Overview

This document is an Operator's Manual for a Large Mower, specifically a 28" Rear Wheel Drive model series W3 and W6. It covers safe operation practices, set-up, operation, service, and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The primary function of this machine is to mow grass. It is a walk-behind, self-propelled lawn mower designed for residential use. The mower is capable of mulching, bagging, or side discharging grass clippings, offering versatility based on user preference and lawn conditions. The self-propelled mechanism assists the operator by propelling the mower forward, reducing physical effort.

Important Technical Specifications

While specific engine details (horsepower, displacement) are referred to in a separate Engine Operator's Manual, the document highlights key operational aspects:

  • Cutting Width: 28 inches.
  • Drive System: Rear Wheel Drive, self-propelled.
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: Features either a single lever for simultaneous front and rear wheel height adjustment (standard wheel models) or separate adjustments for rear wheels (single lever) and caster wheels (six positions).
  • Blade Torque: Hex flange nuts securing the blades should be tightened to 70 ft-lb (min.) to 90 ft-lb (max.).
  • Battery (If Equipped): Requires a 120V household outlet for charging, with an initial charge time of 8 to 10 hours (not exceeding 12 hours).
  • Fuel Type: Regular unleaded gasoline.
  • Oil Type: Specifics are in the Engine Operator's Manual.
  • Slope Operation Limit: Not to be operated on slopes greater than 15 degrees (a rise of approximately 2-1/2 feet every 10 feet). A slope gauge is provided for measurement.
  • Average Useful Life: Seven (7) years or 140 hours of operation, as per CPSC and EPA guidelines.

Usage Features

  • Starting: Can be started via a recoil starter (pull cord) or an electric starter (if equipped), which uses a removable push key.
  • Blade Engagement: Features a two-step process involving a lockout lever and a blade control lever, designed as a safety device.
  • Self-Propelled Drive: Engaged by a Premium Drive Control on the upper handle. Pushing the control forward increases speed.
  • Grass Clipping Management:
    • Mulching: The mower ships as a mulcher. The mulch plug is used to recirculate clippings back into the lawn.
    • Bagging: A grass catcher (if equipped) can be attached to collect clippings. High lift blades are recommended for effective bagging.
    • Side Discharge: A side discharge chute can be attached to direct clippings to the side.
  • Handle Adjustment: The handle height can be adjusted to one of two positions for operator comfort.
  • Caster Wheels (If Equipped): Can be locked in a straight-ahead position or allowed to swivel freely for maneuverability.
  • Deck Wash System (Smart Jet): A water port on the deck allows for easy cleaning of the deck's underside by attaching a garden hose.

Maintenance Features

  • General Maintenance: Regular checks of fasteners, engine-governed speed, and adjustments are recommended.
  • Lubrication: Pivot points on blade and drive controls should be lubricated with light oil at least once a season. Front caster wheels (if equipped) have grease fittings and require No. 2 multi-purpose grease every 25 hours or once a season.
  • Engine Maintenance: Detailed instructions are in the separate Engine Operator's Manual, but the manual highlights maintaining oil level, servicing the air cleaner, cleaning/gapping the spark plug, and keeping the engine clean.
  • Blade Care: Blades should be inspected frequently for damage, sharpened to a 25°-30° angle, and balanced to prevent excessive vibration. Heavy gloves are recommended when handling blades.
  • Belt Care: Belts require special tools and should be replaced by an authorized service dealer.
  • Battery Charging/Storage (If Equipped): The battery should be charged before initial use and stored fully charged, with monthly charging during off-season to prolong life. The electric starter push key should be removed when the mower is unattended or stored.
  • Mower Deck Cleaning: Recommended every 25 hours or before off-season storage, involving removal of the deck cover and cleaning grass clippings/debris. The Smart Jet system provides an easy way to rinse the deck underside after each mowing.
  • Off-Season Storage: Involves cleaning, lubricating, applying chassis grease to blades, and storing in a dry, clean area away from corrosive materials. Rust-proofing with light oil or silicone is suggested for storage in poorly ventilated sheds.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive table helps diagnose common issues like engine failure to start, erratic running, overheating, uneven cut, and self-propulsion problems, providing corresponding remedies.
