Overview

This document describes the Emerson 1000W Microwave Oven, model MW8119SB, providing an owner's manual with essential information for safe and effective use, maintenance, and cooking.

Function Description

The Emerson 1000W Microwave Oven is designed for heating, cooking, and defrosting food using microwave energy. It converts electricity into microwave energy via a magnetron tube, which is then transmitted into the oven cavity. This energy is reflected by metal surfaces, transmitted through materials like paper, glass, and plastic, and absorbed by food, causing its molecules (especially water, fat, and sugar) to heat up. The oven features a control panel with various pads for setting cooking times, power levels, and specific functions. A display shows cooking time, power level, function indicators, and the current time.

Usage Features

The microwave oven offers a range of cooking and defrosting functionalities:

  • Clock Setting: Users can set the current time by touching the CLOCK pad and entering the time using the keypads. The clock will appear on the display unless the oven is actively cooking or defrosting.
  • Timer Function: The oven can be used as a kitchen timer, allowing users to set a desired countdown time without cooking. The timer display can be viewed by pressing the TIMER pad.
  • Power Level Selection: The POWER pad allows users to select desired cooking power levels, offering flexibility for various recipes.
  • Cooking in One Stage: This basic cooking mode allows users to set a specific cooking time and power level for a single cooking cycle.
  • Multi-Stage Cooking (2 or 3 Stage Time Cooking): For more complex recipes, the oven supports cooking in multiple stages, allowing different power levels and times to be programmed sequentially.
  • Defrost By Weight: This feature simplifies defrosting by automatically calculating the defrosting time based on the weight of the food entered. The oven beeps during the cycle to prompt users to turn or rearrange the food for even defrosting. The minimum weight is 1 oz, and the maximum is 6.0 lbs.
  • Speed Defrost: This function allows users to set a specific defrosting time for small to medium-sized foods, providing a quick thawing method.
  • Cook By Weight: Similar to defrost by weight, this feature automatically sets cooking times and power levels for roasting meats based on their weight. It is recommended for defrosted and refrigerated meats, typically between three to five pounds.
  • Quick Cook Pads: The oven includes several dedicated quick cook pads for common foods:
    • Baked Potato: Automatically sets cooking time based on the quantity of potatoes (3.5 to 8 oz). It includes a built-in standing time for even temperature distribution. Users are advised to pierce potato skins before cooking.
    • Pizza: Sets cooking time for reheating thick slices or cooking whole frozen pizzas.
    • Popcorn: Automatically sets cooking time for standard 3 to 3-1/2 oz bags of popcorn. Users can also customize the preset popcorn time for different package sizes. It is recommended to place popcorn packages on a microwaveable plate and not leave the oven unattended during popping.
    • Beverage: Sets cooking time based on the size and quantity of beverages (4 to 9 oz).
    • Frozen Dinner: Automatically sets cooking time for frozen dinners (5 to 10 oz), including a built-in standing time.
    • Reheat: Used to reheat plated foods.
  • Child Lock: This safety feature prevents unintended operation by children.
  • Stopping Operation: The oven can be stopped during operation by pressing the START/STOP pad or by opening the door. The RESET pad can be used to clear all instructions.

Maintenance Features

Proper care and maintenance are crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the microwave oven:

  • Cleaning the Oven Interior: The inside of the oven, including walls and the waveguide cover, should be cleaned regularly with a soft damp cloth. Mild detergent can be used for stubborn food spatters or spills. Harsh detergents or abrasives are not recommended. The waveguide cover should be kept clean to prevent overheating and fire.
  • Cleaning the Oven Exterior: The outside surface of the oven should be cleaned with soap and water, rinsed, and dried with a soft cloth. Care should be taken to prevent water from seeping into ventilation slots.
  • Cleaning the Control Panel: The control panel should be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth if it becomes dirty or wet. Harsh detergents or abrasives should not be used.
  • Cleaning the Glass Tray: The removable glass tray should be washed in warm, sudsy water or in a dishwasher. It is important to allow the tray to cool before cleaning if it is hot. The oven should not be operated without the glass tray in place, and no other glass tray should be used.
  • Cleaning the Turntable Roller: The turntable roller and the oven cavity floor should be cleaned regularly with mild detergent water or window cleaner to prevent excessive noise. The roller guide may be washed in mild, sudsy water or the dishwasher. The turntable roller must always be used with the glass tray for cooking.
  • Door Maintenance: The oven door, hinges, latches, and seals should be inspected regularly for any damage (bent door, broken/loosened hinges/latches, or damaged seals). Any damage should be repaired by qualified service personnel before operating the oven. The sealing surfaces should be wiped frequently with a mild detergent, rinsed, and wiped dry to prevent residue accumulation.
  • General Safety Precautions:
    • Do not attempt to operate the oven with the door open, as this can result in harmful exposure to microwave energy.
    • Do not defeat or tamper with safety interlocks.
    • Do not place any objects between the oven front face and the door.
    • Do not operate the oven if it is damaged.
    • The oven should only be adjusted or repaired by properly qualified service personnel.
    • Do not overcook food and attend the appliance carefully, especially when combustible materials are inside.
    • Remove wire twist-ties from bags before placing them in the oven.
    • If materials inside the oven ignite, keep the door closed, turn off the oven, and disconnect the power cord.
    • Do not use the cavity for storage purposes.
    • Avoid heating corrosive chemicals, as their vapors can damage safety interlock switches.
    • Never heat oil or fat for deep frying.
    • Use extreme care when heating liquids, as they can overheat without visible boiling. Stir liquids before and halfway through heating, use wide-mouthed containers, and allow standing time after heating.
    • Do not use metal containers or dishes with metallic rims, metal twist-ties, or conventional thermometers, as these can cause arcing (sparks).
    • Do not use sealed jars or narrow-neck bottles, as they may shatter.
    • Do not dry clothes, newspapers, or other materials in the oven.
    • Avoid using recycled paper products that may contain metal flecks.
    • Do not use styrofoam trays with metal strips.
    • Pierce foods with nonporous skins (e.g., potatoes, eggs) to prevent bursting.
    • Do not boil eggs in their shell.
    • Do not attempt to deep fat fry.
    • Do not leave the oven unattended while cooking.
