Overview

This document describes the Char-Broil Professional Series 4 Burner gas grill, available in model numbers 468730017, 468830017, and 468830017DK. It is designed for outdoor use only and emphasizes safety, proper operation, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Char-Broil Professional Series 4 Burner is a gas-fired barbecue grill intended for outdoor cooking. It features multiple burners (four main burners) for versatile cooking, and some models may include a hot plate for additional cooking options. The grill operates by igniting gas from an LP cylinder, which heats cooking grates and heat tents to cook food. An electronic ignitor system is provided for easy startup, with a match-lighting option as a backup. The grill is equipped with a lid, control knobs for gas flow, and a temperature gauge for monitoring internal cooking temperature. It also includes a grease cup (if equipped) to collect drippings, and side shelves for convenience.

Important Technical Specifications

The grill has a total nominal heat input of 13.19 kW (960.0 g/h). It falls under gas categories I3+(28-30/37), I3B/P(30), and I3B/P(50), indicating its compatibility with different gas types and pressures.

  • Gas Type: Butane, Propane, or mixtures thereof.
  • Gas Pressure:
    • 28-30 mbar for Butane/Propane mixtures (GB, FR, BE, ES, IT, PT, CZ, SK).
    • 37 mbar for Propane (DK, NO, NL, SE, FI, IS, CZ, IT, SK).
    • 30 mbar for Butane/Propane mixtures (DK, NO, NL, SE, FI, IS, CZ, IT, SK).
    • 50 mbar for Butane/Propane mixtures (AT, DE, CH, LU).
  • Injector Size (Dia. mm):
    • Barbecue: 0.73 x 4 pcs (for 28-30 mbar and 37 mbar models).
    • Hotplate: 0.91 x 1 pcs (for 28-30 mbar and 37 mbar models).
    • Barbecue: 0.66 x 4 pcs (for 50 mbar models).
    • Hotplate: 0.81 x 1 pcs (for 50 mbar models).
  • Hose Length: Approved hose not exceeding 1.5m (1.2m for Finland).
  • Cylinder Placement: Cylinders of 6 kg or less can be placed on the ground under the side shelf or inside the appliance. Larger cylinders must be placed under the side shelf or behind the barbecue. Cylinders placed inside the appliance must have a maximum diameter of 340mm and a maximum height of 400mm.
  • Regulator: Must use a regulator certified to EN16129 (Flow rate max. 1.5 kg/h) and approved for the specific country and gas type.

Usage Features

The grill is designed for safe and efficient outdoor cooking.

  • Ignitor Lighting: To light, turn burner control valves to 'O' (off), open the lid, turn on gas at the LP cylinder, push and turn the burner knob to 'HIGH', then push and hold the ELECTRONIC IGNITOR button until the burner lights. If ignition doesn't occur within 5 seconds, turn controls off, wait 5 minutes, and repeat.
  • Match-Lighting: As a backup, place a lit match into the match holder, light the burner through the match light hole, and turn the burner knob to 'HIGH'.
  • Hot Plate (if equipped): Similar ignitor and match lighting procedures apply for the hot plate.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always use outdoors in a well-ventilated space; never indoors or in enclosed areas.
    • Maintain at least 1m clearance from any wall or surface and 3m clearance from flammable objects or ignition sources.
    • Do not move the appliance during use.
    • Keep children and pets away from the hot appliance.
    • Turn off gas supply at the cylinder after use.
    • Do not block holes or venturi openings.
    • Never cover grates with aluminum foil or other materials.
    • Do not use charcoal or ceramic briquets in a gas appliance.
    • Always turn off gas at the cylinder and disconnect the regulator before moving the gas cylinder.
    • Do not modify the appliance or disassemble injectors.
  • Grease Fires: Cannot be extinguished by closing the lid. Do not use water. If a persistent grease fire occurs, turn off knobs and the gas cylinder. Regular cleaning is crucial to prevent grease fires.
  • Spider Alert: Regularly check and clean venturis and burners to prevent blockages from spiders or insects, which can cause "flashback" problems and potential injury.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and safe operation of the grill.

  • Leak Testing: Perform a leak test before first use, at least once a year, and every time the cylinder is changed or disconnected. Use a soapy solution on hose connections; growing bubbles indicate a leak.
  • Burner Assembly Cleaning:
    1. Turn off gas at control knobs and LP cylinder.
    2. Remove cooking grates and heat tents.
    3. Remove carryover tubes and hardware securing burners.
    4. Detach electrode from burner.
    5. Clean burner tubes using a stiff wire, a narrow bottle brush, or an air hose.
    6. Wire brush the outer surface of the burner and clean blocked ports with a stiff wire.
    7. Check burners for damage and replace if necessary.
    8. Ensure burner tubes properly reengage valve openings during reassembly.
    9. Perform a "Leak Test" and "Burner Flame Check" after reassembly.
  • General Appliance Cleaning:
    • Clean often, preferably after each cookout. At least once a year.
    • Cooking Grates: Use a bristle brush, ensuring no loose bristles remain. Not recommended to clean while hot.
    • Interior: Use a strong solution of detergent and water or an appliance cleaner with a scrub brush. Rinse and air dry. Do not use caustic cleaners on painted surfaces.
    • Plastic Parts: Wash with warm soapy water and wipe dry. Avoid citrisol, abrasive cleaners, degreasers, or concentrated appliance cleaners.
    • Porcelain Surfaces: Clean with baking soda/water solution or specially formulated cleaner. Use nonabrasive scouring powder for stubborn stains.
    • Painted Surfaces: Wash with mild detergent or nonabrasive cleaner and warm soapy water.
    • Stainless Steel Surfaces: Wash with mild detergent and warm soapy water, wipe dry with a soft cloth. For baked-on grease, use an abrasive plastic cleaning pad, moving in the direction of the brushed finish. Do not use abrasive pads on areas with graphics or steel wool to avoid scratching and rust. Char-Broil recommends Eco-Safe Stainless Steel Cleaner Spray (#5278185) or Simply Soy Grill Wipes (#4629294).
  • Storage:
    • Clean cooking grates.
    • Store in a dry location.
    • If the gas cylinder is connected, store outdoors in a well-ventilated space and out of reach of children.
    • Cover the appliance if stored outdoors.
    • Store the appliance indoors ONLY if the gas cylinder is turned off, disconnected, removed, and stored outdoors.
    • Check for burner obstructions when removing from storage.
    • Covering the barbecue is recommended for rust protection, especially near coasts, swimming pools, or spas.
