Basicinstructions–Biodieselfuel
IntroductiontoFattyAcidMethylEster(FAME)biodiesel
FAMEbiodiesel,calledbiodieselfuelinthefollowingsection,consistsofafamilyoffuelsderivedfromvegetableoils
treatedwithmethylesters.
Therearetwomainbiodieselfueltypes:RapeseedMethylEster(RME)andSoybeanMethylEster(SME).RMEisa
blendofrapeseedandsunowermethylester,andisthepreferredcropinEurope.SMEisthepreferredcropinthe
UnitedStates.
Biodieselfuelisarenewablealternativefuelsource.Itsuseanddevelopmentispromotedworldwide,especiallyin
EuropeandintheUnitedStates.
NOTICE:Youremissionscontrolsystemiscompatiblewithupto7%biodieselfuel(B7).Beawarethattheuse
ofbiodieselfuelthatdoesnotcomplywiththestandardsmentionedinthissectioncouldleadtoseveredamageto
theengine,fuelsystemoraftertreatmentsystemofyourmachine.Theuseofnon-approvedfuelsmayvoidCASE
CONSTRUCTIONWarrantycoverage.
BiodieselcanbeusedtorunTier4bdieselenginesonlywhenblendedwithstandarddieselfuel:
•
B7:indicatestheblendof7%biodieseland93%dieselfuels.
•
B20:indicatestheblendof20%biodieseland80%dieselfuels.Donotuse.
Biodieselfuelhasseveralpositivefeaturesincomparisonwithdieselfuel:
•
Biodieseladdslubricitytothefuel,whichisbenecialinmanycircumstances,particularlyassulfurandaromatics
areremovedfromthefuel.
•
Biodieselhasagreatercetanenumberandburnscleaner.
•
Biodieselproduceslessparticulatematterandreducessmokeemissions.
•
Biodieselisfullybiodegradableandnon-toxic.
Dieselandbiodieselfuelspecications
Tier4bdieselfuelspecicationsarecoveredbythefollowing:
•
EN590-SpecicationofDieselfuel.(10ppmsulfurmaximum.)
Biodieselblendsarecoveredby:
•
EuropeanDieselFuelSpecicationEN590allowsupto7%biodieselsince2009.Europeanfuelsuppliersare
allowedtouseupto7%biodieselfuel(B7)tosupplythenetwork.
Purebiodieselblendstock(B100)specicationiscoveredbythefollowingrequirements:
•
Europe:EN14214-Automotivefuels.FattyAcidMethylEster(FAME)fordieselengines.Requirementsandtest
methods.
•
DINV51606-Germanstandardforbiodiesel.
Beforerawoilcanbeconvertedintousablebiodieselfuel,itmustundergotransestericationtoremoveglycerides.
Duringthetransestericationprocess,theoilreactswithanalcoholtoseparatetheglycerinefromthefatorvegetable
oil.Thisprocessleavesbehindtwoproducts:methylester(thechemicalnameforbiodiesel)andglycerine(abyprod-
uctusuallysoldforuseinsoapsorotherproducts).
NOTICE:BiodieselfuelsapprovedforuseintheCASECONSTRUCTIONequipmentmustbetransesteriedand
complywiththeEuropeanStandardEN14214ortheGermanstandardDINV51606.
NOTICE:ColdPressedBiodiesel,ColdPressedOil,StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormoregenerallyunrenedveg-
etableoilsusedasmotorfuel,arefuelsthatarenormallymadefromRapeseedoilorsimilarhighoilcontentcrops.
Thesekindsoffuelarenottransesteried,sotheydonotfulltheEN14214requirements.Thereisnorecognized
qualitystandardavailableforthesetypesoffuel.ThereforetheuseofColdPressedBiodiesel,ColdPressedOil,
StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormoregenerallyunrenedvegetableoilsusedasmotorfuelareNOTAPPROVEDat
anyblendinanyCASECONSTRUCTIONproduct.
