The Charnwood Arc is a solid fuel roomheater, available in Arc 5 and Arc 7 models, designed for burning wood logs and smokeless fuel. It is approved for use in smoke control areas when operated according to the instructions.

Function Description:

The Charnwood Arc stove is designed to provide space heating through the combustion of solid fuels. It features a multi-grate system that allows for efficient burning of both wood and smokeless fuel. The stove incorporates an airwash system to help keep the glass clean and a throat plate to improve efficiency by slowing down flue gases. The rate of burning and heat output are controlled by an air control mechanism. The stove is suitable for intermittent operation.

Usage Features:

Multi-Grate System: Allows selection between "solid fuel position" (vertical bars for primary combustion air) and "wood position" (horizontal bars for ash build-up and air around the sides). Operated using the provided tool.
Riddling: The grate can be riddled with the door closed using the operating tool to clear ash. For wood burning, riddling should be carried out once or twice a week as ash build-up is necessary.
Air Control: A single air control lever manages the burning rate and output. Fully open (boost) for lighting or rapid burning, "click position" for high output, and fully closed for low burning. The Arc 5 Store Stand and Arc 5 Low models include factory-fitted modifications to the air controls to meet Clean Air Act requirements for smoke control exemption, preventing the stove from burning too slowly.
Door Handle: Pull to open.
Fuel Retainer: Ensures fuel does not protrude beyond the retainer.
Suitable Fuels: Dry well-seasoned wood logs (hardwoods preferred) and authorised smokeless fuels.
Unsuitable Fuels: Petroleum coke, liquid fuel, household waste, coal singles, small nuts or coal dust, wet or unseasoned wood.
Safety Precautions: Always use the provided operating tool and gloves as the stove will be hot. Do not use aerosol sprays near the stove when it is alight. A fireguard is required when children or infirm persons are present.
Lighting: Use dry kindling and paper or firelighters. Keep the air control fully out and the door closed (or slightly cracked open initially to assist combustion). Once established, add smaller logs, then larger logs, adjusting the air control as the fire becomes hot.
Controlling the Fire: The air control regulates the burn rate. The airwash system works best when the fire is up to temperature. A stove pipe thermometer is recommended for correct firing.
CO Alarm: Building regulations require a carbon monoxide alarm to be fitted in the same room as the appliance.

Maintenance Features:

Glass Cleaning: Wipe with a damp, lint-free cloth. Stubborn deposits can be removed with proprietary stove glass cleaner or ceramic hob cleaner. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
Throat Plate & Flueway Clearing: The upper and lower throat plates and all stove flueways must be cleaned at least monthly (more frequently if necessary) to prevent fume emission. The lower throat plate slides forward, then left or right to be lowered. The upper throat plate rests on air wash tubes.
Chimney Sweeping: The chimney should be swept at least twice a year. For top outlet or vertical rear flue connections, sweeping can generally be done through the appliance after removing the fuel retainer and throat plates. Soot doors may be necessary for other installations.
Door Seals: Check regularly for wear and fraying and replace as necessary to ensure correct operation.
Servicing: Annual servicing by a professional is recommended to maintain optimal working order. Check all internal parts for wear and ensure door seals are in good condition.
When Not in Use (Long Periods): Leave the air control fully open and the fire door ajar to prevent condensation and corrosion. Sweep the chimney and clean the fire. Spraying internal parts with a light oil (e.g., WD40) is also advised.
