Overview

The Dräger Zeus® Breathing System is a sophisticated medical device designed for patient ventilation, offering a range of features for both its operation and maintenance. This system is engineered to provide reliable respiratory support, with a focus on ease of use, comprehensive reprocessing capabilities, and patient safety.

Function Description

At its core, the Dräger Zeus® Breathing System facilitates the delivery of breathing gases to a patient and the removal of exhaled gases. It comprises several interconnected components that work in unison to manage the breathing circuit. Key functional elements include inspiration and expiration ports, which control the flow of gases into and out of the patient's lungs, and flow sensors that monitor the gas dynamics within the system. The CLIC adapter, an optional but integral part, allows for the secure connection of various components and plays a role in the system's cleaning process. The APL (Adjustable Pressure Limiting) valve is crucial for regulating the pressure within the breathing circuit, ensuring patient safety by preventing excessive pressure buildup. The system's design allows for precise control over ventilation parameters, making it suitable for a wide range of clinical applications where respiratory support is required.

Usage Features

The Dräger Zeus® Breathing System is designed with user-friendliness in mind, particularly concerning its assembly and disassembly for operational readiness and maintenance. The process of setting up the system for use involves straightforward steps. For instance, the APL valve is screwed into place, indicating a clear and intuitive connection point. When preparing the system, the upper part is carefully set onto the lower part, ensuring proper alignment and connection of the internal components. This modular design simplifies the initial setup and allows for quick configuration.

During operation, the system provides clear indications for its various components. The inspiration and expiration ports are designed for easy insertion and tightening, ensuring a secure and leak-free connection within the breathing circuit. The flow sensors, critical for monitoring gas flow, are also inserted with ease, contributing to the system's overall functionality. The CLIC adapter, when used, is designed to close until it snaps, providing tactile feedback that confirms a secure connection. This attention to detail in the design of connections and interfaces enhances the user experience and minimizes the potential for errors during setup and operation.

Maintenance Features

The Dräger Zeus® Breathing System is engineered for comprehensive reprocessing, ensuring hygiene and patient safety across multiple uses. The manual provides detailed instructions for both disassembly and assembly, which are fundamental to effective cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.

Disassembly for Maintenance:

The disassembly process is structured to allow access to all critical components for thorough cleaning. It begins with the unscrewing of the CLIC adapter, if present, which is a key step in opening the system. The cleaning disc is then inserted into the adapter, and the adapter is closed until it snaps, indicating its readiness for a cleaning cycle. Subsequently, the cleaning disc is removed, and the adapter is closed again, preparing it for further reprocessing steps.

The inspiration and expiration ports are designed to be easily loosened and pulled out, providing access to their internal structures and the surrounding areas for cleaning. The flow sensors, vital for accurate measurements, can also be readily removed. The system incorporates screws that need to be turned counterclockwise about 120° using a key to facilitate the removal of certain components, demonstrating a thoughtful design for maintenance access. The upper part of the breathing system can be lifted off, exposing the internal mechanisms for detailed cleaning and inspection. Finally, the APL valve is designed to be screwed off, completing the disassembly process and allowing for individual component reprocessing.

Reprocessing Guidelines:

The manual outlines specific guidelines for manual cleaning and disinfection, machine cleaning and disinfection, and sterilization.

  • Manual Cleaning and Disinfection: Components are positioned to ensure all interior spaces and surfaces are completely flushed, allowing water to drain off freely. For flow sensors, specific disinfectants listed in their respective instructions for use are recommended.
  • Machine Cleaning and Disinfection: The recommendation is to position components so that all interior spaces and surfaces are completely flushed, and water can drain off freely, optimizing the effectiveness of machine-based cleaning.
  • Sterilization: It is explicitly stated that SpiroLife® flow sensors are not suitable for plasma or radiation sterilization, highlighting critical limitations for specific components.

Assembly After Maintenance:

The assembly process reverses the disassembly steps, ensuring the system is correctly reconfigured for use. This includes screwing in the APL valve, inserting the flow sensors, and inserting and tightening the inspiration and expiration ports. The screws are turned clockwise about 120° to secure components. The CLIC adapter is screwed back into place, completing the reassembly.

Visual Check:

After reprocessing, a visual check of the components, particularly the inspiration and expiration grills, is crucial. If any damage is observed, especially to the grills, contact with DrägerService® is recommended, emphasizing the importance of maintaining component integrity for safe operation.

The Dräger Zeus® Breathing System's design prioritizes both operational efficiency and comprehensive maintenance, ensuring its reliability and longevity in clinical environments.
