Overview

This document describes the Daewoo KOR-860A Microwave Oven, providing detailed instructions for its operation, maintenance, and safety.

Function Description

The Daewoo KOR-860A is a microwave oven designed for heating, cooking, and defrosting food. It utilizes ISM frequency energy to cook food quickly and efficiently. The oven offers various cooking modes, including one-stage cooking, two-stage cooking, and specialized one-touch cooking for popular items like popcorn, frozen pizza, and beverages. It also features automatic defrosting based on either time or weight, simplifying the process of preparing frozen foods. The microwave oven is equipped with a digital display that shows cooking time, power level, and the current time. A Kitchen Timer mode allows for minute timing, delayed cooking starts, or setting a holding time after cooking. The oven operates on a standard 120V AC 60Hz power supply and is designed for household use.

Usage Features

The microwave oven offers a user-friendly interface with several pads for different functions.

Setting the Clock: Upon plugging in, the display flashes ":0". The clock can be set to either a 12-hour or 24-hour system by pressing the CLOCK pad once or twice, respectively. The time is then entered using the number pads, followed by pressing the CLOCK pad again and then STOP/CLEAR. If an incorrect time is entered, an error signal will sound, and the user must re-enter the time.

Time Defrosting: To defrost food by time, press the DEFROST pad, enter the desired defrosting time using the number pads (up to 59 minutes 99 seconds), and then press START. The oven will cycle on and off, and beep signals will indicate when the food needs to be turned or rearranged.

Weight Defrosting: For automatic defrosting based on weight, select the food category (MEAT, POULTRY, or FISH) by pressing the corresponding pad. The display will show a default weight (e.g., "1.0" for meat). Repeatedly press the category pad to select the desired weight from the weight defrost chart. Press START to begin defrosting. The oven will beep during the cycle to prompt turning or rearranging the food.

Cooking in One Stage: To cook in one stage, press the POWER pad and select the desired power level (from P-HI for 100% power down to P-00 for 0% power) by pressing the POWER pad multiple times. Then, enter the cooking time using the number pads (up to 59 minutes 99 seconds) and press START. If no power level is selected, the oven will cook at full power. Lower power levels are recommended for delicate foods like cheese, milk, and slow-cooked meats.

Cooking in Two Stages: This feature allows for automatic defrosting followed by cooking. First, press the DEFROST pad and enter the defrosting time. Then, press the POWER pad to select the cooking power level, enter the cooking time, and press START. The oven will first complete the defrosting stage, signaling when food needs attention, and then automatically proceed to the cooking stage.

Kitchen Timer Mode: The KITCHEN TIMER pad can be used for three purposes:

  1. As a Minute Timer: Press KITCHEN TIMER, enter the desired time, and press START. The timer will count down, and three beeps will sound when it finishes.
  2. To Delay the Start of Cooking: Press KITCHEN TIMER, enter the delay time, then program the desired power level and cooking time, and press START. The oven will delay, then beep and start cooking.
  3. To Set a Holding Time: Program the desired cooking time, then press KITCHEN TIMER, enter the holding time, and press START. After cooking, the oven will beep and hold the food for the specified time.

Speedy Cook: Pressing the SPEEDY COOK pad initiates a 30-second reheat at 100% power. Repeated presses can extend the reheating time in 30-second increments, up to 5 minutes.

One Touch Cooking: This feature provides pre-programmed settings for common foods:

  • POPCORN: Press POPCORN once for a 3.5 oz bag. The oven automatically starts cooking after 1.5 seconds. Users are advised to use prepackaged microwave popcorn, pop only one bag at a time, and not leave the oven unattended.
  • FROZEN PIZZA: Press FROZEN PIZZA once for a 7 oz pizza or twice within 1.5 seconds for a 14 oz pizza. The oven starts cooking after 1.5 seconds. Only one frozen pizza made for microwave ovens should be cooked at a time.
  • BEVERAGE: Press BEVERAGE once for 1 cup, twice for 2 cups, or three times for 3 cups (200ml/cup). The oven starts cooking after 1.5 seconds.
  • DINNER PLATE: Press DINNER PLATE once for a 12 oz dinner plate or twice within 1.5 seconds for a 15 oz dinner plate. The oven starts cooking after 1.5 seconds.

Auto Cook: The AUTO COOK pad allows for cooking or reheating various foods by repeatedly pressing the pad to select a category (AC-1 to AC-5), each corresponding to a specific food type and weight (e.g., BREAD, SOUP, BAKED POTATO, FRESH VEGETABLE, FROZEN VEGETABLE).

