This document describes the Ecowitt WS90 7-in-1 Weather Outdoor Sensor, a comprehensive device designed to monitor various outdoor weather conditions. The sensor integrates multiple functionalities into a single unit, providing detailed environmental data for personal weather stations.
The Ecowitt WS90 is a sophisticated outdoor weather sensor that measures seven different environmental parameters. Its primary function is to collect accurate weather data and transmit it wirelessly to compatible Ecowitt gateways or consoles. The sensor features a piezoelectric rain gauge, which offers precise rainfall measurement. Unlike traditional tipping bucket rain gauges, the piezoelectric sensor detects the impact of raindrops, potentially offering more accurate readings, especially during light rain or drizzle.
Another key component is the ultrasonic anemometer, which measures wind speed and direction. This type of anemometer uses ultrasonic sound waves to detect wind, providing reliable data without moving parts, which can be prone to wear and tear in mechanical designs. The ultrasonic anemometer can detect wind speeds as low as 0.3 m/s, ensuring sensitivity even in calm conditions.
In addition to wind and rain, the WS90 also monitors outdoor temperature and humidity. These measurements are crucial for a complete understanding of local weather conditions. The sensor also includes capabilities for measuring solar light intensity and UV index, providing valuable information for outdoor activities and solar energy applications.
The WS90 is designed for outdoor use and features a waterproof rating of IPX5, ensuring its durability against rain and splashes. For cold and snowy climates, the sensor includes a built-in heat plate. This heater can be activated by an external 12V/1A power supply to melt accumulated snow or ice, which could otherwise interfere with wind and rain measurements, thus maintaining the accuracy of the readings in adverse weather.
The sensor operates wirelessly, transmitting data to Ecowitt gateways (GW1100, GW2000, GW1200) and consoles (HP2560, WS3800, WS3900, WS3910, HP2550, WN1820, WN1821, WN1920, WN1980). This allows users to view real-time weather data on their chosen display or through the Ecowitt app, which can upload data to the Ecowitt cloud for remote access and historical tracking. It's important to note that some consoles, like the WN1920/WN1980 and WN1820/WN1821, may not display illumination and UV data directly but will upload it to the cloud.
Setting up the WS90 involves a few straightforward steps. First, users need to install two AA batteries (not included) into the sensor's battery compartment. Upon battery insertion, an LED on the back of the sensor will light up for 3 seconds and then blink every 8.5 seconds, indicating that the sensor is transmitting data. If the light doesn't come on, pressing the "Reset" button can restart the process.
For optimal performance, especially in cold climates, Lithium batteries are recommended as they perform better in low temperatures compared to alkaline batteries. Alkaline batteries are generally suitable but should be avoided if the internal heater is frequently activated in cold and wet conditions, as trapped heat can cause them to leak. Rechargeable NiMh or NiCd batteries are also not recommended.
Before permanent installation, it is advised to test the sensor's wireless connection in a temporary location to ensure it pairs correctly with the gateway or console and transmits data reliably. This also provides an opportunity to familiarize oneself with the device's functions.
Mounting the sensor involves attaching it to a pole (not included) with a diameter of 1.0 inch. The sensor package should be rotated so that the "NORTH" arrow on top of the connector tube points due north. This alignment is critical for accurate wind direction readings. A compass, often available on smartphones, can be used for precise orientation. In the Southern Hemisphere, the solar panel's rounded design makes orientation less critical for charging. The mounting pole must be vertical to ensure accurate wind and rain measurements.
The WS90 features an extension cable for connecting an external 12V waterproof power adapter, which is used to power the heating element for de-icing. This cable can be neatly tucked inside the pole fixing thread if not in use.
The device offers calibration options for various parameters through the Ecowitt app. For instance, the rain sensor's accuracy can be calibrated by users. This involves comparing the WS90's readings with a reference rain sensor (like the WH40) and adjusting rain gain parameters in the app. There are five rain gain parameters that can be set based on different rain rates, allowing for fine-tuning of rainfall measurements.
Wind speed calibration to zero is also possible. In a windless room, covering the top and wind speed area of the WS90 with a soft cloth and holding the CAL button for 3 seconds will initiate a calibration sequence. The light will be bright for 5 seconds, then flash, and once it closes, the wind speed will be reset to zero. To stop the light flash in normal operation, the CAL button can be pressed three times.
The WS90 is primarily powered by a built-in solar panel, which charges a super capacitor. When solar light intensity is sufficient (over 20klux for more than 4 hours), the super capacitor's peak voltage should be between 3.5V and 5.5V. If the voltage is below 2.5V, users should check the top part of the WS90 for dust coverage and clean it to improve solar charging efficiency. When solar power is insufficient, the installed AA batteries provide backup power.
Proper battery management is crucial for the longevity and performance of the WS90. Users should avoid mixing different brands, types, or ages of batteries, as this can lead to over-discharge, leakage, or rupture. It is recommended to always purchase the correct size and grade of battery and replace the entire set at once. Before installation, battery contacts and device contacts should be cleaned. Batteries must be installed with correct polarity. During periods of non-use, batteries should be removed to prevent leakage and corrosion. Used batteries should be disposed of promptly and responsibly according to local recycling regulations.
The WS90 is designed with a waterproof rating of IPX5, which protects it from water splashes and rain. However, it is important to ensure proper grounding for lightning protection, as sensor damage due to lack of grounding is not covered by the warranty.
For optimal solar charging, the solar panel on the WS90 should be kept clean and free from dust or debris. Regular cleaning with a soft brush can help maintain its efficiency.
