Overview

The Drummond 3/4 HP High Output Transfer Pump (Item 58033) is a robust and efficient device designed for general-purpose water transfer and removal. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for its safe operation, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.

Function Description:

The primary function of this pump is to transfer clear water. It is suitable for various applications such as household water transfer, farming, and plumbing tasks. The pump is designed to move water from one location to another efficiently. It is explicitly stated that the pump should only be used with water and not with caustic fluids, abrasive materials, fuels, cleaning fluids, or other chemical products. It is also not intended for continuous run applications like fountain/pond water features or for removing water from swimming pools, spas, septic, or sewage systems. The pump must be protected from frost and running dry to prevent damage.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Rating: 120VAC / 60Hz / 9.6A
  • Power Cord Length: 10 feet
  • Maximum Flow @ 0' Head: 2500 Gallons Per Hour (GPH)
  • Maximum Head Lift @ 0 Flow: 100 feet
  • Discharge Port: 1" NPT
  • Fluid Type: Designed for use with water only, with a maximum temperature of 95°F (35°C).

Usage Features:

The pump is designed for ease of installation and operation. It must be connected to a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected plug, which should be installed according to regulations and have a supply voltage of 120 VAC at 60 Hz. This grounding-type attachment plug is crucial for reducing the risk of electric shock. The electrical connections must be protected from moisture, and if there is a risk of flooding, they should be elevated to higher ground.

Installation involves attaching hoses to the pump's intake and discharge ports. The pump should be positioned on a solid surface, ensuring both hoses are free from kinks. The unused end of the intake hose is placed in the water to be transferred, while the discharge hose directs the water at least 3 feet away from the source. The pump can be installed in a stationary position using either a fixed pipeline or a flexible hose pipe. It should be suspended from its handle or placed at the bottom of the basin, not suspended by its delivery pipe or power cord. To ensure proper function, the bottom of the basin should be kept free from sludge and dirt. Regular start-up tests are recommended to ensure the pump starts as required, especially if the water level sinks too low, which could cause sludge to dry out and prevent the pump from starting.

Safety is a paramount concern, with several warnings highlighted:

  • Electric Shock: The pump must only be connected to a GFCI-protected outlet. Do not use an extension cord with this item. If the power cord or plug is damaged, it should not be used and must be repaired by a certified electrician.
  • Flammable Materials: Do not pump flammable materials, as motor brushes may spark and cause explosions.
  • Pacemakers: Individuals with pacemakers should consult their physicians before use, as electromagnetic fields in close proximity could cause interference or failure.
  • Children: Access by children should be prevented with appropriate measures.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the pump's performance and longevity. Quarterly maintenance is recommended under optimal conditions, with more frequent checks for frequent use or dirty areas.

  • Cleaning: Sludge and debris should be cleaned from the bottom of the basin and the inlet screen.
  • Discharge Pipe: Ensure the discharge pipe is free from leaks.
  • Check Valve: Verify that the check valve (if present) is functioning properly.
  • Flow Switch: Manually operate any separate flow switch (not included) to ensure the pump turns on/off as intended.
  • Carbon Brush Maintenance: The carbon brushes may require maintenance if motor performance decreases or stops. To maintain them:
    1. Remove carbon brushes from the housing, noting their orientation for reinstallation.
    2. If a carbon brush is worn down by more than half, both carbon brushes should be replaced.
    3. Old carbon brushes can be cleaned by rubbing contact areas with a pencil eraser.
    4. Reinsert old carbon brushes in the same orientation to reduce wear.
    5. When installing, ensure carbon portions contact the motor armature, springs face away from the motor, and springs operate freely. New carbon brushes may spark initially until they wear and conform to the armature.

Before performing any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning procedures, the pump must be unplugged from its electrical outlet to prevent serious injury from accidental operation. If the pump is moved during operation, it should be flushed out with clean water after every use.

The manual also includes a detailed parts list and assembly diagram for reference, though it emphasizes that repairs and parts replacements should be undertaken by certified and licensed technicians. The manufacturer and/or distributor expressly disclaims any representation or warranty regarding the buyer's qualification to make repairs or replace parts.
