Overview

The Davey QB Series Spa Pool Pump is a high-quality product designed for circulating swimming pool and spa water, ensuring reliable and efficient performance. This pump is specifically engineered to meet the conditions set out in the Australian Standard for swimming pool water quality (AS 3633) or equivalent. It is not intended for other purposes without prior consultation with a Davey Dealer or Customer Service Centre.

Function Description

The primary function of the Davey QB Series pump is to circulate water in spa pools and swimming pools. It consists of a matched motor and a "pumping end" that work together to provide dependable operation and deliver maximum water flow. The pump is designed to maintain water quality by continuously moving and filtering the water, which is crucial for hygiene and the effective distribution of sanitizing agents.

Usage Features

Installation and Location:

The pump should be installed in a safe, dry, and well-drained environment, high enough to prevent flooding. It is recommended to locate the pump as close to the water source as practicable to optimize performance. The installer or owner is responsible for ensuring the pump's nameplate is easily readable and accessible for service. Adequate drainage around the pump enclosure is essential in case of leakage.

Pipe Connection:

The QB Series pumps are supplied with barrel unions designed to connect to 50mm PVC pipes. The pipe should fit inside the union tail. Using pipes smaller than 50mm PVC pressure pipe is not recommended. Suction piping must be free from air leaks, humps, and hollows to prevent suction difficulties. Both suction and discharge pipes should have a constant, gentle slope of at least 2% to facilitate proper air purging. Barrel unions should be hand-tightened without the need for sealants, glues, or silicones. If the pump and filter are located below pool water level, isolating valves must be fitted in the pipe between the pump and the skimmer box or suction inlet, and in the return pipe from the filter to the pool.

Power Connection:

Davey QB Series pumps are suitable for connection to a nominal 240 volt 50Hz power supply and come equipped with a flex lead and a 3-pin plug or AMP plug for connection to a Davey Spa controller. If a power outlet is not available within 3 meters of the pump, a 3-pin power point in a safe, dry place may need to be installed by an electrician. Extension cords are considered unsafe around pools or spas and should be avoided. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the dealer or manufacturer using genuine Davey spares. The pump is double insulated to the water circuit, and an equipotential bonding point is provided if required by local electrical wiring standards. All installations should be fitted with earth leakage or residual current protection devices for safety. Power connections and wiring must be carried out by an authorized electrician, adhering to AS3000 wiring rules or local wiring standards. An easily accessible electrical isolation switch should be located to allow the pump to be switched off in an emergency.

Starting the Pump:

To ensure efficient operation and prevent damage, a free flow of water to and from the pump is critical. Before starting, ensure all pipework is correctly sealed, the pool/spa water level is at the correct height, and all appropriate valves are open, with no obstructions preventing water flow. The pump must be primed by ensuring it is below the spa pool's water level. Connect the pump to the power supply or spa controller and switch it on. Allow the pump to run to expel any trapped air. If a strong flow of water is not established within one minute, switch off the pump and repeat the priming procedure.

Pump Operation:

The water level of the spa or spa pool should always be maintained at least to the spa jets, ensuring the pump always contains water. It is crucial never to run the pump dry, as this can damage mechanical seals, leading to leakage and flooding, and such damage is not covered under warranty.

Troubleshooting:

  • No water flow or reduced flow: Check if the pump is primed, if there are air leaks in the suction piping (indicated by air bubbles in the return water), if the pump shaft seal is leaking (water on the ground), if the pump can't draw water from the pool (check valve positions and water level), or if there's a blockage in the piping or pump.
  • Pump does not operate: Verify power connection (controller touchpad, AMP socket, fuses, main switch), check for tripped automatic overload (the motor has an in-built thermal overload that will reset after cooling; identify and rectify the cause), check for blockages preventing rotation, or if the motor is burnt out (evident by a burning smell, requiring replacement). If issues persist, contact the supplier or an Authorized Davey Pool Equipment Service Centre.

Removal from Pipework:

If removal is necessary, switch off power and unplug the pump. If hardwired, a qualified electrician must remove the wiring. Close water valves on the pool return and pump inlet. Remove discharge and suction barrel unions, ensuring o-rings are not lost. Move pipework with unions attached to clear the pump. When making inquiries, always quote the model number from the nameplate.

Weather Protection:

It is recommended that the pump be protected from the weather to prolong its lifespan and maintain performance.

Safety Warnings:

  • Hazardous Suction: Do not block water entry into the filtration system with any part of your body, as the pressure can cause severe injury or death. Turn off the pump immediately if someone becomes trapped. Do not use or operate swimming pools, spas, or spa baths if a suction cover is broken, missing, or loose. Two suction covers and inlets must be provided for every pump to prevent suction entrapment.
  • Chemicals: Do not add chemicals directly to the pool skimmer or suction, as undiluted chemicals can damage the pump and filter and void the warranty.
  • Children: This appliance can be used by children aged 8 years and above, and persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities or lack of experience, if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning safe use and understand the hazards. Children should not play with the appliance. Cleaning and user maintenance should not be performed by children without supervision.

Maintenance Features

Routine Maintenance Tasks:

To maximize the life of your pool equipment and ensure personal safety, a weekly checklist should be followed, always turning the pump off first:

  • Pressure Gauges: Ensure any pressure gauges are in working condition and that the operating pressure is within specified limits.
  • Suction Inlets and Main Drain: Verify that each suction inlet and main drain has a securely attached cover in safe working condition.
  • Skimmer Covers: Ensure all skimmer covers are securely attached and in safe working condition. These should be replaced every 3 to 4 years.
  • Debris Removal: Remove any obstructions or debris from the main drain cover.
  • Baskets and Lint Pots: Ensure skimmer baskets and any pump hair and lint pots are free of leaves and debris at least once a week.
  • Clearance: Remove obstructions and combustibles from around the pump motor.
  • Wiring: Ensure all wiring connections are clean and that all wiring and electrical equipment are in good condition. Damaged wiring must be repaired or replaced by a qualified electrician as soon as discovered.
  • Water Quality: Check water balance and sanitiser levels at your local pool shop.

Water Quality Maintenance:

Maintaining balanced water chemistry is crucial for the longevity of your spa pool pump. The pump is designed for use with pool and spa water balanced according to the Langelier Saturation Index, with a pH level between 7.2 and 7.8, and regularly treated with a chlorine sanitizing agent not exceeding 3PPM. Regular water testing by a local pool shop is recommended.

Failure to undertake regular maintenance may cause damage not covered by warranty. Running the pump with no water (dry running) can damage mechanical seals, leading to leakage and flooding, and this damage is not covered under warranty.
