(1) Remove antenna from package and adjust elements to proper position. You will nd a small mark on the center of each
element to aid in its positioning. Tighten each wingnut after verifying proper positioning.
(2) Weatherproong connections. As coaxial cables tend to absorb moisture through their connectors, it is recommended
that the connector be sealed. There are several products available for this purpose, including a good grade of electrical type
or a rubber compound tape.

Do you have a question about the Diamond Antenna A144S10 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The document describes the Diamond 2 Meter Beam Antennas, specifically models A144S5 and A144S10, which are 2-meter Yagi antennas. These antennas are designed for amateur radio use within the 144-148 MHz frequency range.

Function Description:

The Diamond 2 Meter Beam Antennas are designed to transmit and receive radio signals in the 2-meter band (144-148 MHz). They are directional antennas, meaning they focus radio energy in a specific direction, which helps improve signal strength and reduce interference compared to omnidirectional antennas. The A144S5 is a 5-element antenna, while the A144S10 is a 10-element antenna, with the latter offering higher gain and a narrower beamwidth for more focused communication. They are suitable for both vertical and horizontal polarization, with vertical polarization often preferred for FM operation. The antennas can also be stacked to further enhance performance.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly and Installation: The antennas are designed for easy assembly and installation. They come with pre-marked elements for center alignment. The document includes diagrams for antenna assembly, showing how elements are secured to the boom and how the driven element connects to the coaxial cable.
  • Polarization Options: The A144S5 can be installed for either vertical or horizontal polarization.
    • Vertical Polarization (preferred for FM): When mounting to a vertical support or pole at the boom center, a non-metallic support (fiberglass or waterproofed hardwood extension) is recommended to minimize interference. End mounting is also an option, allowing the coax cable to run along the boom and down the support, away from metal in the vertical plane. A bracket can be used to position the beam away from the vertical support.
    • Horizontal Mounting: Easily accomplished with center boom mounting to a vertical support.
  • Stacking Beams: Two beams can be phased together using a special coax phasing section (75 ohm coaxial cable and T-connector) approximately 2140 mm / 84 inches long. A beam separation of approximately 40”-48" is recommended for optimal performance. When stacking, both antennas should be mounted to the stacking boom in the same position, and the cable connection must enter each from the same side.
  • Weatherproofing: Coaxial cables and connections should be sealed to prevent moisture from entering, which can degrade performance. Electrical tape or a rubber compound tape is recommended for sealing connections.

Maintenance Features:

  • Element Alignment: It is important to remove the antenna from its package and adjust elements to their proper position. A small mark on the center of each element aids in alignment. Tighten wingnuts after verifying proper positioning.
  • Connection Sealing: All coaxial cables and connections must be sealed to absorb moisture and prevent degradation of electrical tape or rubber compound tape. This is crucial for long-term performance and to prevent water ingress that could affect the antenna's functionality.
  • Minimizing Metal Interference: When mounting, especially for vertical polarization, efforts should be made to minimize the effects of metal in the vertical plane. Using non-metallic supports or positioning the beam away from metal supports with a bracket helps maintain optimal performance. Running coax away from the beam at right angles or off the reflector end also helps reduce interference.
