This document is a user manual for the Drive Homecare Bed, specifically models #15230 and #15235, which are available in both full electric and semi-electric low bed configurations. The manual provides detailed instructions for assembly, operation, maintenance, and safety.
Function Description
The Drive Homecare Bed is designed to provide adjustable support for users in a homecare setting. It allows for the adjustment of the head and foot sections, as well as the overall bed height, to enhance user comfort and facilitate care. The full electric model offers motorized adjustments for all sections, while the semi-electric model uses a motor for head and foot adjustments and a manual crank for height adjustment.
Important Technical Specifications
- Models: 15230 (Full Electric) & 15235 (Semi-Electric)
- Weight Limit: 450 LBS.
- Power Source: The motor comes with a pendant hand control. A 9V backup battery (not provided) can be installed for emergency power.
- Adjustments:
- Full Electric: Motorized adjustment for head, foot, and overall bed height (Hi/Lo).
- Semi-Electric: Motorized adjustment for head and foot sections, manual crank for overall bed height (Hi/Lo).
Usage Features
- Assembly: The manual provides step-by-step instructions for assembling the head and foot sections, attaching the spring fabric, installing the motor, and attaching the bed ends.
- Head and Foot Assembly: Involves laying sections on their sides, sliding them together until hooks catch rivets, and then straightening them.
- Spring Fabric Attachment: Foot fabric spring clips attach to the head fabric.
- Motor Installation: The motor is embossed with head and foot symbols to ensure correct orientation. Side caps must be removed, a 9V backup battery installed, and the motor snapped onto the cams. Side caps are then reinstalled, ensuring grooves align.
- Bed End Attachment: The foot bed end is positioned close to the bed, lifted, tilted, and engaged with the lower rivet and corner lock. Safety pins are then installed as latches. The process is repeated for the head bed end in full electric and semi-electric models.
- Hi/Lo Rod Assembly (Full Electric and Semi-Electric): The hi/lo rod assembly connects the gearboxes at the foot and head ends, mounting onto gearbox shaft pins.
- Operation (Semi-Electric Bed Only): The bed height (Hi/Lo) is adjusted using a crank located at the center foot of the bed.
- Pendant Hand Control: The motor comes from the factory with the pendant hand control plugged into it, allowing for motorized adjustments.
Maintenance Features
Drive Medical recommends conducting maintenance and cleaning procedures between users and at least once every three (3) years.
- Electronics Checks:
- Verify all controls (foot, head, Hi/Lo) function properly.
- Inspect all cables (power cord, pendant hand control cord) for damage or fraying.
- Ensure all plugs are fully inserted and attached.
- Confirm all wires are routed and attached properly to avoid interference with moving parts.
- Bed Frame and Sleeping Surface Checks:
- Visually inspect all welds on the head section, foot section, and main frame.
- Check joints between sleeping surface sections for loose fasteners.
- Cleaning:
- Clean all powder-coated metal parts with mild detergent and warm water.
- Periodically raise the head and foot sections to remove dust from the frame.
- Periodically remove the mattress and clean the mattress deck.
- Lubrication and Mechanical Checks:
- Lubricate all caster roller and swivel bearings with light machine oil.
- Check all bolts and tighten as needed.
Safety Warnings and Cautions
The manual includes a comprehensive "WARNING / CAUTION SUMMARY" to ensure safe operation:
- Moving Parts: Keep hands and feet clear of all moving parts.
- Children: Do not allow small children on or near the bed during operation. Do not allow this device to be operated by small children.
- Entrapment: When operating the Hi/Lo, knee, or back function, ensure the individual is properly confined within the bed's confines. Do not let any extremities protrude over the side or between the bed rails when performing any functions.
- Side Rails: Do not use unauthorized side rails. Install side rails per manufacturer's instructions.
- Labels: WARNING/CAUTION labels applied to the bed outline hazards or unsafe practices that could result in personal injury and/or property damage.
- Cords: Pendant hand control cord must be routed and secured properly to ensure it does not become entangled and eventually severed during use. Make sure electric cords do not get tangled around the bed, side rails, or legs during normal operation.
- Tubing: When using nasal or masked type administering equipment, oxygen or air tubing must be routed and secured properly to ensure that tubing does not become entangled and eventually severed during normal operation of the bed.
- Frame Rivets: Before operating, ensure that the bed frame rivets are properly seated in the bed end hooks; otherwise, injury or damage may result.
- Obstructions: Keep all moving parts free of obstructions (i.e., blankets/sheets, heating blankets/pads, tubing, wiring, and other types of products).
- Knee Elevation (Assembly): While balancing the frame, do not elevate the knee too far, or the linkage may over-extend and lock. If linkage locks, manually elevate the knee to straighten out the linkage and push the large linkage plate toward the foot of the bed.
- Assembly Completion (Assembly): Ensure that head and foot sections and spring fabric are assembled as described before continuing with bed assembly.
- Motor Installation (Assembly): Assemble the motor on the bed as follows; incorrect installation could cause the bed to move in unexpected ways. The motor can be installed backward. The motor is embossed with head and foot symbols.
- Motor Cord (Full Electric Bed Only): Do not tie the hi/lo motor cord to the movable knee section crosstube.
Warranty
- Frame: Lifetime warranty.
- Components: Two-year warranty on all components.
- Defective Items: During the warranty period, defective items will be repaired or replaced at Drive's option at no charge.
