Do you have a question about the Eclipse Magnetics Ultralift E ULE0100 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Ultralift E Lifting Magnet is a permanent lifting magnet designed for safe operation and maintenance, manufactured by Eclipse Magnetics Ltd. It is tested and rated to provide a 3:1 safety factor when used according to the instructions in its manual. The device conforms to the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016. It also adheres to designated standards such as EN ISO 12100:2010, EN ISO 13854:2019, and EN 13155:2020.

Function Description:

The Ultralift E Lifting Magnet is designed to lift and transport ferrous loads. It operates by generating high magnetic forces to clamp components, enabling their safe movement. The lifter features a lever mechanism to switch between "ON" (magnetic) and "OFF" (non-magnetic) positions. When switched "ON," the lever is securely locked in place by a spring-loaded safety pin, preventing accidental release during a lift. The device is intended for use in production environments and is suitable for handling flat plates and round bars.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Ultralift E series comes in several models, each with specific dimensions, self-weight, and Working Load Limits (WLL) for both flat section and round bar applications. The WLL values are based on using thick, high magnetic permeability steel with no air gaps and include a 3:1 safety factor.

  • Model ULE0100:

    • Dimensions (mm): A: 131, B: 91, C: 65, D: 75, E: 124, F: 185, G: 45, H: 32
    • Self-Weight: 3 kg
    • WLL (Flat Section): 100 kg (thickness min. 15 mm, length max. 1000 mm)
    • WLL (Round Bar): 50 kg (diameter max. 80 mm)
  • Model ULE0300:

    • Dimensions (mm): A: 202, B: 157, C: 95, D: 95, E: 169, F: 253, G: 63, H: 46
    • Self-Weight: 10 kg
    • WLL (Flat Section): 300 kg (thickness min. 20 mm, length max. 1500 mm)
    • WLL (Round Bar): 150 kg (diameter max. 100 mm)
  • Model ULE0600:

    • Dimensions (mm): A: 283, B: 248, C: 120, D: 118, E: 220, F: 280, G: 90, H: 61
    • Self-Weight: 23 kg
    • WLL (Flat Section): 600 kg (thickness min. 30 mm, length max. 2000 mm)
    • WLL (Round Bar): 300 kg (diameter max. 140 mm)
  • Model ULE1000:

    • Dimensions (mm): A: 350, B: 308, C: 136, D: 140, E: 269, F: 310, G: 110, H: 79
    • Self-Weight: 39 kg
    • WLL (Flat Section): 1000 kg (thickness min. 40 mm, length max. 2500 mm)
    • WLL (Round Bar): 500 kg (diameter max. 180 mm)

The performance curves provided in the manual illustrate the reduction in WLL based on material thickness and air gap. Air gaps, thinner materials, and materials with lower magnetic permeability (e.g., ferrous alloy steels, high carbon steel, cast iron) will reduce the actual pull force. Reduction factors for different materials are: Ferrous alloy steels (0.8), High carbon steel (0.7), and Cast iron (0.55). For example, lifting cast iron with a ULE0300 lifter reduces the WLL from 300kg to 165kg (300kg x 0.55). Maximum hold is achieved when the lifter's poles have full contact with the component. Holes or uneven surfaces on the component can reduce performance pro-rata.

The lifter should not be operated in temperatures higher than 40°C (104°F) or lower than -10°C (14°F), in humidity higher than 80%, or in explosive (EX) or static-sensitive environments. Submerging the lifter in water is also prohibited.

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Operation: The lifter is designed for straightforward use. To switch "ON," rotate the handle 120° anti-clockwise beyond the spring-loaded safety pin. To switch "OFF," hold the handle and slide the locking pin to allow an unobstructed rotation of the handle, then rotate 120° clockwise to the "OFF" position.
  • Safety Mechanisms: A spring-loaded safety pin ensures the lever is securely locked in the "ON" position before lifting, preventing accidental disengagement.
  • Versatility: Suitable for lifting both flat plates and round bars, with specific WLLs for each application.
  • Considerations for Use:
    • Always use the entire pole area for optimal contact.
    • Fully engage the lifter in the "ON" position before lifting.
    • Consider the size of the load; for large unsupported areas, use a spreader beam and multiple lifters to prevent flexing.
    • Account for air gaps (paint, dust, scale, uneven surfaces) and material thickness, as these reduce clamping force.
    • Apply reduction factors for materials other than mild steel.
    • Ensure the full face of the poles contacts the load; holes in the component will reduce performance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Safe Operation and Maintenance Manual: This manual is an integral part of the equipment and must be retained throughout the lifter's lifetime. It contains critical information for proper use and care.
  • Periodic Inspection Schedule: Regular inspections are crucial for maintaining safety and performance.
    • Daily: Inspect pole feet for damage.
    • Weekly: Inspect lifting eye for damage and security.
    • Monthly: Inspect data labels for damage.
    • Annually: Proof test WLL.
  • Compliance: The equipment must be stored, maintained, and inspected in accordance with PUWER (1998) requirements in the EU, and applicable work standards (e.g., ASME B30.20) outside the EU.
  • Re-certification: The lifting magnet should be periodically re-certified in accordance with local legislation (e.g., PUWER, LOLER, ASME B30.20). The inspection record should be updated accordingly.
  • Replacement Parts: In case data plates become detached or damaged, contact the supplier immediately for replacements.
  • Warranty: The Ultralift E Lifting Magnet is covered by a 1-year warranty from the date of invoice.