Less/More: During one-touch cooking or regular cooking, the LESS/MORE pads can be used to adjust the cooking time. LESS/MORE adjusts one-touch cooking time in 10-second multiples and regular cooking time in 1-minute multiples, up to a maximum of 59 minutes 99 seconds.

Child Safety Lock: To prevent unintended operation, press and hold STOP/CLEAR for 3 seconds to activate the child safety lock. A beep sounds, and the LOCK indicator lights up. To deactivate, press and hold STOP/CLEAR again for 3 seconds.

Stopping Oven Operation: The oven can be stopped by pressing the STOP/CLEAR pad (retaining current settings for restart) or by opening the door (also retaining settings). To erase all instructions, press STOP/CLEAR twice.

Maintenance Features

Proper care and cleaning are essential for the longevity and safe operation of the microwave oven.

General Cleaning:

  • Always turn off the oven before cleaning.
  • The inside of the oven should be kept clean. Food spatters or spills on oven walls should be wiped with a damp cloth. Mild detergent can be used for stubborn dirt. Harsh detergents or abrasives are not recommended.
  • The outside surface should be cleaned with soap and water, rinsed, and dried with a soft cloth. Care should be taken to prevent water from seeping into ventilation openings.
  • If the control panel gets wet, clean it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh detergents or abrasives on the control panel.
  • Steam accumulation inside or around the door is normal under high humidity conditions and does not indicate a malfunction.

Glass Tray and Roller Guide:

  • The glass cooking tray should be removed for cleaning and can be washed in warm, sudsy water or a dishwasher.
  • The roller guide and oven cavity floor should be cleaned regularly to prevent excessive noise. Wipe the bottom surface with mild detergent water or window cleaner and dry. The roller guide can be washed in mild sudsy water.
  • The glass tray must always be in its proper position before operating the oven.
  • Do not cook food directly on the glass tray.
  • Allow the glass tray to cool before cleaning or placing it in water if it is hot.
  • Only use the specific glass tray provided with this oven.

Waveguide Cover:

  • Keep the waveguide cover clean at all times. Wipe the oven interior with a soft damp cloth after each use. Grease or fat left in the cavity can lead to overheating, smoke, or fire.

Utensil Test: To determine if a utensil is microwave-safe, place the empty utensil in the oven with one cup of water in a glass measure next to it. Heat on high for 1 minute. If the water is warm but the utensil is not, it is suitable for microwave cooking. If the utensil is warm, it is not suitable.

Microwave Utensils Guidelines:

  • Glass, Ceramic, and China: Ovenproof glass or ceramic dishes are generally safe. Avoid dishes with silver, gold, platinum, or other metal trim, as arcing may occur. Do not heat or cook in glass jars or bottles, or use delicate or stemmed glassware.
  • Plastics: Plastic dishes, cups, mugs, and bowls can be used for short periods. Avoid prolonged use to prevent distortion or melting. Plastic wrap can be used to cover dishes, ensuring it doesn't touch the food and is vented. Plastic cooking bags should be slit. Do not use wire twist-ties.
  • Paper: Paper cups, wax paper, napkins, paper towels, and plates can be used for short cooking. Avoid prolonged use to prevent burning. Do not use recycled paper products, as impurities may cause arcing.
  • Metal: Metal utensils should not be used in the oven as they reflect microwave energy, leading to uneven cooking, arcing, and potential damage to the oven.

Safety Precautions:

  • Never attempt to operate the oven with the door open or tamper with safety interlocks.
  • Do not place objects between the oven front face and the door, or allow residue to accumulate on sealing surfaces.
  • Do not operate a damaged oven, especially if the door, hinges, latches, or seals are compromised.
  • Only qualified service personnel should adjust or repair the oven.
  • Do not cover or block any openings.
  • Do not store or use the appliance outdoors or near water.
  • Do not immerse the cord or plug in water.
  • Keep the cord away from heated surfaces and ensure it does not hang over table edges.
  • Avoid overcooking food. Attend the appliance carefully when using combustible materials.
  • Remove wire twist-ties from bags before placing them in the oven.
  • If materials inside the oven ignite, keep the door closed, turn off the oven, and disconnect power.
  • Do not use the cavity for storage.
  • Do not heat corrosive chemicals or oil/fat for deep frying.
  • Do not use the microwave for home canning.
  • Always pierce foods with non-porous skins (e.g., potatoes, eggs, apples) before cooking.
  • Stir liquids before heating to prevent eruption.
  • Do not leave the oven unattended while popping corn. Use commercially prepared microwave popcorn and follow manufacturer instructions. Do not use brown paper bags or reheat unpopped kernels.
