Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the Daikin GPHM5 SEER2 M Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the installation, operation, and maintenance of the GPHM5 15.2 SEER2 "M" Series Heat Pump Units (2-4 Ton), which are self-contained packaged units designed for outdoor use only. These units are available in cooling capacities of 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4 nominal tons.

Function Description

The GPHM5 SEER2 M-Series heat pumps are designed to provide both heating and cooling for residential applications, primarily manufactured or modular homes with existing high-static ductwork. They can also be converted to accommodate plenums for normal or low-static applications. The units operate as a complete refrigerating system, including a compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil with flowrator, indoor blower, condenser fan, and all necessary internal electrical wiring. For heat pump models, a reversing valve, solenoid, defrost thermostat, and control with loss of charge protection are also included. The system is factory-evacuated, charged, and performance tested.

Cooling Cycle: When in cooling mode, the heat pump operates like a standard air conditioner, extracting heat from the indoor air and expelling it outdoors.

Heating Cycle: In heating mode, the heat pump reverses the refrigerant flow. Hot discharge vapor from the compressor is directed to the indoor coil (which acts as a condenser), where heat is released to the indoor air. The vapor then condenses to liquid, flows through the expansion device to the outdoor coil (acting as an evaporator), where it evaporates by absorbing heat from the outdoor air, and returns to the compressor.

Defrost Control: Since the outdoor coil can accumulate frost in heating mode when temperatures are below freezing, the unit incorporates a defrost control. This control reverses the heat pump to cooling mode, stops the outdoor fan, and energizes supplementary heaters to melt frost accumulation on the outdoor coil. Defrost timing periods (30, 60, or 90 minutes) can be selected.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Cooling Capacities: 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4 nominal tons.
  • Electrical Characteristics: The units are designed for 208/230V operation. The transformer is factory-connected for 230V; for 208V operation, the transformer primary lead must be reconnected as shown in the wiring diagram.
  • Refrigerant: Type and amount are indicated on the rating plate.
  • Optional Heat Kits: Field-installed heat kits are available in 5, 8, 10, 15, and 20 kW. A separate power supply is required for these kits.
  • Indoor Blower Motor: Units are equipped with ECM motors, which are constant torque motors with very low power consumption. Blower speed can be adjusted.
  • Outdoor Thermostat (Optional): Kit OTHPPKG-01 is an optional accessory, pre-set at 37°F, used to prevent full electric heater operation at varying outdoor ambient temperatures (0°F to 45°F). It is required for 2-Ton heat pumps.
  • Thermostat Compatibility: GPHM5 units require thermostats with two-stage heat/cool and optional auxiliary heat control.
  • Clearances: Minimum 12" clearance on all air inlet sides, 36" minimum for service access to the compressor compartment and controls. For units under an overhang, a minimum of 48" clearance is required, with provisions to deflect warm discharge air.
  • Ductwork: Can be easily converted from horizontal to down discharge airflow delivery.

Usage Features

  • Installation Flexibility: Designed for outdoor use, suitable for manufactured or modular homes. Can be adapted for high-static, normal, or low-static duct applications.
  • Self-Contained Design: Only requires connections for supply and return ducts, line and low voltage wiring, and drain connection.
  • Performance: Rated performance is achieved after 20 hours of operation and delivered at the specified airflow.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides detailed troubleshooting charts for various symptoms, including high/low head pressure, unit not running, compressor issues, and insufficient cooling.
  • Reversing Valve: The reversing valve coil is activated by the thermostat in cooling mode and during defrost, positioning the pilot valve for cooling operation.

Maintenance Features

  • Bi-Annual Inspection: A bi-annual maintenance checkup by a qualified service agency is strongly recommended before the heating and cooling seasons.
  • Filter Maintenance: Return air filters must be used and checked every two months. Dirty filters can lead to loss of efficiency, equipment damage, and fire. Disposable filters should be replaced, and reusable filters cleaned with warm water, dried, and sprayed with adhesive.
  • Coil Cleaning: Condenser and evaporator coils should be kept clean. Aluminum indoor coils can be flushed with water or cleaned with approved products listed in technical publication TP-109.
  • Motor Lubrication: Bearings on the air circulating blower motor and condenser motor are permanently lubricated and require no further lubrication.
  • Compressor: The compressor motor is hermetically sealed and does not require additional oiling.
  • Wiring Inspection: Regular checks for damaged wires and tight electrical connections are recommended.
  • Physical Support: The unit's physical support should be sound, without sagging, cracks, or gaps.
  • Clearance Maintenance: Ensure the unit is free from obstructions on the sides and top to maintain proper airflow.
  • Start-Up Checklist: A comprehensive checklist is provided for initial start-up, covering electrical, static pressure, temperature, gas pressure, and additional checks.
  • Refrigerant Charge Check: Guidelines are provided for checking superheat and subcooling to ensure the refrigerant charge is within limits, with specific instructions for units with fixed orifice devices and expansion valves (TXV). Superheat adjustments should only be made after indoor ambient conditions have stabilized (up to 24 hours).
