This document provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, use, and maintenance of the COINTRA Optima instantaneous gas water heater. It is designed to ensure maximum hot water comfort and safe operation.
Function Description
The COINTRA Optima is an instantaneous gas water heater designed to provide hot water on demand. It features advanced technology to efficiently heat water using gas. The device is equipped with an electronic ignition system, eliminating the need for a permanent pilot light, which contributes to energy savings.
Key functional components include:
- Incorporated draught diverter: This ensures proper combustion by managing draught changes in the burnt gas evacuation duct (flue). Its design integrates seamlessly, allowing for a sleek heater cover without gratings.
- Heat exchanger: Made of pure electrolytic copper with a caloric coating, it ensures high heat transfer efficiency to the water.
- Burner: Utilizes advanced technology to maximize the efficiency of gas consumption.
- Ignition safety valve: An electric system that only allows gas to flow to the burners when the pilot light's presence is confirmed, ensuring safe ignition.
- Special hydraulic device: Automatically activates the water heating mechanisms when a hot water tap is turned on. This device also ensures that gas passage is only open when water circulates through the exchanger, enhancing safety and efficiency.
- Electronic Ionisation probe: This probe ensures smooth burner operation through ionisation control.
- Electrode ignition: Provides continuous sparks to ignite the burner when hot water is demanded.
- Temperature restrictor thermostat: A safety feature that limits the water temperature.
- Control device for gas evacuation (TTB): This device disconnects the heater if the combustion gas outlet is obstructed, preventing the accumulation of harmful gases.
- Electronic control module: Manages the overall operation of the water heater.
Usage Features
The COINTRA Optima water heater offers user-friendly controls for selecting power and temperature.
Prior Checks:
Before operating the water heater, ensure:
- All hot water taps are turned off.
- The gas stopcock to the water heater is open.
- The 1.5 V batteries are correctly installed with the correct polarity and the safety seal removed.
- Batteries are sufficiently charged for the water heater to function.
Manual Selection of Burner Power:
- To ignite the appliance, turn the gas knob from the minimum position to one of the two minimum or maximum positions.
- The gas knob allows you to select the required hot water intensity. Turning the knob to the large flame position provides full power for maximum heating.
- If the water temperature is too high (e.g., in summer) or if a small volume of moderately hot water is needed, turn the knob to the small flame position to reduce power and gas consumption by almost half.
Temperature Selection:
- The Temperature Selector allows easy adjustment of the hot water temperature. Turn the selector to the right for higher temperatures and to the left for lower temperatures.
Hot Water Service:
- Once the desired settings are selected, opening a hot water tap will automatically initiate the heating process. The ignition electrode will generate continuous sparks to light the burner.
- The ionisation probe monitors the flame. If the flame is not detected due to an issue in the gas circuit, the ignition electrode will automatically generate sparks for a few seconds to re-ignite the burner. If the heater still does not turn on, it will be out of service, indicating a problem that needs to be resolved (e.g., gas stopcock turned off, empty gas cylinder).
- The water heater block is deactivated by turning hot water taps on and off. If the hot water supply is not re-established after resolving an issue, repeat the operation or contact Technical Support.
- The flame's presence in the burner can be observed through a window on the cover.
Turning Off the Water Heater:
- To turn off the water heater, turn the gas knob back to the position.
- It is highly recommended to turn off the installation's stopcock when the unit is not frequently used.
Maintenance Features
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficient operation of your COINTRA Optima water heater.
General Maintenance:
- Cleaning: Use a cloth with soapy water to clean the front cover. Avoid abrasive detergents and solvents.
- Annual Check: To extend the life of your water heater, it should be maintained and cleaned once a year by an Official Technical Service.
Preventive Measures:
- Against Lime: In areas with hard water, to prevent lime deposition that can affect heat transmission, it is recommended to limit the output temperature by adjusting the temperature selector.
- Against Ice: In cold areas, to prevent damage from freezing:
- Close the water inlet valve to the heater.
- Open the lowest hot water tap (e.g., the bidet).
- Open the drain valve in the lower part of the heater to allow water to drain and air to enter.
Adapting to Different Gases:
- The water heater is factory-equipped for a specific gas type. If adaptation to a different gas is required, it must be performed by a competent authorized professional using original COINTRA parts and in accordance with local regulations. This involves:
- Turning off water and gas supply, removing knobs, and the front cover.
- Replacing the injector nozzles in the burner with those specific to the new gas type.
- Replacing the gas front valve mechanism, ensuring correct mounting.
- Placing a new technical data sticker to indicate the correct gas adaptation.
- Important: The adjusting screw of minimum flow, located in the body of water, is sealed and must not be manipulated in any way.
Burnt Gas Evacuation Control Device (T.T.B.):
- The T.T.B. safety element ensures proper evacuation of combustion products. It should not be deactivated or tampered with. If disturbances occur, the device interrupts the gas supply to the burner.
- If the T.T.B. device activates, check the burnt gas outlet for obstructions using a cooled mirror with running water or an approved measuring device.
- In case of damage, only original spare parts should be used for replacement to ensure proper functioning.
- Replacement Procedure (by experts): Remove the defective T.T.B. device by loosening screws, remove the thermocouple, insert a new original thermocouple, attach the T.T.B. device to the smoke box without forcing, and check its proper functioning.
- Models designed for "Exclusive outside installation" do not require this device.
Environmental Note:
- To protect the environment, dispose of used batteries in designated collection containers.
- Ensure proper air inlet and outlet in the premises where the water heater is located, as per GAS Installations Regulations.
