longer periods of time. This
system is designed to meet cooling or heating needs of the home at a
wide range of conditions. Your indoor temperature will remain more
consistent with fewer drafts, better humidity control, enhanced comfort
and enhanced energy efficiency.
HEATING AND COOLING YOUR HOME
For heating or cooling operation, make sure the System or Mode control
is set to the appropriate mode. Then, adjust the Temperature control to
your desired setting. Finally, use the Fan control to select Automatic
(turns on and off as heating is needed) or On (runs continuously).
Depending on your typical heating needs, your home comfort system
may also include a supplementary heating source that will automatically
turn on as needed. You may also select this heat source manually if
desired.
OPERATION UNDER EXTREME
CONDITIONS
Your heat pump will run as long as necessary to maintain the indoor
temperature selected on your Infinity Touch Control or thermostat. On
extremely hot days, your heat pump will run for longer periods at a time
than on moderate days. Your system will also run for longer periods of
time under the following conditions:
Frequent opening of exterior doors
Operating laundry appliances
Taking hot showers
More than the usual number of people present in the home
More than the normal number of electric lights in use
Drapes or blinds are open on the sunny side of the home
IMPORTANT HEAT PUMP FACTS
Heat pump systems have a few unique features and operations that you
should be aware of:
During the heating cycle, your heat pump delivers a constant flow of
air at around 95ºF (35ºC) to about 105ºF (41ºC), compared to sudden
blasts of hot air provided by a typical furnace.
Ice or frost may form on the outdoor coil during winter heating
operation. Your heat pump will automatically melt the ice using its
defrost cycle. During defrost, you may see steam or fog rising from
the outdoor unit, which is normal. At the beginning and end of the
defrost cycle, you may hear a ”whoosh” sound coming from the unit.
This is normal for heat pump applications.
Heat pumps installed in areas expecting snow are elevated with
support feet.
SOUND
Your Infinity 18VSheat pump is different from most heating and cooling
systems. Because this is a variable speed system, it is designed to operate
at different speeds depending on the temperature and humidity
conditions. You may notice the sound coming from the outdoor unit
changing from time to time, and from season to season. In winter, the
system will operate at higher speeds as it gets colder outside to maintain
its heating performance. The higher speed produces a higher sound. This
change of speed allows the system to operate more efficiently and
maintain comfortable conditions inside the home. You may also hear a
slight hissing sound when near the outdoor unit in the off-cycle. This is
the sound of system pressure equalization which is required to enable
soft and easy starting of the next cycle. These sounds are normal and do
not represent a problem with your system.

Overview

The 25VNA8 Infinity 18VS® Variable Speed Heat Pump with Puron® Refrigerant is a sophisticated home comfort system designed to provide efficient heating and cooling. This "split system" consists of an outdoor unit and an indoor unit connected by copper refrigerant lines. It is controlled by a wall-mounted Infinity Touch Control or thermostat, allowing users to set desired temperatures and modes (Cool, Heat, or Auto).

Function Description:

The primary function of this device is to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature by either heating or cooling the home. Unlike traditional systems, the 25VNA8 Infinity 18VS® is a variable speed heat pump, meaning it operates at different speeds depending on the temperature and humidity conditions. This variable speed operation contributes to more consistent indoor temperatures, reduced drafts, improved humidity control, enhanced comfort, and increased energy efficiency. During the heating cycle, the heat pump delivers a constant flow of air at approximately 95°F (35°C) to 105°F (41°C), which is a gentler heat compared to the sudden blasts from a typical furnace. The system can also include a supplementary heating source that automatically or manually activates as needed.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific technical specifications like BTU ratings or energy efficiency ratios (EER/SEER) are not detailed in the provided text, the manual highlights several operational parameters. The outdoor unit is designed to operate in cooling mode down to a minimum of 40°F (4°C) with an Infinity Touch Control or 55°F (13°C) with a thermostat. It is not designed to operate in heating mode when outdoor temperatures are higher than 66°F (19°C), though emergency or auxiliary heat can be used above this temperature. For extreme cold, the unit control may automatically shut off the heat pump and energize auxiliary heat when the outdoor temperature drops below 10°F (-12°C) to maintain the desired indoor temperature. The system uses Puron® Refrigerant.

Usage Features:

The 25VNA8 Infinity 18VS® offers several user-friendly features. Users can select between Automatic fan operation (turns on and off as heating/cooling is needed) or On (runs continuously). The variable speed operation results in longer run times compared to traditional systems, which helps in maintaining consistent temperatures and better humidity control. Under extreme conditions, such as very hot days, frequent door openings, use of laundry appliances, hot showers, more people in the home, or open drapes on the sunny side, the heat pump will run for longer periods. A unique feature of heat pumps is the defrost cycle, which automatically melts ice or frost that may form on the outdoor coil during winter heating. During defrost, users might observe steam or fog rising from the outdoor unit and hear a "whoosh" sound. The variable speed operation also means the sound from the outdoor unit may change with temperature and season, with higher speeds (and thus higher sound) in colder weather to maintain heating performance. A slight hissing sound near the outdoor unit in the off-cycle is normal, indicating system pressure equalization for soft and easy starting of the next cycle.

Maintenance Features:

Routine maintenance is crucial for the economical and dependable operation of the heat pump. Key maintenance tasks include:

  • Keep Filter Clean: A clogged or improperly installed air filter increases operating costs and shortens unit life.
  • Do Not Block Vents: Drapes, furniture, or other household items blocking floor, wall, or ceiling vents reduce system efficiency and lifespan.
  • Do Not Cover or Block Outdoor Unit: The outdoor unit requires unrestricted airflow. Users should avoid covering it, placing items on or next to it, or allowing grass clippings, leaves, or debris to accumulate. A minimum 12-inch (305 mm) clearance from tall grass, vines, or shrubs is recommended.
  • Check Condensate Drain: During cooling, the heat pump removes humidity, and water should trickle from the indoor coil's condensate drain. This drain system should be checked occasionally to ensure it's not clogged.
  • Base Pan Drainage: Periodically check for and remove debris around the base of the outdoor unit to ensure proper drainage and prevent standing water.
  • Level Installation: The outdoor unit should be level to ensure proper drainage. If the support base settles, it should be re-leveled.
  • Sea Coast Coil Maintenance: For units in coastal locations, additional maintenance is required due to corrosive airborne ocean salt. All exposed surfaces and the outdoor coil should be washed approximately every 3 months.

The manual also includes a detailed maintenance checklist, categorizing tasks as monthly or annual. Monthly tasks that can be performed by the consumer include clearing debris and vegetation near the unit, inspecting the cabinet for damage, inspecting the condenser coil and rinsing it with fresh water (more frequently near the sea coast), and checking base pan drainage. All other maintenance items and service work, such as inspecting electrical components, blower assembly, evaporator coil, condensate pan, and ductwork, must be performed by a qualified service technician. It is advised not to use harsh chemicals or high-pressure water on coils. Before any installation, modification, or servicing, the main electrical disconnect switch must be in the OFF position, and all warning labels should be read and followed.
