Overview

The CyberPower EcoLogic UPS Series is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed to provide power protection and backup for electronic equipment. It includes models such as the EC450G, EC550G, EC750G, EC650LCD, and EC850LCD. This UPS is certified for energy efficiency by the California Energy Commission (CEC), reflecting CyberPower Systems' commitment to producing energy-efficient products.

Function Description

The primary function of the EcoLogic UPS is to provide temporary, uninterrupted power to connected equipment during power failures, brownouts, or over-voltage events. It achieves this through a combination of battery backup and surge suppression. The UPS is equipped with both battery-supported and surge-protected outlets, as well as full-time surge protection outlets, some of which are also ECO controlled.

The battery-supported outlets ensure that critical equipment like computers and monitors continue to operate during power disturbances, allowing users to save work and shut down systems gracefully. The full-time surge protection outlets protect less critical peripherals, such as printers and scanners, from power surges and line noise.

A key feature of this series is the ECO Function, which is designed to save energy. When activated, the UPS can detect if a connected PC (via the USB port) is turned off or in sleep mode. If the PC is off, the UPS will automatically cut power to the ECO controlled outlets, thereby powering down connected peripherals that are not in use and reducing energy consumption. This function is particularly useful for peripherals that are typically not needed when the main computer is off.

The UPS also includes a circuit breaker for overload and fault protection. If the connected equipment exceeds the unit's rated capacity, the circuit breaker will trip to prevent damage.

Usage Features

The EcoLogic UPS is designed for straightforward installation and operation. Upon receipt, it is recommended to charge the battery for at least 8 hours to ensure maximum charge capacity, although the UPS has an auto-charge feature that charges the battery whenever it's plugged into an AC outlet, regardless of whether the UPS is turned on or off. For safety during shipment, the UPS requires connection to AC power to turn on for the first time.

Connecting equipment involves plugging computers, monitors, and other battery-backup-requiring peripherals into the battery-supported outlets. Other peripherals like printers and scanners should be connected to the full-time surge protection outlets. It is crucial to avoid plugging high-power devices such as laser printers, paper shredders, copiers, space heaters, vacuum cleaners, or sump pumps into the battery-supported outlets, as this can overload and damage the unit. The UPS must be plugged into a grounded wall outlet protected by a fuse or circuit breaker, and the use of extension cords or surge strips in conjunction with the UPS is prohibited by the warranty.

Operating the UPS is simple: press the power switch for approximately 2 seconds to turn it on or off. An audible alarm will sound to confirm the action. The Power On indicator light illuminates green when the UPS is receiving normal utility power and providing power to its outlets.

For models with an LCD display (EC650LCD and EC850LCD), a Mode Switch allows users to enter a setup mode to adjust various settings, including Utility High Voltage Range, Utility Low Voltage Range, ECO ON/OFF, and LCD sleep ON/OFF. The LCD display provides real-time information on UPS operational conditions, such as input voltage, output voltage, estimated runtime, battery capacity, and load capacity. Icons indicate normal operation, battery mode, and overload conditions.

Audible alarms provide important notifications: a constant tone for battery overload, a beep twice every 30 seconds for utility failure (UPS on battery power), and rapid beeping every 1/2 second when the battery is running low. The alarm setting can be toggled on or off by double-clicking the power button.

The ECO Function can be enabled or disabled via the Mode Switch (for LCD models) or the ECO Button (for non-LCD models). When the ECO function is active, an ECO Indicator LED provides visual feedback on its status: solid green when the PC is on and peripherals receive power, blinking when the PC is off or disconnected (peripherals are off), and off when the ECO function is disabled.

The UPS units feature widely-spaced outlets to accommodate AC power adapters without blocking adjacent outlets. A USB port allows communication between the UPS and a computer, enabling the use of CyberPower's PowerPanel® Personal software for advanced management and monitoring. This USB connection is also essential for the ECO Mode to function correctly, as it allows the UPS to detect the PC's power state.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the EcoLogic UPS involves a few simple steps to ensure optimal performance and longevity. To maintain optimal battery charge, the UPS should remain plugged into an AC outlet at all times. The battery will automatically charge when connected to AC power.

For extended storage, the UPS should be covered and stored with a fully charged battery. It is recommended to recharge the battery every three months to ensure optimal battery life.

If an overload condition occurs, indicated by an audible alarm and a long beep, the user should turn off the UPS, unplug at least one piece of equipment from the battery-supplied outlets, reset the circuit breaker (if it has tripped), and then turn the UPS back on.

In cases where the UPS does not perform as expected (e.g., short runtime or failure to turn on), troubleshooting steps include ensuring the battery is fully charged, checking for worn-out batteries, verifying proper connection to an AC outlet, and ensuring the input frequency is within the acceptable range. If the battery is worn out or there's a mechanical problem, contacting CyberPower Systems for replacement batteries or support is recommended.

The USB port facilitates communication with PowerPanel® Personal software, which can help monitor the UPS status and manage settings. If the software is inactive, checking the USB cable connection and trying a different USB port are suggested. If the unit is not providing battery power, a system reset (turning the UPS off, waiting 10 seconds, and turning it back on) might resolve the issue.

CyberPower Systems encourages environmentally sound methods for disposal and recycling of its UPS products and batteries in accordance with local regulations. The device is manufactured using environmentally-safe procedures in compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive.
