Remove
the
nuts
retaining
the
differential
carrier
assembly
to
the
axle
casing
and
withdraw
the
assembly
Installation
is
a
reversal
of
the
removal
procedure
but
it
will
be
necessary
to
bleed
the
brake
hydraulic
system
TO
DISMANTLE
NOTE
Before
dismantling
the
assembly
carry
out
the
following
checks
The
information
gained
from
the
checks
will
prove
helpful
when
assembling
the
unit
a
Check
the
tooth
contaci
of
th
ctownwheel
and
pinion
by
applying
a
thin
coating
of
red
lead
and
engine
oil
to
both
sides
ofSix
or
eight
of
the
crownwheej
teeth
b
Roiate
the
pinion
both
ways
placing
a bar
between
the
differential
case
and
the
carrier
tn
apply
a
load
to
the
gear
teeth
and
so
obtain
a
good
marking
If
the
pinion height
bearing
pre
load
a
d
backlash
are
correct
the
area
of
contact
should
be
as
shown
in
the
teeth
marking
illustration
c
The
margin
ab6
ve
and
below
the
area
of
contaci
should
be
the
same
and
the
contact
margin
should
run
approximately
three
quarters
of
the
tooth
length
check
the
patterps
on
both
sides
of
the
tooth
d
Moont
a
dial
indicator
gauge
on
to
the
differential
carrier
housing
so
that
the
plunger
is
in
contact
with
and
at
right
angles
to
the
heel
of
a
crownwheel
tooth
then
zero
the
dial
gaoge
e
Hold the
pinion
firmly
and
rock
the
crownwheel
back
and
forth
to
check
the
backlash
on
the
dial
gauge
Check
the backlash
at
approximately
three
positions
around
the
crownwheel
Backlash
is
correct
when
within
the
imits
of
0
1
0
0
15
mm
0

Having
completed
the
foregoing
checks
dismantle
the
assemblv
as
follows

Remove
the
carrier
bearing
cap
nuts
and
detach
the
caps
Check
that
the
caps
are
marked
in
relation
to
he
carrier
to
ensure
installation
in
their
original positions

pinion
If
however
replacement
of
one
or
both
of
the
above
is
required
continue
dismantling
as
follows

Using
a
suitable
puller
or
a
press
remove
the
rear
taper
bearing
inner
cone
assembly
from
the
pinion
8
Draw
or
press
the
taper
bearing
outer
cones
from
the
carrier
takirig
particular
note
of
the
pinion height
