Overview

The DeVilbiss DAD-500 (130026) Desiccant Air Drying System is a point-of-use system designed to remove dirt, water, oil, and water vapor from compressed air. It comprises a filter separator, coalescing filter, desiccant dryer, air regulator, and a main air supply shut-off valve.

Function Description:

The DAD-500 system ensures clean and dry air for various applications. It operates in stages:

  1. Water Separator Filter (13-0041 / HAF-502): This first stage removes dirt, pipe scale, and most liquid aerosol particles down to 5 microns. It has an automatic drain to expel collected liquids.
  2. Oil Coalescing Filter (HAF-505): The second stage further refines the air by removing oil, dirt, pipe scale, and liquid aerosol particles down to 0.01 micron. It also features an automatic mechanical drain.
  3. Desiccant Dryer: This is the core drying component, removing water vapor from the air. The desiccant material changes color (pink or white) when saturated, indicating the need for replacement.
  4. Air Regulator (HAR-507): This component receives air at main line pressure and delivers it at a desired, lower regulated pressure, allowing users to adjust the output pressure for their specific tools or spray guns.
  5. Main Air Supply Shut Off Valve (VA-595): This valve allows for complete isolation of the system for maintenance or when not in use.

Usage Features:

The DAD-500 is designed for easy installation and operation. It should be installed as close as possible to the point of use, with air flow directed as indicated by arrows on the filters. Minimum 1/2" NPT piping is recommended to avoid restricting air flow. The system includes vinyl tubing for automatic drains, which should be placed into appropriate receptacles to prevent kinking. The air regulator allows for precise pressure adjustment. Users are warned against using the product with hazardous gases or liquids other than compressed air, as this constitutes a misapplication and voids the warranty. Sudden depressurization cycles exceeding 20 PSIG should be avoided, as they can damage pressure gauges, filters, and cause desiccant "dusting." To mitigate this, a "slow closing solenoid valve" or an air adjusting valve at the solenoids outlet can be installed.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity.

  • Drainage: Check the system at least once per shift for proper drainage and water in the drain tubing.
  • Desiccant Replacement: Replace the desiccant (DAD-1) when the humidity indicator (DAD-400) changes to a pink or white color. This involves removing the pipe plug at the bottom of the tank, draining the material, and refilling with new desiccant. PTFE tape should be used on pipe plug threads to facilitate future removal.
  • Humidity Indicator Paper: The paper inside the DAD-400 humidity indicator should be replaced when the desiccant is changed.
  • Filter Element Cleaning/Replacement (HAF-502): The water separator filter element (HAF-6) should be checked and cleaned/replaced every 3-6 months, depending on air quality and usage. Cleaning involves blowing off with a duster gun.
  • Coalescing Element Replacement (HAF-505): The coalescing element (HAF-28) should be changed when the filter change indicator turns red or every 12 to 18 months.
  • Plastic Bowls: Inspect plastic bowls for cracks, crazing, or deterioration. Clean bowls with a clean, dry cloth only; avoid solvents, paints, and chemicals that can cause bowl failure. Always ensure the metal bowl guard is installed before placing the unit in service.
  • Air Regulator (HAR-507): Periodically remove the bottom plug and clean the valve seat and body with denatured alcohol, then blow out with compressed air. If erratic operation persists, a Repair Kit (KK-4977) containing replacement internal components is available.
  • Automatic Drain (HAF-18): Monitor the automatic drain for proper operation. If water enters the float or the drain mechanism sticks, it may not function correctly. If it fails, the entire automatic drain unit should be replaced. Disassembly instructions are provided for cleaning the float and ensuring the rubber seal is in place.
  • In-Tank Filters (DAD-8): These filters, located between the coalescing filter and the desiccant tank inlet, and between the air regulator and the desiccant tank, should be replaced if damaged or plugged. This involves disassembling parts of the system and carefully installing the new filter.
  • Tune-Up Kit: A Desiccant Tune-Up Kit (DAD-600) is available for complete reconditioning of the desiccant air station, including DAD-1, DAD-3, and HAF-6.

Before any maintenance, always ensure the main air supply shut-off valve is closed and all residual air pressure is bled from the system.
