Checking and relling levels12-volt battery
291
If necessary, the power of the most powerful
consumers is limited or, in an emergency, they
are switched o completely.
On-board network management cannot al-
ways prevent the 12 volt battery from discharg-
ing. This is the case if, for example, the vehicle
is left parked with the ignition or the side- or
parking light switched on for a long period of
time.
Factors causing the 12-volt battery to dis-
charge
Use of electric consumers while the drive
system is disconnected.
WARNING
Attaching the 12-volt battery incorrectly or
using unsuitable batteries may result in short
circuits, re and serious injury.
Use only maintenance-free 12 volt batter-
ies with an anti-spill system with the same
properties, specications and dimensions as
the factory-tted battery.
WARNING
Charging the 12-volt battery creates a highly
explosive mixture of detonating gases.
Only charge the 12-volt battery in a well-
ventilated place.
Never charge a 12-volt battery that is fro-
zen or has thawed. When the battery is dis-
charged, it may freeze at temperatures close
to 0°C (+32°F).
If the 12-volt battery has frozen, have it re-
placed without fail.
A short circuit may occur if the wires are
incorrectly connected to the poles. First con-
nect the positive cable and then the negative
one.
NOTICE
Never connect or disconnect the 12-volt
battery while the drive system is switched on.
Also, never use a 12-volt battery that does
not meet the vehicle's battery specications.
The electrical system or certain electronic
components could be damaged and electri-
cal malfunctions could occur.
Never connect accessories that supply
power, such as solar panels or battery charg-
ers, to the 12-volt socket or cigarette lighter,
to charge the 12-volt battery. This could
damage the vehicle's electrical system.
For the sake of the environment
The battery may contain toxic substances,
such as sulphuric acid and lead. Dispose of
the 12 volt battery in accordance with the
applicable regulations.
Electrolyte can contaminate the environ-
ment. If any operating uid leaks out, collect
it and dispose of it properly.
Troubleshooting
12 volt battery
The control lamp lights up in RED. The follow-
ing messages may be displayed:
Error: 12 V battery not charging.
Stop vehicle safely!
Error: 12V power supply. Stop
safely! Manual!
Stop driving! Stop the vehicle at the next
opportunity and in a safe place. The 12-volt
battery will not be charged while driving or
there is a fault in the on-board 12-volt network.
Switch o any electrical consumers that are
not required.
Contact a specialised workshop.
Request a check of the electrical system.
