Overview

This document describes the Rinnai Continuum Model 2424, an outdoor-unit, continuous flow water heater designed for residential use. It provides detailed specifications, installation instructions, safety guidelines, operational procedures, maintenance tips, and troubleshooting information.

Function Description:

The Rinnai Continuum Model 2424 is a temperature-controlled, continuous flow gas hot water system. Unlike traditional tank water heaters, it heats water on demand, meaning it only heats water when a hot water tap is opened, providing an endless supply of hot water. This design contributes to energy efficiency by avoiding standby heat loss. The unit can be operated with or without remote controls and can be mounted in various locations such as the kitchen, bathroom, etc. It is designed for outdoor installation only.

Usage Features:

The Continuum 2424 offers several user-friendly features:

  • Continuous Hot Water: Provides an endless supply of hot water on demand, eliminating the need to wait for a tank to refill.
  • Remote Controls: Allows users to set and adjust water temperature from various locations within the home (kitchen, bathroom, second bathroom) using optional remote controllers. The digital monitor on the remote displays the selected water temperature and any error messages.
  • Priority Button: On the remote control, pressing the "Priority" button transfers control of the water temperature to that specific controller.
  • Adjusting Temperature: The temperature can be adjusted using the up and down arrows on the digital monitor.
  • Safety Features: Includes multiple safety devices such as flame failure detection, boiling protection, thermal fuses, automatic frost protection, and overcurrent protection to ensure safe operation.
  • Energy Efficiency: The continuous flow design and high efficiency rating contribute to reduced energy consumption compared to traditional water heaters.
  • Quiet Operation: With a noise level of 49 dB (A), the unit operates quietly.
  • Outdoor Installation: Specifically designed for outdoor use, freeing up indoor space.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficient operation of the Continuum 2424.

  • Visual Check: Regularly inspect the front view of the burner for a blue flame (satisfactory) or a yellow flame (unsatisfactory).
  • Cleaning: The water heater must be cleaned annually. This involves cleaning the water heater clear of dust and debris, especially in and around the burner. Cleaning procedures include turning off and disconnecting electrical power, removing the front panel, removing screws, using pressurized air to remove dust from the main burner, and using a soft dry cloth to wipe the cabinet.
  • Vent Maintenance: The vent system must be checked annually for blockage or deterioration.
  • Electrical Motors Maintenance: Electrical motors require permanent lubrication and need no lubrication. Keep the fan and motor free of dust and dirt, and clean annually.
  • Lime Condition Warning: The remote key pad will display "LC" flashing if lime buildup is detected. This indicates that the unit needs to be flushed by a qualified Rinnai service technician to prevent damage and maintain performance.
  • Gas Supply Check: Ensure there is gas and electricity to the unit if hot water is not being produced.
  • Professional Service: For any complex issues, such as error messages (e.g., air supply or exhaust blockage, no ignition, flame failure, over temperature warning, heat exchanger issues, solenoid valve faults, flame sensing device faults, scale buildup), it is recommended to contact a Rinnai Authorized Service Representative or Rinnai directly.
  • Preventive Measures: To prevent freezing in cold climates, ensure the automatic frost protection system is functioning correctly. If power to the unit is lost in freezing conditions, drain the water from the unit to prevent damage.
  • Water Filter: The unit includes a water filter that should be checked and cleaned periodically to prevent debris from entering the system.
