The Doran DS8150 is a chair scale designed for weighing patients, offering a blend of durability, precision, and user-friendly features. As an ISO9001 registered product, it is built to high-quality standards, ensuring reliable and long-lasting service.
Function Description:
The primary function of the DS8150 chair scale is to accurately measure the weight of patients. It also includes a Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation feature, allowing healthcare professionals to assess a patient's weight in relation to their height. The scale is designed for ease of use in medical environments, with clear display indications and simple pushbutton controls. It supports both initial weighing and reweighing processes without requiring the patient to leave the chair, enhancing efficiency and patient comfort. The scale's design emphasizes stability and accuracy, even with patients who may experience motion during the weighing process, through its "Stable Hold" and "Average Hold" features.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Chair Dimensions: 36" L x 27" W x 44" H
- Indicator Dimensions: 8" L x 6.5" W x 2.3" H
- Power: 12VDC AC Adapter (Negative Center) is standard. Optional power is provided by 6 AA Alkaline Batteries, capable of over 85,000 weighments with standard Automatic Shutoff Timer settings.
- Displayed Units: The scale can display weight in pounds (lb) and kilograms (kg). Height units for BMI calculation can be displayed in inches (in) or centimeters (cm).
- Capacity: 550 x 0.2 lb or 250 x 0.1 kg. This indicates a maximum capacity of 550 pounds with a readability of 0.2 pounds, or 250 kilograms with a readability of 0.1 kilograms.
- Construction: The scale is constructed from painted mild steel and plastic housing, providing a robust and durable structure suitable for medical settings.
- Options: Optional RS-232 Communication cable and USB Communication cable are available for data transfer and connectivity.
Usage Features:
- Power On/Off: The scale is turned on by pressing the "Zero" button. To turn it off, the "Zero" button must be pressed and held for 3 seconds. An adjustable Automatic Shutoff Timer is included to conserve battery life when the scale is not in use.
- Zero Operation: Pressing the "Zero" button resets the scale to zero weight. This is useful for taring out any unwanted weight on the chair before weighing a patient. If an item is removed after zeroing, the stable negative weight will automatically be zeroed out after 3 seconds.
- Units Selection: The "Units" button allows toggling between pounds (lb) and kilograms (kg) for weight display. This button can be locked or unlocked by pressing and holding it for 5 seconds, indicated by "Lon" or "Loff" messages.
- Weighing a Patient:
- Lock all four wheels on the chair scale for stability.
- Turn on the indicator using the "Zero" button.
- The indicator performs a startup zero and displays "0.0".
- Place the patient on the chair.
- The display will show dashes for 3-5 seconds, then the active weight.
- Once the patient's weight is captured, the indicator will beep (if enabled) and hold the weight on the display until the scale automatically shuts off.
- BMI Operation:
- With the "Hold" weight displayed, press the "BMI" button to enter the patient's height.
- Height entry starts at a default value (e.g., 5: 6.0 for 5 feet 6 inches or 168.0 for 168 centimeters).
- Use the "▲" or "▼" buttons to adjust the height value.
- The "Units" button can be used to toggle between inches and centimeters for height entry.
- Press the "BMI" button again to enter the value and exit. A menu timer will exit this mode if no buttons are pressed within 30 seconds.
- Reweigh Operation: To reinitiate the weighing process without the patient leaving the chair, press the "Reweigh" button. The display will show dashes for 3-5 seconds, then the active weight, and finally hold the captured weight.
- Display Annunciators:
- MOTION: Indicates when the scale senses motion. A stable reading is displayed once motion ceases.
- STABLE HOLD: Indicates an accurate and stable weight has been achieved and held. Weights below 4.5 pounds will not be held.
- AVERAGE HOLD: Indicates that the displayed weight is an average of several readings due to excessive motion. This feature speeds up weighing for restless patients. The Average Hold weight may be slightly less accurate than a Stable Hold weight but minimizes deviation. Weights below 4.5 pounds will not be held. The time for Average Hold to engage is configurable via the Average Aperture parameter.
- Battery Indicator: Displays the remaining battery life. A low battery status is also indicated by two beeps when a weight is held (if Parameter BH is set to on). This indicator is disabled when the scale is powered by its wall transformer.
- Software Information Display: Pressing and holding the "Reweigh" button for 3 seconds performs a display test, shows the software number ("Su179") and revision ("r 2.9" or higher), and then enters "Switch test mode" ("StESt"). After 10 seconds of no switch presses, the scale runs a Display Segment test before returning to normal weighing operation.
Maintenance Features:
- Care & Cleaning:
- Hand clean the chair and indicator with a moist cloth.
- Use only a mild detergent for cleaning.
- Avoid getting water inside the indicator.
- Do not use strong solvents or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the touch panel or other plastic parts.
- Do not immerse the scale in liquids.
- Examine the scale periodically for damage and wear before use.
- Battery Replacement: The indicator uses six AA alkaline batteries. The battery compartment is located on the backside of the indicator. To replace batteries, press the locking tab up to release the cover, remove old batteries, install new ones with correct orientation, and reattach the cover.
- Troubleshooting: The manual provides a general problem resolution guide for common issues such as:
- Weight reading not repeating or scale not returning to zero: Check for objects touching the scale or interfering with the seat.
- Scale overloads before capacity: Verify scale calibration.
- Scale not zeroing: Ensure the scale is stable (Motion annunciator off) before pressing "Zero".
- Incorrect weight readings: Verify calibration with a test weight.
- Scale drifts off zero: Ensure the chair is on a flat surface with all wheels touching the floor, and check for air currents or vibration.
- Scale shuts off or won't turn on: Press "Zero" button, check battery installation, confirm AC adapter is plugged into a functioning outlet, and verify the connector at the rear of the indicator is properly installed.
The DS8150 is designed to be a reliable and essential tool in healthcare settings, providing accurate and efficient patient weighing with features that enhance both user and patient experience.
