Overview

The Cuisinart DCC-5570 Series 5-Cup Stainless Steel Coffeemaker is designed to provide a convenient and efficient way to brew coffee for household use. This instruction booklet outlines important safeguards, operating procedures, and maintenance tips to ensure safe and enjoyable use of the product.

Function Description

The primary function of this appliance is to brew coffee. It is equipped with a removable water reservoir, a charcoal water filter, a filter basket, and a 5-cup stainless steel carafe. The coffeemaker operates by heating water, which then passes through a showerhead to evenly distribute over ground coffee in the filter basket. The brewed coffee then drips into the stainless steel carafe, which is kept warm on an auto-off plate.

The coffeemaker is designed to make up to 5 cups of coffee, with each cup defined as 5 oz. It incorporates a charcoal water filter to enhance coffee flavor by removing chlorine, bad tastes, and odors from tap water. The brewing process is initiated by pressing the ON/OFF power button, and a blue indicator light signals the brewing status.

A key feature is the Brew Pause™ function, which temporarily stops the flow of coffee from the basket, allowing users to pour a cup mid-brew. However, it's noted that using this feature may weaken the flavor strength of the finished pot due to differences in flavor extraction at various stages of the brewing cycle. After the brewing cycle is complete, the coffeemaker automatically enters a Keep Warm function, maintaining the carafe's temperature for up to 30 minutes.

Usage Features

To ensure optimal coffee flavor, the manual emphasizes four key elements: water, coffee, grind, and proportion.

  1. Water: Coffee is 98% water, so the quality of water is crucial. The included charcoal water filter helps achieve the purest coffee flavor by removing impurities.
  2. Coffee: Using high-quality, fresh coffee beans is recommended. For those who grind their own beans, buying a two-week supply at a time is suggested, as flavor degrades quickly once beans are broken.
  3. Grind: The grind size is critical for proper flavor extraction. A medium-fine grind is recommended. Too fine a grind can lead to over-extraction and bitterness, potentially clogging the filter, while too coarse a grind results in under-extraction.
  4. Proportion: The recommended proportion is one level scoop (one tablespoon) of ground coffee per cup (5 oz.). Users can adjust this amount to suit their taste. The maximum capacity for ground coffee is 5 scoops (5 tablespoons) for this 25 oz. coffeemaker; exceeding this amount may cause overflow, especially if the coffee is too finely ground.

Before the first use, it is recommended to flush the system by running a full reservoir of water through the coffeemaker without adding coffee.

Brewing Process:

  1. Charcoal Water Filter Insertion: The filter should be removed from its polybag, soaked in cold tap water for 15 minutes, and then placed into the water filter holder. The filter holder is then slid back into the water reservoir. The filter should be flushed with cold tap water for 10 seconds before use.
  2. Filling the Water Reservoir: The removable water reservoir is filled with the desired amount of water and placed back on the unit.
  3. Inserting Filter and Adding Ground Coffee: The filter basket is removed, and either a 1x2 paper filter or the permanent nylon filter is inserted. If using a paper filter, ensure it is completely open and fully inserted. Ground coffee is then added using the measuring scoop, adhering to the recommended proportions.
  4. Pre-Brewing Check: Ensure the carafe is correctly positioned on the heating plate and the top cover is closed.
  5. Beginning Brewing: Press the ON/OFF button. The blue indicator light will turn on and flash during brewing. Brewing can be stopped at any time by pressing the ON/OFF button again.
  6. Post-Brewing: Once brewing is complete, the blue indicator light will stop flashing and remain on. The coffeemaker will then enter the Keep Warm function for 30 minutes, after which the blue indicator light will turn off.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and decalcification are essential for maintaining the coffeemaker's performance and longevity.

Cleaning and Maintenance:

  • General Cleaning: Always turn off the coffeemaker and unplug it from the electrical outlet before cleaning.
  • Filter Basket: Remove and discard paper filters and ground coffee. The filter basket can be washed in warm, soapy water, rinsed thoroughly, or cleaned in the upper rack of the dishwasher. All parts should be dried after use.
  • Unit Base: Do not immerse the base unit in water or other liquids. The area under the filter basket should be wiped with a damp cloth. The base can be cleaned with a clean, damp cloth and dried before storing. Fingerprints and blemishes on the housing can be cleaned with soap and water or a nonabrasive cleaning solution.
  • Carafe: The carafe and lid can be washed in warm, soapy water, rinsed thoroughly, or placed in the upper rack of the dishwasher. If hand-washing, carefully hand-dry or air-dry the carafe in an upright position.
  • Heating Plate: Wipe the heating plate with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid using rough, abrasive materials or cleansers on the heating plate or any part of the coffeemaker.
  • Nylon Filter: The permanent nylon filter may show some discoloration after repeated uses, even with thorough rinsing, but this will not affect the taste or quality of the coffee.
  • Water Reservoir: Discoloration or staining in the water reservoir is normal over time due to mineral content in water. It should be cleaned regularly with a damp, lint-free cloth to minimize buildup.

Decalcification:

Decalcification is the process of removing calcium deposits that accumulate on the metal parts of the coffeemaker over time. The frequency of decalcification depends on water hardness and usage.

  • Procedure:
    1. Remove the charcoal water filter from the water filter holder before decalcifying.
    2. Turn on the coffeemaker by pressing the ON/OFF button.
    3. Fill the water reservoir to capacity with a mixture of 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 water.
    4. Run one full brewing cycle with this solution.
    5. After the cycle, the coffeemaker will enter Keep Warm mode. Press the ON/OFF button to turn off the coffeemaker.

This process is sufficient to adequately clean the coffeemaker. If the coffeemaker brews slowly or leaves residual water in the reservoir after a cycle, it indicates a need for decalcification.

Important Safeguards:

The manual emphasizes several safety precautions, including:

  • Reading all instructions before use.
  • Unplugging the appliance when not in use or before cleaning.
  • Avoiding contact with hot surfaces.
  • Not immersing the cord, plug, or base unit in water or other liquids.
  • Not operating the appliance with a damaged cord or plug, or if it malfunctions.
  • Not using accessory attachments not recommended by Cuisinart.
  • Not using the appliance outdoors.
  • Not allowing the cord to hang over the edge of a table or counter or touch hot surfaces.
  • Not placing the appliance on or near a hot gas or electric burner or in a heated oven.
  • Always filling the water reservoir first, then plugging into the wall outlet.
  • Not using the appliance for other than its intended use.
  • Exercising caution as scalding may occur if the lid is removed during brewing.
  • Using only the provided stainless steel carafe with this coffeemaker.
  • Not placing a hot carafe on a wet or cold surface.
  • Not using a cracked carafe or one with a loose or weakened handle.
  • Not cleaning the carafe or heating plate with abrasive materials.
  • Not removing the base panel, as there are no user-serviceable parts inside.
  • Not restricting airflow by placing cloth beneath the coffeemaker.
  • Using only the Cuisinart commercial-style filter or standard basket paper filter to prevent overflow.
  • Not operating the appliance in an appliance garage.
  • Snapping the lid securely onto the carafe before serving.
  • Supervising children to ensure they do not play with the appliance.
  • Being aware that the heating element is subject to residual heat after use.

The manual also includes warnings about the risk of fire or electric shock, advising against opening the unit's cover or back. It also provides an operating notice regarding potential clogging and backing up of water/coffee in the filter basket, which can be caused by too finely ground coffee, using multiple paper filters, or improper cleaning. It cautions against opening the filter basket during the brewing cycle due to the risk of hot water/coffee spilling out.
