Overview

The Chefman TurboFry Air Fryer (model RJ38-SQ-45TDC) is a kitchen appliance designed for air frying foods to crisp perfection with little to no oil, promoting healthier eating. Its sleek square design and stainless-steel accents make it a stylish addition to any kitchen.

Function Description

The core function of the TurboFry Air Fryer is to cook food using a high-speed fan that circulates hot air around the food. This process allows for even cooking and crisping, while also enabling excess fat to drip away from the food, contributing to healthier results. Unlike traditional deep fryers, this appliance requires little to no oil to achieve a crisp texture. If oil is desired, it should be lightly tossed with the food in a separate bowl before placing it in the air fryer, rather than filling the basket with oil.

The air fryer features a control panel with a digital display that automatically alternates between temperature and time settings. A central dial with a Start/Stop button allows users to easily adjust time and temperature. Turning the dial left decreases time and temperature, while turning it right increases them. The "Temp" button sets the temperature between 200°F and 400°F, and the "Time" button sets the cooking duration for up to 1 hour in 1-minute increments. Blinking dashes on the display indicate that the unit is actively cooking.

For added convenience, the control panel includes Food Pre-Set Icons for popular items like fries, chicken, meat, and fish. Pressing one of these icons automatically sets a suggested time and temperature for that specific food. The unit also includes a "Shake" reminder, which is a timed reminder to shake the basket if desired, ensuring even cooking.

Usage Features

Before first use, it's important to remove all packaging materials and stickers (except the rating label), check that all parts and accessories are accounted for, wipe down the interior and exterior with a damp cloth, and wash the basket and basket rack with warm, soapy water, drying them thoroughly.

To cook, users first prepare their food. The air fryer should be placed on a hard, flat surface and plugged in, which will illuminate the control panel and display the default temperature and time. The basket is then pulled out, and the basket rack is inserted, aligning the arrow on the rack with the arrow inside the basket. For easy handling of the basket rack, users can pinch the center grip bar with their thumb and index finger. Food is placed on the fry rack, ensuring it does not surpass the MAX line embossed on the basket, and then the basket is slid back into the air fryer.

Users can either set the time and temperature manually or use the pre-set cooking parameters by selecting the appropriate food icon. Once settings are chosen, pressing the Start button initiates cooking, and the fan will turn on, with animated dashes indicating heating.

During cooking, the basket can be removed to check on, turn, or shake foods. The timer and heating will resume automatically when the basket is returned. The "Shake" light on the control panel will illuminate and the air fryer will beep as a reminder to shake or flip foods, especially beneficial for smaller items like french fries, onion rings, and chicken wings. This light turns off when the basket is removed or automatically after about 15 seconds if the basket is not pulled out. Once the timer is done, the air fryer automatically turns off. Food should be checked for doneness and then carefully transferred to plates or a platter for serving.

For optimal results, preheating the air fryer for 5 minutes before cooking is recommended, as it cooks foods faster and promotes crisp results. If the unit is cold, a few minutes should be added to the expected cooking time. Care should be taken when adding food after preheating due to the hot interior. Lightly oiling foods, especially fresh ones, can enhance crispness. Wet batters are not suitable for air frying; recipes should be adapted to include thicker coatings, preferably with breadcrumbs. Medium-high to high heat (325°F to 400°F) is generally best for most cooking, while lower temperatures are suitable for gentler cooking and reheating. It's crucial not to overcrowd the basket to ensure proper browning and crisping; cooking in batches is recommended. Checking on foods early allows for adjustments to cooking time. Always follow food safety guidelines for doneness, as air fryer temperatures and food sizes can vary.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning and maintenance are straightforward. The unit should be unplugged and allowed to cool completely before cleaning. For faster cooling, the hot basket can be kept out of the unit. The nonstick coating on the basket and rack makes them easy to clean. The cooled rack can be removed from the basket by using tongs to pinch the center grip bar and pulling it straight up. The basket and rack should be washed with warm, soapy water, rinsed, and dried thoroughly with a towel. Both the basket and rack are also top-rack dishwasher-safe.

The exterior and interior of the unit, including the heating coil, should be wiped down with a damp cloth as needed. It is important never to put the unit in the dishwasher or submerge it in water or any other liquid. Abrasive cleansers should not be used on the basket, rack, exterior, or interior, as they can damage the finishes.

During initial use, a slight odor and/or some smoke may be noticed, which is normal and will quickly dissipate with continued use. If white smoke occurs during cooking, it may indicate too much fat in the fryer; cooking very fatty foods like sausages should be avoided, and the basket, rack, and heating coil should be clean before cooking. To prevent uneven cooking, avoid overcrowding the basket and remember to shake, toss, or flip foods at least once. For crispier results, lightly coating foods with oil (about ½ teaspoon per batch) and preheating the fryer can help. The air fryer should be stored in a cool, dry place.
