The Cuisinart 12-Cup Programmable Thermal Coffeemaker, part of the DTC-975 Series, is designed to deliver fresh, flavorful coffee with convenience and ease. This appliance is intended for household use only and features a range of functionalities that enhance the coffee-making experience, from programmable brewing to specialized thermal insulation.
At its core, the coffeemaker's primary function is to brew coffee. It operates by heating water and passing it through ground coffee held in a filter basket, then dispensing the brewed coffee into a thermal carafe. The unit is designed to be user-friendly, allowing for simple operation and maintenance. Before its first use, it's recommended to run a brew cycle with just water to clean the system.
One of the standout features is its Patented Lid. This innovative lid allows coffee to brew and pour without the need for manual opening or adjustment. This design is crucial for maintaining the coffee's temperature and flavor, as it seals in heat and aroma for hours after brewing. This means you can enjoy hot, fresh coffee long after it's been made, without the usual degradation in quality that can occur with traditional carafes.
The coffeemaker includes a Reservoir Cover that lifts easily for filling the water reservoir. Once water is added, the cover closes securely. Adjacent to this is the Water Window, which features magnified markings. These markings clearly indicate the amount of water needed for a corresponding number of cups of coffee, helping users to accurately measure and avoid overfilling. The maximum fill line is 12 cups, and it's important not to exceed this to prevent overflow.
For holding the coffee grounds, the unit is equipped with a Filter Basket. This basket swings open for easy insertion of a coffee filter. Users should ensure the filter fits snugly and that the basket is securely closed before starting the brew cycle to ensure safe operation and prevent spills. After brewing, the basket can be easily removed for discarding used grounds.
A key component for keeping coffee hot is the Stainless Double-wall Thermal Insulated Carafe. This carafe is specifically designed to maintain the coffee's temperature for extended periods. To maximize its heat retention, it's recommended to prewarm the carafe by running warm water through it before brewing. The carafe's lid must be in the "CLOSED" position during brewing and pouring to preserve freshness and temperature. It's crucial never to pour liquid from the thermal carafe unless the lid is in the "CLOSED" position.
The coffeemaker also boasts a Programmable Thermal Coffeemaker feature, allowing users to set a desired brew time. This "Auto-Brew Cycle" enables the unit to start brewing automatically at a pre-set time. To program, users press and hold the "program" button, then use the "hour" and "minute" buttons to set the desired start time. Once activated by depressing the "auto on" button, the "auto" symbol illuminates on the LCD screen, indicating that the unit will begin brewing at the programmed time. When the cycle starts, a red "ON" indicator light will illuminate. The unit will continue to attempt to brew at the programmed time each day until the "Off" button is pressed. If there's no water in the reservoir, the unit will automatically shut off after one minute.
Another convenient feature is Brew Pause™. This allows users to pour a cup of coffee before the entire brew cycle is complete. When the thermal carafe is carefully removed from the platform, the Brew Pause™ feature automatically activates, temporarily stopping the flow of coffee from the filter basket. It's important to return the carafe to the platform within 30 seconds to prevent the filter basket from overflowing. While this feature is handy, users should note that the strength of coffee poured mid-cycle may vary from the finished brew.
The coffeemaker provides visual feedback through an "ON" Indicator Light, which illuminates when power is on, and an LCD Readout that displays the time and programming symbols. An audible "beep" tone signals when the brew cycle is complete, and the coffeemaker automatically switches off.
Regarding maintenance, daily cleaning is straightforward. The coffeemaker should always be unplugged and allowed to cool before cleaning. The filter basket, carafe, and lid can be washed in hot, soapy water and rinsed thoroughly, though they are not recommended for dishwasher use. It's important not to use scouring agents or harsh cleansers on any part of the coffeemaker. The base unit should never be immersed in water or other liquid; instead, it should be wiped with a clean, damp cloth and dried. The resting plate should also be cleaned with a damp cloth, avoiding rough or abrasive materials. The inside of the water reservoir should not be dried with a cloth, as lint may remain.
Monthly maintenance is recommended to prevent mineral buildup, which can clog the coffeemaker and reduce its efficiency. This involves filling the thermal carafe with 2 cups of vinegar and cold water to the top, then pouring this mixture into the reservoir. With the empty thermal carafe (lid securely closed) on the platform, the "ON" button should be pressed to run a cycle. After the mixture has cycled through, the "OFF" button should be pressed. The unit should then be rinsed by cycling through 2 or 3 more carafes of plain cold tap water. It's crucial not to pour any liquid other than cold tap water or the water/vinegar mixture into the reservoir opening during cleaning.
Safety precautions are emphasized throughout the manual. Users should avoid touching hot surfaces and use handles and knobs. The cord, plugs, or appliance should not be placed in water or other liquid to protect against electrical shock. Close supervision is necessary when children are near the appliance. The unit should be unplugged when not in use and before cleaning. It should not be operated with a damaged cord or plug, or if it malfunctions or is damaged in any way, and should be returned to an authorized service facility for repair. The use of non-evaluated accessories may cause injuries. The coffeemaker should not be used outdoors, and the cord should not hang over the edge of a table or counter or touch hot surfaces. It should not be placed on or near a hot gas or electric burner or in a heated oven. The entire unit should not be moved when it's on or when the thermal carafe contains hot liquids. All controls should be turned to "OFF" before connecting or disconnecting the plug. The appliance is for household use only.
Specific warnings for the thermal carafe include: it is designed for use with this appliance only and should never be used with other drip-type coffeemakers, on a range top, or in a microwave oven. A hot thermal carafe should not be placed on a wet or cold surface, in water, or on a hot surface. Cracked carafes or those with loose/weakened handles should not be used. The carafe should not be cleaned with cleaners, steel wool pads, or abrasive material, nor should sharp or hard objects be placed inside it. Finally, a cloth or anything else should not restrict airflow beneath the coffeemaker. The bottom of the thermal carafe is hot to touch for several minutes after brewing, so caution is advised. Burns may result from spilled hot liquid and/or contact with hot parts.
